Next-gen Tata Nexon launch details

Tata Motors has begun work on the next-gen Nexon compact SUV, internally codenamed 'Garud', which is expected to hit showrooms in 2027. The next-gen will be based on a heavily modified version of the existing X1 platform.

Next-gen Tata Nexon: what to expect?

The Nexon was first launched in September 2017, and has been updated with two comprehensive facelifts – the first came in 2020, followed by the second one in 2023. So, a 2027 timeline for the second-generation SUV means the first-gen model will have served for 10 years, which is pretty long in automotive lifecycles.

Incidentally, the next-generation Nexon will carry over the current X1 platform, which traces its roots back to the Indica from the late 1990s. This platform has been majorly overhauled over the years (including with the 2023 Nexon facelift) and the forthcoming generational update is also expected to bring massive structural updates. Aesthetically, too, expect a majorly overhauled exterior and interior design in line with newer Tata models, although specific details are currently quite scarce.

Next-gen Tata Nexon: powertrain options

The next-generation Nexon is expected to continue with its current petrol and CNG powertrains, but it remains to be seen if the diesel engine continues given its declining share in the compact class. The Nexon’s 1.5-litre mill was the only diesel engine to meet the BS6.2 emissions norms without the use of an expensive SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, but an upgrade to meet the upcoming BS7 emissions regulations will be more costly.

An update, in line with the combustion variants of the Nexon, can be expected for the Nexon EV, but it remains to be seen if Tata Motors introduces them simultaneously or separately. Upon launch, it will continue to rival the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and the new Skoda Kylaq in the compact SUV segment.
