Tata Nexon expert review

Autocar score

We like

  • New tech-rich cabin

  • Smooth twin-clutch automatic

We don't like

  • Manual gearbox could be better

  • Fit and finish not as good as rivals

The Tata Nexon facelift looks thoroughly updated rather than merely refreshed. The front end gets an all-new nose with a higher bonnet ridge, slim DRLs linked by a faux grille and redesigned bumpers that lend a more purposeful presence. Side profiles retain the coupe-like roof, now with refreshed 16-inch alloys, while the rear gets evolved V-shaped lights and a larger spoiler, though some panel fit and finish feels unrefined. Ground clearance remains a class-leading 208 mm.

The Nexon CNGโ€™s exterior is virtually identical to its ICE siblings, keeping the SUVโ€™s bold stance. Cosmetically, the CNG gets the same updates but doesnโ€™t stand out as a separate variant.

Mechanically, the facelift continues with familiar suspension basics; it never aimed for sporty handling, instead favouring everyday stability and planted behaviour.

Inside, the faceliftโ€™s biggest leap is the all-new high-tech cabin. Twin 10.25-inch screens for the infotainment and digital cluster dominate the layered dashboard, flanked by capacitive controls that generally respond well. Despite a few ergonomic misses โ€” like the printed huge drive-mode knob and piano black surfaces that attract fingerprints โ€” the ambience is markedly more modern. Front seats are broad and supportive; rear space is generous, with good legroom and a decent 382 litre boot.

The CNG retains this interior, and despite the fuel systemโ€™s tanks, usable boot space remains good. Rear headroom is unaffected even with the panoramic sunroof. Top CNG variants match the ICE in tech and comfort kit.

For the facelifted Nexon, Tata offers a 1.2-litre turbo petrol with a new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and a 1.5-litre diesel. The petrol is refined for city use, though initial acceleration can feel modest, and performance isnโ€™t its strongest suit. The diesel offers better mid-range torque and effortless progress when kept between 2,000-4,000 rpm.

The Nexon CNG uses the same 1.2-litre turbo engine detuned to 100 hp and 170 Nm. It feels lively off idle and response is eager for day-to-day driving, though engine noise and vibration are more noticeable, especially on hard acceleration. CNG mode isnโ€™t breathless and remains usable, with seamless petrol/CNG switching.

Fuel economy for the facelift petrol and diesel remains competitive but not class-leading; diesel shines on highways while petrol carries adequate efficiency in mixed use.

The CNG impresses on paper with up to ARAI-claimed ~24 km/kg, and real-world tests hint at strong efficiency, making it appealing for high-mileage users.

Despite suspension carryovers, the facelift Nexon continues to deliver a composed ride. Its suspension soaks rough urban roads well, and the light steering helps city driving. At speed, body control is confident, though the SUV leans towards comfort rather than engaging dynamics.

The CNG behaves similarly, with ride and handling traits matching the updated architecture thanks to identical underpinnings.

Feature content is a highlight. Twin high-res screens, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, a 360ยฐ camera, JBL sound, voice assistant, connected car tech and multiple USB ports enhance value. Standard safety includes six airbags and ESP across the range.

In the CNG, safety is bolstered by CNG-specific safeguards โ€” fire extinguisher, cutoff systems and leak detection โ€” alongside top-tier camera and sensor pack.

The facelift Nexon continues to offer a strong mix of tech, comfort and everyday usability at competitive prices, reinforcing its status as a segment favourite. Its breadth of features and safety kit justify its positioning.

The Nexon CNG adds significant value for cost-conscious buyers, especially those prioritising running cost savings without cutting back on kit. While refinement isnโ€™t as high as petrol or diesel, the efficiency gains and seamless fuel switching make the CNG a compelling alternative.

Trending Questions on Tata Nexon - Answered by Autocar Experts

D
Asked by: Deepeshon Mar 15, 2026

I am a first-time car buyer and also a new driver. I am planning to buy a car for long-term ownership with a budget of around โ‚น11โ€“12 lakh (on-road). My family has five members, and the car will be used mostly for city driving in Hyderabad, with occasional highway trips maybe once a month. I prefer an automatic transmission since it will be easier to drive in city traffic. Currently, I am considering the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro Petrol AMT and the Tata Nexon Pure Plus S AMT Petrol. I am looking for a car that offers good safety, reliability, comfort for family use, and reasonable maintenance for long-term ownership. Between these two options, which one would you recommend? Also, are there any other better options in this price range that I should consider?

First, a small correction. The Mahindra XUV 3XO does not use an AMT gearbox. It comes with a proper torque converter automatic, which offers a much smoother and more refined driving experience compared to AMTs. This makes it easier to drive in city traffic and overall more comfortable for daily use.

Because of this, the XUV 3XO MX2 Pro automatic becomes the better choice between the two cars you shortlisted. The wider cabin also makes it more comfortable for a family of five and the ride quality is well suited for both city drives and occasional highway trips.

The Tata Nexon does offer a DCA/DCT automatic option with the turbo-petrol engine, but that variant is significantly more expensive and would go well beyond your โ‚น11โ€“12 lakh budget. The Nexon AMT variants therefore do not match the smoothness of the torque converter automatic offered in the 3XO.

For your requirements of ease of driving, comfort and a better automatic gearbox, the Mahindra XUV 3XO automatic would be the better option over the Nexon in your budget.

Asked by: Rachna Hanson Mar 13, 2026

I have been driving a Hyundai Santro (AMT) for the last six years, and now I am planning to upgrade with a budget of โ‚น12-13 lakh. My current car has done only 15,000 km in six years, so my usage is relatively low. In my next car, I am looking for features like a reverse camera, Android Auto, and voice commands to make driving easier. I am interested in the Kia Seltos, Kia Sonet, and Tata Nexon, but I am open to other suggestions as well. Which car would you recommend?

The Hyundai Venue will feel like a big upgrade from your Hyundai Santro AMT. The turbo petrol engine paired with the DCT gearbox offers strong performance and smooth shifts, which makes driving in the city effortless. It also gets features like a reverse camera, Android Auto connectivity and voice commands that you are specifically looking for. Overall, it will be a noticeable step up in terms of power, features, space and overall comfort.

Among the other cars you mentioned, the Kia Sonet is also a good option. However, the Venue is the newer car and is more spacious. Also, a replacement for the Sonet is expected next year, which means it may feel dated sooner.

The Tata Nexon petrol is another option that offers good space and a comfortable ride, but the Venue feels more refined and easier to drive and is the newer car as well.

As for the Kia Seltos, it is a good SUV, but it belongs to a higher segment and will stretch well beyond your โ‚น12-13 lakh budget in comparable variants.

Asked by: Yogesh Gautam Kambleon Mar 13, 2026

I need a car for my daily commute, and my travel will be around 50-60 km every day. Most of my driving will be within the city, along with occasional highway drives on weekends. My budget should allow for an EMI of less than โ‚น20,000 per month. Considering my usage, should I go for a diesel or a CNG car, and which option would you recommend?

With your daily running of around 50-60 km, your monthly usage will easily cross 1,500 km, so choosing a fuel with low running costs makes sense. In this case, CNG is generally a better fit than diesel, especially since most of your driving is in the city.

One of the better options to consider is the Tata Nexon CNG. Unlike most CNG cars, the Nexon uses a turbo-petrol engine, which means it still feels reasonably strong and comfortable even on the highway. The turbo engine produces good torque, which helps maintain performance despite running on CNG. This makes the Nexon CNG a good balance between low running costs for the city and decent highway performance for weekend drives.

Another practical option is the Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG, particularly the LXi or VXi variants. The Brezza uses a 1.5-litre engine with factory-fitted CNG. It is known for being smooth and reliable while still offering good mileage and reasonable performance.

I am looking to buy a car which has an SUV touch, feels tough and is easy to drive in narrow or tier-II cities. Travelling is around 500-700km per month maximum, mostly within city driving. Budget around โ‚น12 to โ‚น13.5 lakh. It can be low on features as I am elderly, but needs a good feel, touch and driving comfort.

The Tata Nexon would be an ideal choice considering your requirements. It has a sense of toughness, especially over bad roads, is compact enough for narrow streets and comes with a modern cabin with the necessary creature comforts.
This Tata car also offers a soft and comfy seat set at an ideal height, making it easy to get in and out of. Since your driving is fairly low, a petrol version would be the ideal choice. The Creative +S variant will fit in your budget and get you a good set of features too. If you want an automatic, there is also an AMT option that won't be as feature-loaded but will give you the convenience of an auto.

I am confused between the Punch CNG automatic and the Nexon CNG. Since the Punch is available with an automatic and almost all the same features as the Nexon, should I go for the automatic comfort with the Punch, or will the Nexon still be a better choice?

Go for the Tata Punch CNG AMT. Not only will you benefit from the low running costs of a CNG, but you also have the convenience of clutch pedal-free driving. Additionally, the Punch's NA engine will be more efficient than the Nexon's turbo unit.
Although performance won't be as strong as the Tata Nexon, as a point A-to-B city commuter, the Punch CNG AMT is hard to beat. So, unless you need the extra space or performance, pick the Punch CNG AMT.

Hi, currently I have been driving a Honda Amaze diesel top model since 2019. Now I want to upgrade my car to an SUV. My daily running is 45 km and monthly up to 1300 km, with 20% in the city and 80% on the highway. Please suggest a fuel-efficient and safety-loaded SUV under an โ‚น11-12 lakh budget. Please suggest.

Since you prefer diesels, the Tata Nexon would be a good choice for your needs. It gets a frugal 1.5-litre diesel engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox. It is rated 5 stars for crash test safety in BNCAP and has a confident ride on the highway. The braking performance is good too, and in your budget, you can get the Pure + S variant that gets you a decent kit like LED headlamps, sunroof, reversing camera, rain-sensing wipers, etc.
The Nexon returns an impressive 16.5kpl in the city and an even more impressive 19.4kpl on the highway. It is a well-rounded SUV for your needs and hence our top recommendation.

I am planning to buy a compact SUV with a diesel automatic gearbox, and my budget is around โ‚น12โ€“14 lakh on-road. I generally prefer choosing the variant just above the base model, as it usually offers the best value for money rather than going for the top-spec variant. My shortlisted options are the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet. While value for money is my main priority, my child is insisting that the car should also have a sunroof. Considering these requirements, which car would you recommend buying?

While the Tata Nexon has its strengths in a tough build and good suspension, its AMT gearbox is no match for the torque converter automatic. It comes paired with the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet's 1.5-litre diesel engine. The Hyundai and Kia's smooth diesel engines and slick auto gearboxes deliver a very polished driving experience, which you will love.

Of the two, the Hyundai Venue is newer, offers more rear seat space and a few more frills like a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen. You'd get a Venue diesel-auto HX5 in your budget, which is reasonably well equipped and also packs in a sunroof. We can't recommend it wholeheartedly, though, because it misses the safety of a rear wiper.

If rear seat space isn't a deal breaker and you are comfortable with the idea of buying a car that will be replaced in the near future, the Sonet diesel-auto HTX is definitely worth a look.

For not much money over the Venue HX5, it packs in a whole lot more equipment such as LED headlights, push button start, leatherette seats and front seat ventilation. Also, it has the safety of a rear wiper, rear disc brakes and front parking sensors.

Hi, I currently drive a 2015 Honda Jazz diesel with 200,000km on the odometer . I have got the best in everything from the same. Most of my travel is in Pune city, where I clock around 100 km per day, and once a month, I travel 1000 km outstation. So in total, around 3000 km approximately in a month. My budget is โ‚น15 to โ‚น18 lakh, but I need a better 5-seater SUV and expect a strong balance of mileage, power and style. Kindly suggest, as I am a big fan of diesel cars.

The Kia Syros HTX+ 1.5 diesel-AT is an excellent, versatile compact SUV that's spacious and feature-rich. It offers exceptional cabin space and gives you the flexibility to expand boot space to carry more cargo, should you need. The diesel-automatic combination is smooth, refined and efficient too. Yes, its styling might not be to everyone's taste, but if you like the way it looks, this is the one to go for.
Other diesel-automatic options in that price bracket that you could consider are the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet, both of which share their diesel-automatic powertrain.
The Mahindra XUV 3XO is also a good, spacious option, and while its engine is very powerful, its AMT gearbox isn't as smooth as the torque converters that rivals offer. Even the Tata Nexon gets a diesel-AMT option, although it isn't as refined as the others.

Iโ€™m planning to replace my current car and would appreciate some expert advice. I currently drive a Maruti Suzuki Ritz, and in the past 10 years I have driven only about 65,000 km, so my usage is quite low. I mostly use the car occasionally on weekends and for highway trips, not for daily commuting. My main reasons for upgrading are better safety and more comfort. I live in Bengaluru, so city traffic and parking are also factors to consider. I am currently confused between two options: Tata Nexon top-end variant with DCA (automatic so wife can use) Tata Sierra mid variant (likely Pure Plus) manual due to budget constraints.

After the EV, the turbo-petrol-DCA is the second-best iteration in the Nexon range. The drive experience is smooth and gearbox is seamless, although it is not the most refined in the segment. Of course, being a sub-4-metre car, manoeuvring it in town or parking in tight spots will be easier than a Sierra, and like you've mentioned, opting for an automatic comes with added convenience. Tata has done well to update the Nexon's interiors with modern features and tech, so even though it is an old platform, it is still up-to-speed with times. If you like the Nexon DCA, go for it - it'll be a good upgrade from your outgoing Maruti Ritz.

I want to buy a new car. My driving usage is around 60% highway and 40% city. Since fuel efficiency is important to me, I am considering a CNG car and have currently shortlisted the Tata Nexon CNG Creative + PS variant. However, I am also thinking that in a similar price range, I could buy a bigger SUV like the Hyundai Creta in a lower variant and install a CNG kit from the aftermarket. Another option I am considering is buying the new Hyundai Venue Automatic and installing an aftermarket CNG kit, so I can keep the features and also enjoy the convenience of an automatic along with CNG mileage. A sunroof is one of my requirements, which is why I am not considering the Maruti Grand Vitara. I am quite confused between choosing a factory-fitted CNG option like the Nexon or buying a bigger petrol SUV and installing a CNG kit aftermarket. Please help me choose the right car.

While you can do an aftermarket fitment of a CNG tank and system to a lot of cars, you are better off getting a factory-fitted system in the long run. Being designed, calibrated and tested in-house by the manufacturer means it will deliver optimal performance and efficiency and will be easier to maintain under warranty. The Tata Nexon iCNG is an excellent option for a number of different reasons. For one, its under-floor dual CNG tank design means you get a usable boot. It will not be the case in any aftermarket option, where the CNG tank will take up most of your boot space.

The Nexon also has a powerful 1.2-litre turbocharged engine, which means it still has decent performance, even when running on CNG, which will be helpful for your highway-focused usage, while still delivering good mileage. And finally, Tata Motors offers a wide variety of trim levels even for its CNG offerings, and the Creative+ PS variant is pretty well kitted out.
