Tata Aeris is a compact sedan that replaces the Tigor and rivals the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Aura. It is sold in 18 variants across five trims: Smart, Pure, Pure+, Creative and Accomplished. It is equipped with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol that makes 86hp and 113Nm, and you get the option to either pair it with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT.  Each Aeris trim is also offered with a factory-fitted CNG.

As per us at Autocar India, the Aeris is a much more appealing car than the Tigor it replaces. It looks modern, the cabin is packed with features and the ride is comfortable. The engine gets noisy when you rev it, but the Aeris undercuts its rivals on price, which makes it a compelling choice.

Aeris Key Features

Here are the Aeris key features that you get across the range:

Category

Key Features

Engine and gearbox

  • Every trim gets the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol, which makes 86hp and 113Nm
  • The Smart comes only with a 5-speed manual, while every other trim also offers a 5-speed AMT
  • The CNG version makes 76hp and 97Nm. From the Pure onwards, you can have it with a manual or an AMT

Screens and audio

  • The base Smart gets a semi-digital driver's display but no touchscreen or speakers
  • The Pure adds Bluetooth through the driver's display. This trim also comes equipped two speakers and steering-mounted controls
  • The Pure+ moves up to an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and four speakers
  • The Creative gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen and connected car tech, and the Accomplished adds two tweeters

Safety

  • Every variant gets six airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX mounts, rear parking sensors and three-point seatbelts for all
  • The Pure+ adds stability control with traction control, hill-hold, tyre pressure monitoring and a rear camera
  • The Creative gets a 360-degree camera with a blind-spot view, and the Accomplished lets these cameras record like a dashcam

Comfort and convenience

  • The Smart gets manual AC, tilt steering and fabric seats
  • The Pure adds all four power windows, central locking, a height-adjustable driver's seat and a rear defogger
  • The Pure+ brings rear AC vents, a 65W Type-C charger, front and rear armrests, and cruise control on the manual versions
  • The Creative adds automatic climate control, auto LED headlamps, rain-sensing wipers and a cooled glovebox
  • The Accomplished adds ventilated front seats, leatherette upholstery, a wireless charger and a 65W charger at the rear

Practicality

  • The petrol version has a 419-litre boot, and struts in place of hinges free up more usable space
  • The CNG version uses twin cylinders under the boot floor, so there is still room for a couple of backpacks and a small bag
  • The rear seat offers good legroom and kneeroom, though as per us at Autocar India, the headroom may be tight for passengers over six feet
  • You also get a spare wheel, mounted under the car

Aeris Road Test Findings

What we liked

  • The ride quality is excellent. It handles broken roads well, while the 170mm ground clearance clears large speed breakers without a problem.
  • The Aeris gets plenty of features. The 10.25-inch touchscreen works well, while the ventilated front seats were useful in near 40°C heat.
  • The 419-litre boot is bigger than what you get in the Amaze, Dzire and Aura. There is also enough usable space in the CNG version.
  • The manual gearbox has short throws and a light clutch, so it does not feel tiring in traffic.

What we did not like

  • The three-cylinder engine sounds coarse above 2,500rpm. Wind and road noise also become more noticeable at higher speeds.
  • The CNG-AMT is slow to respond and can feel jerky when pulling away. Overtaking therefore needs some planning.
  • Rear headroom is limited for taller passengers and just like us some may also find the beige cabin difficult to keep clean.

Who Should Buy The Aeris?

Who it suits

Why?

Buyers who want the most features for the money

The Creative trim gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 360-degree camera and automatic climate control, and it undercuts rivals on price.

CNG buyers who need boot space

The twin-cylinder CNG setup leaves usable boot space, which rivals with a single large tank do not. CNG is offered on every trim, so you do not have to give up features.

Buyers who drive on bad roads

The suspension soaks up broken surfaces well, and 170mm of ground clearance takes care of large speed breakers.

Small families who travel with luggage

The 419-litre petrol boot is the biggest in its class, and the rear seat has good legroom and kneeroom.

City commuters who want an automatic

The AMT is offered on every trim except the Smart, and its creep function helps in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Tata Aeris price & variants

Tata Aeris price in India starts at Rs 5.30 lakh for the Smart Petrol MT and goes up to Rs 9.75 lakh for the Accomplished CNG AMT (ex-showroom). Meanwhile, the on road price in major Indian cities ranges from Rs 5.76 lakh to Rs 11.19 lakh. You can choose from 18 variants, with petrol or CNG power and a manual or AMT gearbox. EMIs for the Smart Petrol MT start at Rs 8,366 a month.

Which Aeris variant should you buy?

  • As per us, the Creative trim offers the best balance of price and features. It gets the 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 360-degree camera, automatic climate control and LED headlamps, and the petrol versions get 15-inch alloys.
  • If you are on a tight budget, go for the Pure+ trim. It gets an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a rear camera, stability control and rear AC vents.
  • The Accomplished trim adds ventilated front seats, leatherette upholstery, a wireless charger and dashcam recording. So, if you want these features, pick this trim. As per us, though these features are nice to have, we think they are worth the extra money over the Creative trim.
  • The Smart gets only the basic safety features. Plus, neither the Smart nor the Pure gets a touchscreen or rear camera.

Note: CNG is offered on every trim. The AMT is offered from the Pure onwards, with both petrol and CNG.

Exterior Design And Engineering

8.0

The Aeris looks sleeker and more modern than the Tigor, although its styling remains familiar. It gets slim LED headlamps with integrated DRLs, a new bumper, LED fog lamps and a clamshell bonnet. The 14-inch stylised steel wheels look slightly undersized, while recycled-material wheel-arch cladding adds some visual contrast. At the rear, segmented LED tail-lights, new Aeris lettering and a clean bumper complete the design. Ground clearance is adequate for broken roads and large speed breakers.

Interior Space And Comfort

8.0

The cabin shares its basic layout with the Tiago and gets a lighter beige theme. The redesigned centre console adds storage, cupholders, wireless charging and a leatherette-wrapped armrest. The seats get revised cushions and bolsters and are comfortable, while rear-seat legroom and kneeroom are good. Headroom can be tight for passengers over six feet tall.

The dual-cylinder CNG setup leaves enough boot space for a couple of backpacks and a small luggage bag. A 13-inch underbody spare wheel is also provided.

Features And Safety

9.0

The Aeris gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen, 360-degree camera and a new DVR function that lets the surround-view cameras record as a dashcam. The top-spec Accomplished trim also gets ventilated front seats, which worked effectively in hot conditions. Other features include cruise control, wireless smartphone connectivity and a retro-themed instrument cluster.

Safety equipment includes six airbags, ISOFIX mounts, rear parking sensors and three-point seatbelts with reminders. Higher variants add TPMS, ESP with traction control, rain-sensing wipers and a 360-degree camera. The Tigor had received a four-star Global NCAP rating, while the Aeris is yet to be tested by Bharat NCAP.

Performance And Refinement

6.0

The Aeris iCNG uses the 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, producing 76hp and 97Nm, paired with a five-speed manual or AMT. The CNG-AMT has enough performance for city traffic but is slow to respond, with noticeable pauses after pressing the accelerator and jerky starts from standstill.

It settles into a relaxed rhythm once up to speed, but overtaking on the highway requires planning. Refinement is also a weak point, with engine noise and vibrations becoming pronounced above 2,500rpm. Wind and road noise are noticeable at higher speeds.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

The Aeris iCNG has not yet been tested in standardised real-world conditions. Tata is yet to reveal an official efficiency figure, but real-world mileage is expected to be around 25-30km/kg

Ride Comfort And Handling

8.0

The Aeris performs particularly well over poor roads, with its suspension absorbing broken surfaces and larger bumps without unsettling the car. Its ground clearance also makes it well suited to rough roads and large speed breakers.

At highway speeds, it remains planted without feeling floaty or nervous. The steering offers decent feedback, although some vagueness around the centre takes away a little confidence.

Value For Money

8.0

Priced from Rs 5.70 lakh to Rs 9.10 lakh (ex-showroom), the Aeris offers a more convincing package than the Tigor ever was, combining modern styling, good equipment, comfortable ride quality and useful boot space despite the CNG setup. Higher-spec variants being available with CNG also means buyers don't have to sacrifice features for lower running costs.

The CNG-AMT is the main weakness, with its slow responses, jerky starts and noisy engine making it better suited to relaxed city driving. Even so, the Aeris is a practical and well-equipped CNG sedan that makes a stronger case than its predecessor.

Tata Aeris Mileage

Tata has not revealed official mileage figures for the Tata Aeris yet. The petrol version uses the same powertrain as the pre-facelift Tiago, which returned 13.30kpl in the city and 16.60kpl on the highway in our 2022 test. We expect the Aeris petrol to be similar.

We have not tested the CNG version yet either, but we expect it to return 25 to 30km/kg in the real world. We will share our tested figures once we put the Aeris through our standard tests.

I am confused between the Tata Punch AMT iCNG, Tata Aeris AMT iCNG and Honda Amaze automatic with CNG. Which would be better for a family of four with a mix of city and highway driving?

Verified
•4d

For a family of four doing a mix of city and highway driving, the Tata Aeris iCNG AMT is the best all-rounder of the three. Being a sedan, it gives you more rear-seat room and better highway stability than the Tata Punch. Its twin-cylinder CNG setup also leaves you a usable 227-litre boot, so weekend luggage isn't a problem. The Punch iCNG AMT uses the same twin-cylinder layout and gets a 210-litre boot. Its higher ground clearance and compact size make it easier to live with in tight city traffic and on bad roads. However, it's a smaller car overall, and four adults will feel more cramped on long drives. The Honda Amaze is the most refined car here, and its CVT is far smoother than the AMTs in both Tata cars. Keep in mind, though, that Honda doesn't sell a factory-fitted CNG Amaze. CNG comes as a dealer-fitted kit, so check with your dealer that it's offered on the CVT. That kit uses a single large cylinder, which takes up most of the Amaze's 416-litre boot.
