We like

  • Tough-as-nails

  • Feels built to last

We don't like

  • Not refined like other compact SUVs

  • Some missing features

The Neo retains the TUVโ€™s boxy form but with key changes: the body sits 20mm lower on the ladder-frame chassis, improving stance and reducing the wheel arch gap. While it tries to blend ruggedness with style using Bolero-like touches (grille, cladding), its design feels more urban. The 15-inch wheels appear undersized, and the overall look doesnโ€™t quite match the traditional Boleroโ€™s rough-road persona.

Cabin access is easier thanks to the lowered ride height. The interior, carried over from the TUV300, is more modern than the original Bolero's but still utilitarian. It gets a dual-tone dashboard, a 7-inch touchscreen, and chair-like front seats. The second row offers decent comfort, but the side-facing jump seats are best foldedโ€”tight on space and unsafe in a crash. Cargo capacity with seats folded is 384 litres.

The 1.5L 3-cylinder diesel (100hp/260Nm) with a variable-geometry turbo impresses with smoothness and low-end driveability. Power delivery is linear and gear shifts are light, though high-speed performance is limited. It's not fast, but it feels refined and responsive at low to mid speedsโ€”ideal for rural or load-bearing use. No automatic option yet, though one may follow.

Mahindra claims 17.29โ€ฏkm/l. In real-world mixed conditions, expect around 12โ€“15โ€ฏkm/l. Features like Eco mode and auto stop-start help, but its weight does impact efficiency.

The Neo shines off-road. Its tough body-on-frame setup and rugged suspension can handle rough terrain with ease. The optional MLD (on N10 O) transfers power effectively in low-traction situations, though it engages with a metallic clang that might startle new drivers. Body roll is present but improved over the TUV300 thanks to a lower centre of gravity.

The top N10 variant offers essentials like ABS, dual airbags, touchscreen, and cruise control. However, it misses several modern featuresโ€”no reversing camera, auto climate control, or smartphone connectivity. An upcoming N10 (O) variant will add a mechanical locking differential (MLD), boosting off-road capability.

Priced at Rs 9.97โ€“12.18 lakh, the Neo offers better value than the standard Bolero. It wonโ€™t appeal to city SUV buyers looking for finesse, but for those wanting a durable, rear-wheel-drive, 7-seater with real-world toughness and better refinement, the Bolero Neo is a solid pick. With added features and capability, itโ€™s worthy of the Bolero badge.

I own alto 2020 model, want to upgrade to bigger suv, budget is around 10 lakhs, is bolero neo N11 a good option for me ?

The ex-showroom price of the Mahindra Bolero Neo N11 is Rs 10 lakh, so you will have to account for costs of insurance, registration and other charges. That said, the Bolero Neo is a rugged SUV, with a surprisingly refined 1.5L diesel engine. Also, it has the ability to seat seven, which gives it an edge over the 5-seater monocoque compact SUVs available at a similar price.

However, if you don't need that extra pair of jump seats, we'd recommend you to consider the Maruti Brezza or Mahindra XUV 3XO instead, which are a lot easier and more car-like to drive, and their driving dynamics are also much better than the Bolero Neo. These compact SUVs feel surprisingly robust, however if your usage majorly includes bad and broken roads, the Bolero Neo could be the better pick, simply for its toughness and abuse-friendliness.

Asked by: Sanjay Jainon Jan 12, 2026

I have not yet purchased the Mahindra Bolero Neo Plus 9-seater P10. Is it good for long road trips across India?

The Mahindra Bolero Neo is a rugged, ladder-frame-based SUV renowned for its robust build quality. However, it's not the best option for long road trips as its on-road ride quality is quite bouncy. The ride comfort is not on par with modern, monocoque SUVs, and the seats aren't supportive enough for long durations.

If you are looking for a more comfortable and refined alternative, consider the base Kia Carens Premium (O) diesel-MT, priced at Rs 12.77 lakh (ex-showroom).

Asked by: GIRIDHARon Dec 25, 2025

My daily driving is about 50 km, mostly in the city. I am 56 years old and suffer from back pain. Is it good to buy a Mahindra Bolero or a Bolero Neo? Kindly advise.

If you have back pain, you need a car with well-contoured seats and good lumbar support. In this context, the Mahindra Bolero and Mahindra Bolero Neo are not ideal choices. Their seats are not particularly supportive, and the ride quality is on the firmer side, which may aggravate your discomfort.

Instead, the Citroen Aircross X is a better fit. The latest updates have improved the interior quality, the seats are comfortable, and the ride quality is excellent.

Its suspension setup does an excellent job of ironing out bad roads, making it a comfortable and back-friendly option.

I am interested in buying a Bolero Neo, but my running is very low - only about 100 km every 2 to 3 months. Is it viable to buy it, especially since my son also likes that car?

If you and your son like the Mahindra Bolero Neo, you can go ahead and buy it. Itโ€™s a solid car and will take the potholes and bad roads in Mumbai quite easily.

Itโ€™s also quite easy to drive, but lacks the features and polish of other SUVs. However, with your limited running, you will need to do a short highway drive of around 25-30 minutes every month. This will keep regenerating your DPF, making it soot-free and preventing it from clogging.

I am a police officer and want to buy an SUV with a budget of around โ‚น11/12 lakh. My job involves some rough driving, and about 80 percent of my driving is on the highway. I plan to keep the vehicle for at least 5-7 years without selling it. I want a diesel car with good mileage, and my daily running is 50/60 km.

Given your requirements for rugged and tough suspension, the Mahindra Bolero Neo will be a good option to consider. It has a torquey diesel engine that has good power delivery, and thanks to the rear-wheel drive layout, it is a bit better in hilly areas as well. The N10 (O) variant will fit in your budget and gets a decent kit like a reversing camera, cruise control and a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen.
The other option that is good over rough roads and highways is the Tata Nexon diesel in the Pure Plus variant. It has more power and is more modern-looking, but it isn't as tough as the Bolero, and in this price range, you won't get many features. Also, its front-wheel drive layout puts it at a disadvantage when it comes to driving uphill and in challenging terrain.

We are a family of six, and I am looking to buy a 7-seater manual SUV under 16 lakh. I prefer a body-on-frame design. My shortlisted options are the Scorpio Classic, Bolero Neo, and Bolero. Among these, please suggest the better choice for balanced city and highway use.

Among the three options on your shortlist, the Mahindra Scorpio Classic is the best option. It's got the most powerful engine of the three, which you will particularly appreciate on highway drives.
The Scorpio Classic S is the one that will fit your budget, but it comes with basic features. If you need more features, the Bolero Neo N10 packs in a fair bit.

It must be highlighted that all three options you are considering have side-facing third row seats. These are not as safe as front-facing seats, and we'd strongly advise against this configuration.
There isn't any body on frame alternative within your budget, but you should instead consider monocoque MPVs like the Kia Carens Clavis and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.

Iโ€™m a frequent reader of this section. Iโ€™m looking for a car that can comfortably seat five people. My priorities are safety, fuel efficiency, and low maintenance. My budget is below โ‚น10 lakh, and Iโ€™m open to hatchbacks, sedans, or compact SUVs. Please suggest.

Given your requirement for seating five passengers, an SUV would be a good choice. Under โ‚น10 lakh, the Mahindra Bolero Neo is a good option. This Mahindra car has a roomy cabin with good space for five and a frugal diesel engine that offers low running costs and low maintenance.
If not the Bolero Neo, you can check out the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, but beware, you will only get the base version under your budget, which will not be as well-equipped.

Iโ€™m 30 years old and currently drive a 2011 Santro Xing. I want to buy a new car (budget โ‚น9โ€“12 lakh). I drive 40โ€“50 km per day and live in Kargil, Ladakh, so the car must handle high altitude, cold starts, rough/uneven roads, and be reliable. What car would you recommend and why?

There are plenty of options in your price range of Rs 9-12 lakh. However, if you mean that the conditions you drive through are rough and mountainous, then perhaps an SUV would suit you better than a sedan or a hatchback. Check out the Mahindra Bolero Neo, which has recently been given a facelift and an update, including a more modern touchscreen option. With its tough ladder-frame chassis, robust suspension, torquey diesel engine and rear-wheel-drive layout, it is excellent in hilly conditions and over rough surfaces.

I want to buy a new car for my dad. His daily run is 50 km, occasionally 150-200 km, plus two village trips of about 1,600 km round trip. He wants an SUV under โ‚น10 lakh. Please suggest at least two options and the recommended variant.

The best option for the mentioned commute would be the Mahindra Bolero Neo. It has a strong, smooth, and powerful diesel engine, a comfortable ride on B-roads and highways, and easy seating thanks to the high seating position.
The second option would be the Mahindra XUV 3XO, the MX3 Pro variant with the petrol engine and manual gearbox. It is also easy to drive, but the diesel-engine versions would be out of budget.
We recommend the Bolero Neo as the preferred choice.

My budget is โ‚น12โ€“13 lakh. I drive about 1,500โ€“2,000 km monthly and make frequent trips to hill stations. EV and CNG are not options. I need a reliable, mileage-oriented vehicle I can keep for at least 10 years. Please suggest suitable models.

Based on your requirement, the Bolero Neo is a good choice. It has a punchy diesel engine that offers low running costs, and being rear-wheel drive, it is better to drive in hilly areas with no struggles. You can get the N10 version with the manual gearbox.
If the Bolero Neo is not to your taste, the Tata Nexon Pure + S Diesel variant is a good option too. But it is a front-wheel drive SUV and not as hardy as the Bolero is.
