    Most powerful SUVs under Rs 25 lakh

    The Indian market has been witnessing a surge in the popularity of SUVs over the past few years. Accordingly, manufacturers are vying for a bigger slice of this segment by introducing a slew of competitive products, especially in the mid-size SUV space, leaving buyers spoilt for choice. So, we’ve compiled a list of the most powerful SUVs under Rs 25 lakh.

    Hyundai Creta 1.5 turbo-petrol 

    The Hyundai Creta’s sole turbo-petrol variant is priced at Rs 20 lakh onwards; the dual-tone version costs an extra Rs 15,000. The SUV’s 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine puts out 160hp and 253Nm of torque and is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch auto as standard. This engine can also be had with a 6-speed manual gearbox on the Creta N Line, which is essentially the sportier version of the mid-size SUV. The Creta N Line is priced between Rs 16.82 lakh and Rs 20.45 lakh.

    Kia Seltos 1.5 turbo-petrol 

    Creta’s cousin, Kia Seltos, uses the same 160hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine on the higher trims. On the Seltos, this engine is paired with a 6-speed iMT (clutchless manual) or an optional 7-speed DCT. Pricing for the Kia Seltos turbo-petrol starts from Rs 15.45 lakh, going up to Rs 20.35 lakh for the range-topping X-Line variant.

    Hyundai Alcazar 1.5 turbo petrol

    Yet another SUV to make use of the 160hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine is the Hyundai Alcazar, Creta's three-row sibling. The turbo-petrol variants of the SUV are priced between Rs 16.77 lakh-20.64 lakh. The Alcazar is set to receive a mid-life makeover around the festive season this year which will see it get ADAS safety tech and a new design inside-out.

    Jeep Compass 2.0 diesel

    In India, Jeep offers the Compass with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 170hp and 350Nm of torque and comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 9-speed torque converter automatic. The Compass also offers a choice between 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains. The pricing for the SUV starts at Rs 20.69 lakh and goes up to Rs 32.41 lakh. 

    MG Hector 2.0 diesel

    The MG Hector borrows the Jeep Compass’ 2.0-litre diesel engine in the same 170hp state of tune. However, MG only offers the engine with a 6-speed manual transmission; prices range between Rs 17.70 lakh and 21.90 lakh. This engine is also offered with the three-row Hector Plus, which costs Rs 17 lakh–Rs 22.30 lakh.

    Tata Safari 2.0 diesel

    Priced in the Rs 16.19 lakh–27.34 lakh range, Tata Safari also gets the same FCA-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine as the Hector, making 170hp and 350Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed MT and an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic. 

    Tata Harrier 2.0 diesel

    Mahindra Scorpio N 2.2 diesel

    The Mahindra Scorpio N’s 2.2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine generates 175hp and 400Nm in its higher state of tune and is available from the Z4 variant onwards, which is priced at Rs 17.55 lakh. Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic, with an optional 4WD configuration.

    MG ZS EV 

    The MG ZS EV’s single electric motor setup produces 177hp and 280Nm of peak torque. The motor is powered by a 50.3kWh battery pack, providing a range of up to 461km on a single full charge. The ZS EV is priced between Rs 18.98 lakh and Rs 25.20 lakh.

    Mahindra XUV700 2.2 diesel 

    The Mahindra XUV700 gets a 2.2-litre diesel engine that generates 185hp and 450Nm on the higher variants. The engine is mated to a 6-speed MT or an optional 6-speed AT with a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The prices for the XUV700 diesel (185hp) start at Rs 16.99 lakh and go up to Rs 26.99 lakh. 

    Mahindra XUV700 2.0 turbo-petrol

    The XUV700’s 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 200hp and 380Nm, making it the second most powerful SUV in India under Rs 25 lakh. The price range is Rs 13.99 lakh–25.54 lakh. The XUV700 petrol is available with a front-wheel drive configuration as standard. Mahindra recently introduced a new mid-level AX5 Select trim for the XUV700 with a panoramic sunroof and a seven-seat layout.

    Mahindra Scorpio N 2.0 turbo-petrol 

    The Mahindra Scorpio N’s 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is the same as the XUV700; however, it produces an extra 3hp. With an output of 203hp, the Scorpio N turbo-petrol is the most powerful SUV under Rs 25 lakh. It is available with 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT gearbox options but with RWD only. The pricing starts at Rs 13.85 lakh and goes up to Rs 21.98 lakh.
