Tesla cars in India (2)
Tesla is one of the world’s most valuable companies in terms of market capitalization and one of the most recognisable names in electric cars. Founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, the company later came to be closely associated with Elon Musk, who became CEO in 2008. Tesla helped bring electric cars into the mainstream and has also built businesses around battery storage, charging and software.
Tesla entered India in 2025 with the Model Y as a completely built unit. The company has since expanded its retail and charging presence, revised the Model Y range and added the longer Model Y L. Its current line-up comprises the Model Y Premium RWD and Model Y L Premium AWD, with prices ranging from Rs 50.89 lakh to Rs 61.99 lakh, ex-showroom.
Tesla cars available in India
The Model Y is currently available in two versions, with the main differences being seating capacity, drivetrain, range and size.
| Parameter | Model Y Premium RWD | Model Y L Premium AWD |
|---|---|---|
| Seating | 5 | 6 |
| Drive | Rear-wheel drive | All-wheel drive |
| Claimed range | 500km WLTP | 681km WLTP |
| 0-100kph | 5.9sec | 5.0sec |
| Length | 4,797mm | 4,976mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,890mm | 3,040mm |
| Ground clearance | 167mm | 169mm |
| DC charging | Up to 175kW | Up to 250kW |
The standard Model Y is the simpler choice for five-seat use, with a lower entry price and rear-wheel drive. The Model Y L costs more but adds a third row, a longer wheelbase, greater claimed range and all-wheel drive. The difference is therefore not just a matter of equipment levels, but also of size, seating and drivetrain.
How Technology Shapes the Tesla Model Y Experience
Tesla puts software and connectivity at the centre of the driving experience. In India, this is most evident in the Model Y's minimalist cabin, touchscreen-based controls and integration with the Tesla app and Supercharger network.
| Tesla feature | What it offers |
|---|---|
| 16-inch central touchscreen | Controls navigation, media, climate settings and several vehicle functions from one screen. |
| 8-inch rear screen | Gives rear passengers a dedicated display for entertainment and other functions. |
| Over-the-air updates | Software and some vehicle functions can be updated remotely without a workshop visit. |
| Tesla app | Allows remote access to vehicle functions and charging information. |
| Integrated charging | The navigation system can factor Tesla Superchargers into longer journeys and help plan charging stops. |
| Driver assistance | Includes features such as lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance and blind-spot monitoring. |
| Minimalist cabin | There are fewer conventional buttons, with many functions moved to the touchscreen. |
| Low-mounted battery | Keeps the centre of gravity low and contributes to the Model Y's driving character. |
These features shape much of the Tesla experience, but the ownership story goes beyond what is built into the car.
Tesla ownership in India: Things to consider
Tesla's technology is only one part of the ownership experience. Its relatively new and limited presence in India also brings some practical considerations.
- Ground clearance: The standard Model Y has 167mm of ground clearance. This is adequate for most roads but leaves less margin over large speed breakers, especially when fully loaded.
- Service reach: Tesla has service centres in Mumbai and Gurugram, while its retail presence extends to Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Its service network remains smaller than that of established carmakers with decades of operations in India.
- Charging: Tesla's Supercharger network is expanding, but coverage is still limited compared with the wider charging infrastructure available from established EV brands. Long-distance travel therefore needs more planning.
- Imported pricing: The Model Y is sold as an imported car, which contributes to its higher price compared with locally manufactured electric SUVs.
- Touchscreen controls: The cabin uses fewer physical controls than most cars. This keeps the dashboard uncluttered, but some frequently used functions require interaction with the central screen.
These considerations become more relevant when the Model Y is viewed alongside its similarly priced electric SUV rivals. While Tesla has a distinct software and charging ecosystem, other manufacturers bring their own strengths, particularly in terms of established networks and more familiar cabin layouts.
Tesla cars vs rivals in India
Tesla's pricing places the Model Y alongside premium electric SUVs such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, BMW iX1, Mercedes-Benz EQA and BYD Sealion 7.
The Model Y differs from these cars mainly in how its software, vehicle functions and charging experience are integrated. Most rivals use more conventional cabin layouts and, in several cases, have a longer-established sales and service network in India.
The comparison therefore goes beyond range and equipment. The Model Y offers a more software-focused experience, while its rivals generally follow a more familiar approach to controls, service and ownership.
The Model Y gives Tesla a foothold in India's premium EV market, but a two-version line-up leaves considerable room for expansion. The next step will depend on which additional models the company brings to India and how quickly it builds out its wider operations.
Upcoming Tesla cars in India
Tesla's India line-up remains limited to the Model Y, although more models are being considered for the market. The Model 3 is the most notable model linked to a possible India launch, but Tesla has not announced its Indian price or confirmed a launch date.
For now, Tesla's cars are imported as completely built units, with sales and service operations concentrated in a handful of cities. Expanding the model range along with charging and service coverage will be important if the brand is to move beyond its current position in India's premium EV market.

Fantastic car at this price! Quick acceleration and comfort, plus the automatic driving experience. I'm not sure how it will handle Indian roads, though.
