Hi, I'd like to buy a new 7/8-seater diesel car. I've looked at the Toyota Innova Crysta, Innova HyCross and the Mahindra XUV 7XO. I will mostly be using the car on highways, covering around 50,000km per year. I also want good resale value. Kindly suggest which car would be the best choice.

Buy the Toyota Innova Crysta diesel. For 50,000 km a year on highways, nothing in your list matches its long-distance durability, relaxed cruising and true 7/8-seat comfort. It also holds value better than almost anything else on our roads, and Toyota’s highway service reach makes life easy when you’re far from home.
The honest catch is it isn’t the most modern inside and costs more than the Mahindra, but it pays you back in lower hassle and stronger resale. Innova HyCross doesn’t fit your brief because it’s petrol-hybrid, not diesel. It’s smooth and efficient in the city, but for heavy highway use, a diesel Crysta is cheaper to run.
If you want a second option from your shortlist, look at the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel. It’s quick, packed with features and priced keenly. For resale, though, it still trails the Crysta, and the third row isn’t as adult-friendly on long trips.
So, for a 7/8-seat diesel highway workhorse with the best resale, pick the Innova Crysta.

@jj.4 Maruti Baleno and Toyota Glanza are probably the best options. In compact SUVs, the Maruti Brezza and Honda Elevate also use refined 4-cylinder petrol engines.

I was using a Mhahindra scorpio for 15 years petrol automatic now I want to change to a mahindra scorpio N automatic petrol. My use is minimal about 500km a month or less any suggestions

@jj.4 If you've enjoyed owning your Scorpio and still like its rugged character, the Scorpio N Petrol Automatic is a natural upgrade. It offers much better comfort, safety, performance, and features while retaining that commanding SUV feel you're already familiar with.

There is a variant of the Mahindra Scorpio Classic that comes with captain seats in the second row and a spacious bench seat in the third row. I would recommend considering this model. Personally, I also feel it is a safer option than the Innova Crysta based on my own experience. During a three-day trip, we had hired an Innova Crysta. The driver failed to notice a speed hump and drove over it at speed. I was seated in the third row, and the impact threw me upward, causing my head and neck to hit the roof quite hard. The injuries were severe enough that it took me nearly three months to recover. That experience has made me much more conscious of third-row comfort and safety, which is why I would lean towards the Scorpio Classic.

@balaguru.3 If your budget allows, I’d recommend going for the Kia Carnival or the Defender 130 HSE. To be honest, there aren’t many vehicles in India that offer a genuinely comfortable third row. Most 7-seaters have a third row that’s best suited for children or short trips, whereas the Carnival and Defender 130 provide enough space and comfort for adults on longer journeys.

If you are looking at the Toyota Innova Hycross today, we would not wait for the facelift. Typical of Toyota and especially the Innova, the facelift is unlikely to bring major mechanical changes, and at most there might be a few more feature additions and some cosmetic updates. In fact, the bigger risk is that the facelift could push prices up slightly, which would hurt the value proposition of the GX (O). The Hycross is already a very well-rounded MPV with excellent space, comfort and Toyota’s proven reliability. If you need the car now, there is no strong reason to delay the purchase.

I own a Maruti Vitara Breeza ZDI 2017 model vehicle and the vehicle has completed nearly 69000 km till date. I have moved to Delhi and the issue with not allowing BS4 vehicles to run during winters is looming large. My diesel car will turn 10 year old by June 2027 and so I want to upgrade my to suit my needs. We are a family of 3 and occasionally my mother joins us, sometimes relatives visit us and a pet dog also accompanies us on most of our long drives. I am looking for a car with features like sunroof, large infotainment and ventilated seats. Should it be a petrol, diesel or hybrid vehicle and should it be a 5 or 7 seater? My budget is less than 30 lakhs and I will be owning the vehicle for at least next 10 years.

Your annual running is relatively low, so a petrol makes more sense than a diesel or strong hybrid, especially considering Delhi's regulations and your plan to keep the car for the next 10 years. The XUV 7XO offers a spacious cabin, a usable third row for occasional family trips, plenty of luggage space with the third row folded for your pet, and comes loaded with the features you're looking for.The Kia Carens Clavis Turbo Petrol DCT is the more practical alternative. It offers even better interior space and practicality, especially if you expect to use the third row more often, the 1.5 turbo DCT has enough power and will be more efficient but it doesn't feel as rugged or as SUV-like as the Mahindra.

Hi, I currently drive a 2014 Maruti Suzuki Dzire Petrol and am planning to upgrade to a new SUV. My shortlisted options are the Kia Seltos HTX(A) DCT and the Mahindra XUV 7XO Petrol Automatic. My biggest concern with the XUV 7XO is its low fuel efficiency. My monthly running is less than 1,000 km, as I work from home, with a 60:40 city-to-highway split in the NCR. I also plan to use the new car for trips to the mountains, so it should offer strong performance, sufficient torque, and confident handling. I also test-drove the new Renault Duster and loved the driving experience, but I wasn't impressed by Renault's showroom and after-sales experience. Which of these would you recommend for my requirements?

Go for the Volkswagen Taigun 1.5 TSI Sport. Coming from a Polo and Vento automatic, you already appreciate Volkswagen’s driving DNA, and the Taigun 1.5 TSI is a natural progression. The engine is punchy, the DSG gearbox is quick and engaging, and the overall driving experience is far more involving than the Seltos. The Taigun also feels more compact and agile in the city, while still being comfortable on the highway. The Volkswagen Taigun mileage is 19.54 kpl for the 1.0 TSI AT, 19.98 kpl for the 1.0 TSI MT, and 18.85 kpl for the 1.5 TSI DCT.The Kia Seltos diesel X-Line is a strong all-rounder with better space, a more premium cabin and a more relaxed long-distance character, but it does not offer the same level of driver engagement. The diesel engine is efficient and torquey, but it lacks the excitement of the 1.5 TSI. Given your history with Volkswagen cars, the Taigun will simply feel more familiar and more enjoyable to drive every day. The Taigun price starts at Rs 11.00 lakh (ex-showroom).

With 5,000-7,000 km a year and mostly city driving, you are the ideal EV buyer. The Mahindra XEV 9S in its top-spec Pack Three guise will comfortably fit in your budget. With a 79kWh battery pack, you can easily expect a real-world range of around 480km in daily driving conditions. The 9S is also a full-size SUV with three rows, so practicality is excellent. There is a usable frunk as well, and the feature list is extensive with connected tech, panoramic sunroof, front and rear ventilated seats, drive modes, Level 2 ADAS and much more. Also, with 286hp, the 9S has plenty of performance for everyday needs. The overall package strikes a good balance and hence is our recommendation.
