I own a 2022 Tata Altroz NA and want to upgrade to a bigger car that comfortably seats five people, within a budget of around ₹22 lakh. The Altroz has a very low driver's seating position, which caused backache on long drives, especially considering my height of 6 feet. It also felt a bit underpowered. For my next car, I am confused between the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7 variant, the new Kia Seltos HTX variant, and the upcoming Renault Duster. My daily driving will include both city and highway usage, with occasional trips to the hills. Please compare these cars and suggest the most suitable option in terms of comfort, engine power and refinement, mileage, and maintenance cost. Also, should I now be considering a turbo engine instead of a naturally aspirated one, and should I opt for a manual or automatic transmission?

The Mahindra XUV 7XO is the most spacious and comfortable of the three options you are considering. The front seats are large and supportive, and the driver's seat is height-adjustable with soft cushioning and good support, which results in comfortable seating for taller adults. The rear seats are also very comfortable, and there is plenty of legroom and headroom for tall passengers. The 7XO is also the most powerful of the three options, and the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is very refined. It is also quite efficient, and you can expect a mileage of around 10-12kpl in the city and 14-16kpl on the highway.
The Kia Seltos is a good option if you want a more compact SUV. It is not as spacious as the XUV 7XO, but it is still quite comfortable. The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine is very refined and quite efficient. The Seltos is packed with features, but it just does not have the performance and comfort of the 7XO.
The Renault Duster is the least spacious of the three options, and it is also the least powerful. We are yet to drive it, so we will reserve our comments until we do so. Overall, our pick would be the Mahindra XUV 7XO for its strong performance, excellent ride comfort, spacious interiors and a feature-rich cabin.

I own a Hyryder hybrid and enjoy driving it. I now want to buy a new SUV with a budget of ₹25 lakh. My driving is 70% city and 30% highway, with an annual running of around 13,500 km. I am fine with a 5-seater as long as it offers decent mileage, comfort, and a stylish design. Please advise.

Be prepared that none of the options on sale can match the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder hybrid's outstanding fuel efficiency, especially in urban conditions. The new Kia Seltos diesel-automatic is an option you could consider for its modern and tech-laden approach, comfortable ride quality and smooth and efficient powertrain. If you don't mind driving a slightly larger vehicle, the new Mahindra XUV 7XO is another excellent option you could consider.

Hello Team Auto Car, I work with the Indian army and currently posted at Delhi. Expecting my tranfer to ( ***** MP ) by March mid. Currently im dring a Hyundai Creta. I have four members in my family. My husband drives a Verna. I have decided to buy a new SUV and considering Tata Sierra, Mahindra 7 XO, or new Hyundai Creta. My usage is very limited like any other Army Officer. My residence would be in the near vicinity of our establishment. But we do travel once in three month to holiday spots and once in a year to my native place, Kerala. I prefer petrol to diesel. I have a budget of upto 15 lakhs ( CSD ) Which one of the above SUV you guys suggest. Or any machines other than what i have considered is better? Please guide. Jai Hind

The Mahindra XUV 7XO is an excellent option. Besides being spacious and very comfortable, it is feature-rich and its turbo-petrol engine delivers strong performance. Also, its newer suspension setup results in a plush ride quality at all times, making it an excellent long-distance tourer too.

The new-generation Creta's launch is still some time away, however the new Kia Seltos has been recently launched, and it is also a fantastic option you could consider if you want an SUV that's a bit more compact than the XUV 7XO. You could opt for the 1.5 petrol-automatic version, that's our pick of the Seltos range, for its smoothness, refinement and overall convenience.

I want a decent upgrade from my EcoSport. We are a family of three and have a driver. I am considering the Tata Sierra diesel, but the Mahindra XEV 9S also looks appealing. Since it is a seven-seater, will it be convenient for a small family, or should I consider something else in the ₹20-25 lakh range?

We would recommend the Mahindra XUV 7XO with the diesel engine and an automatic gearbox. The newly updated 7XO has excellent performance, and improvements to the suspension have significantly enhanced ride comfort. The cabin is spacious, and the extra row of seats can be used for short journeys or folded down to use as a large boot space. The AX7 packs in a lot of features like a passenger screen and a panoramic sunroof.

I currently have a 2013 Grand i10 petrol top variant, and I am planning to upgrade to the MG Hector Plus Petrol CVT Savvy Pro variant. I find it very comfortable, premium-feeling, and value for money. My yearly driving is around 9,000 km, with 40% in the city and 60% on the highway. I do have a doubt because sales in India are quite low for this car. Is it a good buy for me?

The MG Hector Plus is a great value for money, delivering a lot of bang for your buck, especially when it comes to space and comfort, both of which are excellent. It's also very well-equipped, although its large touchscreen is laggy and has been known to have glitches.
Sales have slowed compared to when the SUV was launched in 2019, as newer or updated competition has entered the segment. Although the Hector has received its own share of updates, including the smoother CVT replacing the old DCT gearbox, they have not been as comprehensive as others.
Another drawback is that there is no diesel automatic option, which buyers in this segment want, and which rivals such as the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV 7XO do offer. Additionally, the petrol CVT powertrain has very poor fuel efficiency, which is something you should keep in mind, given your high usage.

I’m 72 years old. At present, I drive a Maruti Swift. My running is not too much and is limited to local driving. My budget is around ₹25 lakh. I want a 5-seater petrol automatic SUV with good height and strong road presence. Which vehicle would you recommend?

You can pick the Mahindra XUV 7XO, the AX7T Petrol AT variant. Although on paper it is listed as a 7-seater, it satisfies all your other requirements. It has great road presence, been refreshed recently, and looks more muscular now.
This Mahindra car offers a commanding driving position, easy ingress and egress for the first two rows, and it is well-equipped. Its third row is practically unusable by adults, and you can fold it flat to open up a large boot space. It has a 2-litre turbo Petrol engine, which has strong performance, and the 6-speed AT is a smooth unit. The ride quality has been improved and optimised for handling Indian roads.

Hi, I'm 30 years old and planning to purchase (used or new) a 7-seater car for my family. I travel frequently to my farmland and do 2 to 3 full-family long trips each year. My budget is around 20-25 lakh. I've shortlisted 3 vehicles. 7XO, Scorpio N and Innova Crysta (used or new) by November 2026. I’d really appreciate your advice on which one would be a better fit for power, comfort, ease of driving, and overall value within my budget.

Avoid the Mahindra Scorpio N as a seven-seater, as its third row is too cramped and is best for occasional use by children only. The XUV 7XO is a much better option, as it offers more usable space and is a far more sophisticated offering. It has powerful engines, good features and is easy to drive around town, and capable on the highway.
However, your best bet is really the Toyota Innova Crysta, which remains the ultimate long-distance seven seater. It has the most space in the third row, robust suspension to handle heavy loads and a tough ladder frame chassis with rear-wheel drive to handle broken rural sections and hills. Plus, it is incredibly reliable and will run for years with minimal fuss.
It may be discontinued in 2027, so grab it while you can before the year is done, but rest assured, Toyota will be able to support you with parts and maintenance for many years to come. It is on the expensive side of your budget, however, so you could either settle for a mid-range model, or else go for a second-hand example that hasn't got too many kilometres on it.

Hi, I want to buy an SUV with more power than the Hyundai Creta. The main purpose is to go on trips to the hills - I don’t need serious off-roading. I want a plush, reasonably fuel-efficient SUV; I don’t need a six-seater. My budget is around ₹20-25 lakhs. I live in Delhi - does a diesel vehicle make sense for average annual driving of 10-12k km?

Since you want more power than your current Hyundai Creta, the best option for you is the recently launched Mahindra XUV 7XO.

Considering your Delhi NCR location and your limited running of under 12,000 km a year, we would recommend the petrol version. The turbo petrol engine is powerful, refined, and delivers effortless performance, making it a clear upgrade over your Creta.

Given Delhi conditions, we would also suggest the 6-speed torque converter automatic. It is smooth, quick shifting, and will make daily driving far less stressful.

With the facelift, Mahindra has also improved the ride quality, added more features, and overall, the 7XO feels more premium and modern inside and out.

Within your budget, you can go for the AX7 variant, which is well-loaded and comes with all the features you would expect at this price point.

Hi, I want to buy a new car with a budget of ₹20 lakhs. I am interested in a full-size SUV, not a compact one, and I prefer an automatic transmission. My monthly running will be around 1,500 km, with about half of that on highways. Which car should I choose?

We would recommend you go for the recently launched Mahindra XUV 7XO. Although your running is not that high, we would still recommend you choose the diesel variant as the petrol engine, though silky smooth and powerful, is not very fuel efficient. And considering half your driving is on the highway, there is an unlikely chance of facing any DPF-related issues with the diesel variant.

The diesel engine is also refined, and the 6-speed torque converter automatic is smooth and quick shifting, which makes city driving and highway overtakes effortless. In your budget, you can get the AX5 diesel AT, which is well-equipped.

I am 54 years old and enjoy driving. My daily office commute is 10 to 20 km. Once a year, I drive about 2,000 km to my native place. I am confused between the Creta and Sierra, and I am also open to the 7XO, Harrier, etc. Please advise.

Given your requirements, the Mahindra XUV 7XO will be a great choice for the long-distance trip. It offers plenty of space, features, and the new suspension gives it a segment-best ride, especially on the highway.
However, if the 7XO is a bit too large in size, the Hyundai Creta is a great all-rounder that offers a good ride, a comfy cabin, lots of tech and features and a strong set of engines and gearbox options. You cannot go wrong with either, and it only boils down to preference in size. If you are okay with a larger SUV, we recommend the 7XO, but if you'd like it to be a bit easier in the city, the Creta is the best bet.
