I want to buy a 7-seater SUV EV. I can make the purchase anytime within the next six months. My priority is a real-world driving range of over 600 km. Which model would you recommend?
Unfortunately, there are very few EVs that will give you a real-world range of 600km - even though their official rating says so - and fewer still with a 7-seat layout. The only one that fits the bill is the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, whose price is around Rs 1.5 crore. If that fits your budget, then go for it, as it is one of the best luxury EVs you can buy in India today. The other three-row EVs lower down are the Tesla Model Y L (6 seater) and the Mahindra XEV 9S (6/7 seater). Both have official ratings of over 650km, but the real-world range is likely to be more in the region of 500km. In our real-world range test, the XEV 9S with the largest (79kWh) battery pack returned 477km overall, and while we haven't range tested the Model Y L, previous Tesla models have proven quite efficient. If your budget can accommodate the Tesla at around Rs 65 lakh, you should get it. If not, the Mahindra at around Rs 22-32 lakh should be adequate.

We are a family of four with mostly city driving and take outstation trips twice a month of about 350-400 km. Which would be the best option in terms of value for money? I also like sporty looks. We plan to set up home charging. I currently drive a Skoda Superb and am looking to replace it.
Go for the BYD Sealion 7. For a family of four stepping out of a Superb, it’s the comfier daily - softer ride, quieter cabin and a roomier rear bench than the Model Y, so city runs and school-office duty feel easy. Your 350-400 km trips should not be an issue with the big battery and fast-charging capabilities. It also gives similar range and kit for less money, so it’s the stronger value. The design is sleek enough and performance is properly quick for India, and though both are limited, BYD has the edge on dealer network and reach at the moment.The Model Y is more playful to drive and its software and driver aids are slicker. It is the more tech forward choice, and if that's what you're after, it might be worth considering. The Model Y L definitely has the edge on space, although its real-world range and comfort is yet to be proven. It is a much larger vehicle, however, so driving in the city could be cumbersome compared to the others. The Y L is also quite a bit more expensive than the Sealion 7. Test drive both and see if you have a preference, as both the Tesla and BYD are good options, but we would pick the Sealion 7 for your requirement.

Of your shortlisted options, the Tesla Model Y L seems like the best bet. The Mercedes CLA will require some care over speed breakers, especially on your long drives to your hometown, but the Tesla Model Y L is not as bad. Its wheelbase is long, but it has sufficient ground clearance and can clear most bumps. It also has the most practical cabin of the three, with a third row in case you have more passengers that can be folded away to reveal immense luggage space. It's also packed with tech that will keep the kids occupied, and once you get used to the lack of buttons, it makes for a great overall driving experience. The iX1's range is very good and should serve your needs just fine, but yes, it's not as good as the other two. Another car you should consider is the BYD Sealion 7, which is a great mix of style, functionality, range and luxury. However, overall, we feel the Tesla Model Y L suits you best.
Can you suggest an upcoming EV with sufficient ground clearance to comfortably clear Indian speed breakers, while also having a low enough seat height and easy ingress so that I can transfer from my wheelchair to the front passenger seat with minimal effort? We currently own a Mercedes-Benz E200 (2025 model). My wife's daily commute is generally only around 5 km. However, we would prefer a larger battery pack in case we decide to take longer trips, such as to Goa. The car should also offer a boot capacity of at least 575 litres, enough to accommodate my folded wheelchair along with additional luggage. We previously owned a Skoda Superb, which was excellent in terms of both ground clearance and boot space. Our budget is around Rs. 1 crore.
Try out the Tesla Model Y L. It is a three-row SUV with a fairly large 420-litre boot with all seats up, which expands to a massive 1,076 litres with the third row folded. There is also a sizeable frunk for extra storage.The claimed range is 681km, so in the real world, a Mumbai-to-Goa trip is doable with one or two top-up stops. Ground clearance is about 169mm, which is on par with your Superb. It is tall, yet the seat isn’t as high as some SUVs, so sliding across from a wheelchair should be easier. It won't be as easy as your sedans, so make sure you try getting in and out at least a couple of times.It also fits comfortably within your budget and comes very well equipped. It's worth noting that a lot of functions are baked into the large central touchscreen, and that might take some getting used to.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC EV will only be launched in India in 2027, and its ICE counterpart is expected to follow after that - perhaps in late 2027. The ICE version is expected to resemble the new GLC EV on the outside and inside, featuring new details like the illuminated grille, 3-pointed star DRLs in the headlamps and tail-lamps, and the 39-inch Hyperscreen display on the dashboard. However, while the GLC EV is newly developed on a pure-electric skateboard platform, the ICE version is expected to be a heavy facelift of the current model, built on the same platform and using the same petrol and diesel engines. With all the updates, however, expect the price to go up, and while we can't say for sure as it's a long way off, it could go up to about Rs 95 lakh, on road, in some cities. If that is too much of a jump, and too much of a wait, the current GLC remains an excellent choice, with strong engines, great comfort and a well-appointed cabin. And if you're interested in an EV but don't want to wait until the GLC EV is launched, consider the BYD Sealion 7 or Tesla Model Y L.

If you're already leaning towards the Tesla Model Y L, you should go for it, as, for the money, it's one of the best EVs out there. At this time, we're yet to review the L, but the improvements it promises over the standard-wheelbase models are impressive. For one, there's the additional space, captain's chairs for the second row and a usable third row, which already elevates it above most others at this price point. The already long list of features gets an upgrade with heating and ventilation in the second row, faster wireless chargers and an upgraded sound system. They've even added adaptive dampers, which should address a big criticism of the standard models - a harsh ride quality. The biggest gains, however, appear to have been to performance and range, thanks to a dual-motor setup with around 500hp, and with a 681km WLTP range, expect upwards of 500km on a full charge in the real world, as Teslas are known to be quite efficient. Downsides you should be aware of - the wheelbase is 150mm longer, but ground clearance has only gone up by 2mm (now 169mm), so be careful over speed breakers. And shortcomings of old remain, like very few buttons on the interior, and a quality that doesn't feel good enough at this price range. However, we're sure you're familiar with the vehicle already, as you're already inclined towards it. Another alternative that's very appealing is the new Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric, which has an even longer range and tech that's arguably on par with Tesla. However, it is nowhere near as spacious as the Model Y L.

While both your shortlisted EVs are excellent in their own right, they do have their shortcomings. The Tesla Model Y L is priced at Rs 62 lakh (ex-showroom), putting it outside your budget, and though it has an impressive WLTP range, it has yet to be proven in the real world. Similarly, though the BYD Sealion 7 represents excellent value for money, its real-world range is far removed from its official figure, and in our real-world test, the dual-motor version managed around 370km on a full charge. Of the two, we'd recommend the Sealion 7, which offers better value overall than the Tesla. However, another EV you should consider in your price range is the recently unveiled Hyundai Ioniq 5 facelift. The original model came the closest to delivering a real-world 500km range in our tests, and this new one, with its larger 84kWh battery, should easily cross that figure. Hyundai's EV powertrains are among the most efficient around, and the Ioniq 5 is as well-appointed and equipped, spacious and comfortable as the best out there.
Hi, I'm planning to buy my first luxury car, preferably an SUV. We are a family of 4 adults and 1 child. My daily run is approx 30 kms, mainly within the city and then occasionally, once a month, a highway run. Total monthly running is around 1000 kms. My budget is between 50-60 lacs. I'm currently confused between BMW iX1 LWB, BYD sealion, Toyota Fortuner and newly launched Tesla model Y L (least likely due to concerns of resale value of Tesla 5 years down the line and uncertainty regarding import duties). I can also consider waiting for the upcoming BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC EV. The BMW iX1 LWB is the strongest value-for-money package here, priced at Rs. 53-54 lakh. It gives you a solid luxury badge, a spacious and practical cabin, good tech and features, and an enjoyable driving experience at a very competitive price for what it offers.The BYD Sealion 7 also delivers a very premium experience and, if anything, feels a touch more luxurious inside than the iX1, with strong performance and range. However, it still cannot match BMW for badge pull, dealer reach and long-term service ecosystem, which matters for a first luxury purchase.We actually quite like the Tesla Model Y L: it’s very aggressively priced for a three-row imported EV, gives you all-wheel drive, excellent range and that useful third row where your child can sit comfortably and safely. Your concern about resale is valid, but most EVs take a bigger depreciation hit anyway, and because the Model Y L is priced keenly for a CBU, the percentage drop in value may not be disproportionately worse than rivals if demand holds up. Also, there is unlikely to be any import duty reduction that may impact the resale value in the near future since the Model Y is made in China. The upcoming BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC EV will likely feel the most premium and high-tech of all, with plenty of wow factor, especially in their cabins and brand perception. They will definitely be more expensive and, realistically, you’re looking at at least another 6-10 months before they’re easily available, so you have to weigh that wait and budget stretch against how soon you want to start enjoying the car.

There are currently no electric options available at the Rs 1 crore on-road price point. In fact, there's a wide gap between Rs 70 lakh and Rs 1.2 crore. However, the gap will be filled over the next 18-20 months with new models such as the Audi Q6 E-tron, Mercedes GLC EV and BMW iX3. At present, the BMW iX1 LWB and Tesla Model Y are the best electric cars under Rs 70 lakh. The iX1 stands out in space and is actually a great value. The Tesla car, on the other hand, makes an impression by being very different from other EVs in terms of design, interior, and technology.Around the Rs 1.2 crore mark, the BMW iX is the best EV out there. A facelift is due in a few months, so you could push for big discounts on the outgoing model.
