Boot space on strong hybrid
Performance lacks punch
The Grand Vitara combines SUV styling with hybrid tech. Its bold front, high-mounted LEDs, chrome-heavy nose, and distinctive grille give it strong road presence. Built on Suzukiโs Global C platform, itโs robustly built and the longest in its class. The range includes a 103hp 1.5L mild hybrid engine with optional AWD and hill descent control. The highlight is the 116hp strong hybrid powertrain from Toyota, featuring an Atkinson cycle engine, fast-spinning e-motor for high-speed EV mode, and a 0.76kWh lithium-ion battery. Though boot space is limited to 255L in this version due to battery placement, the setup ensures impressive efficiency and unique drive characteristics.
8.0
The Grand Vitara impresses with a layered dashboard, chrome accents, leather touches, and a panoramic sunroof that brightens the cabin. The 9-inch infotainment screen is well-placed, while chunky AC controls and digital dials (in the hybrid) add functionality. Some plastics feel cheap, but overall build is solid. Front seats offer great supportโeven for taller driversโand rear legroom is ample. However, cabin width is limited and headroom tight for taller passengers.
7.0
The 103hp mild hybrid engine is smooth and responsive at low speeds but lacks punch at higher revs. The manual gearbox is engaging; the auto, though smooth, drains performance. The Toyota-derived strong hybrid starts in EV mode and glides at city speeds. Refinement is good overall despite the three cylinder, with good throttle response at low engine speeds thanks to electric assist. Acceleration to 100kph takes around 12 secondsโwhich is not as quick as turbo rivals, but the hybrid offers a very reponsive, uniquely relaxed and efficient driving experience.
8.0
The strong hybridโs highlight is its impressive fuel economy. Despite a mix of highway sprints and city traffic, it delivered over 18kpl. With more restrained driving, real-world figures beyond 20kpl are easily achievable. The 1.5 DualJet mild hybrid also performs well, maintaining Marutiโs tradition of efficiency leadership in its class. Whether you go mild or strong hybrid, the Grand Vitara sets the benchmark for mileage-conscious buyers without too much compromise on everyday usability.
9.0
The Grand Vitara shines with good bump absorption, even over broken roads. Despite its ground clearance, there's minimal vertical movement, making it comfortable and composed. Steering is well-weighted, visibility is good, and it feels nimble in traffic. Itโs also stable and confident at highway speeds. On twisty roads, the handling feels secure and even funโsurprisingly agile for an SUV of its size. The 4WD version, with its โlockโ function, handled slush and inclines with ease during off-road tests, showing that itโs more than just a soft-roader.
8.0
Features & Safety Well-equipped across variants, the Grand Vitara offers features like a 360-degree camera, wireless phone connectivity, heads-up display, remote AC start, and rear vents with dual USB ports. The 60:40 split seats are handy, especially for the strong hybridโs smaller boot. Safety kit includes rear disc brakes, electronic stability control, ISOFIX mounts, and full seatbelt coverage. Base variants get dual airbags, while higher trims gain side and curtain airbags. While rivals may offer powered seats, the feature set here is competitive and ticks most boxes in the segment.
8.0
The Grand Vitara combines modern SUV looks, a well-designed cabin, practical features, and hybrid powertrain options. The strong hybrid brings segment-leading efficiency, while the mild hybrid offers a more affordable entry point with optional 4WD. While rear seat width and boot space on the hybrid are limited, and power delivery could be stronger, it remains a well-rounded SUV. At โน20.68 lakh for the Alpha+ strong hybrid, it's competitively priced against rivals like the Creta turbo and Toyota Hyryder, delivering strong value with standout fuel economy and technology.

Trending Questions on Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara - Answered by Autocar Experts
I own a 2018 Maruti Swift petrol manual. I am now looking for a bigger car with good ground clearance and better fuel efficiency. My daily commute is about 25 km. I liked the Tata Sierra. Should I wait for the Sierra EV or consider hybrids like the Grand Vitara? Hybrids come at a higher premium. Are they worth it, or should I go for an EV?
My maximum budget is โน23 lakh, and I will be driving mainly in the city for about 1800-2000 km per month. I am comparing the Tata Harrier (petrol automatic) with the Skoda Kushaq (petrol automatic with DSG). Which variant should I choose for my usage?
Since your running is quite high and that too in the city, a strong hybrid powertrain would be a good option to consider. The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara or the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder are mid-size SUVs with a strong hybrid powertrain and are excellent in the city. The battery and motor provide enough power for everyday driving, and they offer good ride comfort too.
That said, if you do not prefer a strong-hybrid SUV, the new updated Skoda Kushaq will be launching soon. It gets the same engine as before, but the 1.0-litre TSI motor will not get an 8-speed automatic instead. If you are a keen driver and enjoy getting behind the wheel, the Kushaq would be a better choice.
We would recommend that you wait for the launch. The Tata Harrier just got a new petrol engine, which is refined, but it's a bit too big for the city and isn't as polished as the Kushaq.
I am considering an automatic, and the choice is between the Kylaq AT, Elevate CVT, and Grand Vitara (GV). I would like to consider the Kylaq, but since my monthly driving is less than 500 km and mostly in the city, would a naturally aspirated engine be better? I plan to keep the car for at least 10 years and want it to be reliable, low-maintenance, with a minimum 4-star safety rating and NVH quality comparable to my 2010 Honda Jazz. I am also willing to consider other SUVs or raised hatchbacks that meet these criteria. Please advise.
If you like the Skoda Kylaq AT, go ahead. Itโs a very good car to drive, feels solid, and is the most engaging of the three. Low running will naturally minimise wear and tear, and modern turbo-petrol engines are perfectly fine for city use as long as theyโre maintained properly. Donโt overthink the naturally aspirated vs turbo debate purely from a reliability standpoint - upkeep matters more.
The Honda Elevate CVT and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara are bigger and more spacious, and both are sensible, comfortable choices. The Elevateโs naturally aspirated engine is smooth and predictable, and the Grand Vitara scores well on efficiency. However, neither feels as enjoyable or as tight to drive as the Kylaq.
Given your priorities - long-term ownership, decent safety, good NVH and low running - the Kylaq fits well if driving feel matters to you. If space and a more relaxed nature matter more, then the Elevate would be the calmer choice. But purely from the heart-and-head balance, the Kylaq is the one we would pick.
I own a Grand Vitara full hybrid (2WD) and am planning a road trip from Mumbai to Tawang and back. Given the hilly terrain and road conditions, will the car be capable of handling the journey effectively, considering it does not have a manual gearbox? Please advise.
Your Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara strong hybrid (2WD) is actually well suited for a long road trip from Mumbai to Tawang and back, even though it doesnโt have a manual gearbox.
Itโs true that with a manual, you can lock yourself into a specific gear and control engine braking more precisely in the hills. That said, the Grand Vitaraโs e-CVT is not a conventional rubber-band type CVT. In the strong hybrid system, the e-CVT works in conjunction with the electric motor, so response at low speeds is immediate and smooth.
On steep inclines, the instant torque delivery from the electric motor helps the car move off cleanly without the lag you sometimes associate with traditional automatics.
Another big advantage in the mountains is the โBโ (Brake) mode. This increases regenerative braking, which means the car slows down more effectively on descents while also charging the battery more aggressively. On long downhill stretches, which you will encounter plenty of on the way to Tawang, this reduces the need to constantly ride the brakes and adds a layer of control.
With a combined system output of 116hp and 144Nm from the electric motor available instantly, the Grand Vitara hybrid does not feel underpowered in typical hill driving conditions. As long as you drive sensibly, anticipate overtakes and maintain momentum on climbs, it will manage the terrain without drama.
The only thing to keep in mind is that this is a 2WD SUV. So, while it can comfortably handle broken roads and regular mountain terrain, itโs not meant for hardcore off-roading or very slushy, unpaved sections. Check road conditions closer to your travel date and ensure your tyres are in good condition.
Overall, your Grand Vitara is perfectly capable of handling this trip. Drive with a bit of mechanical sympathy, use โBโ mode smartly on descents, and you should be able to enjoy the journey as much as the destination
I want to buy an automatic SUV and have shortlisted a few names: the new Kia Seltos IVT, Honda Elevate CVT, and Grand Vitara Smart Hybrid AT. The confusion is that everyone says that the Honda Elevate CVT engine is good, but is it the right choice to buy the Elevate in today's time? Should I buy the Kia Seltos IVT? Is the Grand Vitara also competitive? Which of these three SUVs is best if I want decent performance, decent mileage, suitability for both traffic and highways, and occasional hill drives? Which automatic NA engine is best when travelling with five people and luggage? Please guide me.
Hi, I am planning to buy a car for our family, which will be primarily used by my dad and occasionally by me as well. Currently, he drives a Maruti Ciaz diesel. The plan was to go for an SUV with a budget of โน18-21 lakh. We were thinking of the Hyundai Creta Diesel Automatic or the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid. Alternatively, we also had the new Kia Seltos and new XUV700 in mind, given their price range. His main priorities are: Smooth driving experience (including smooth suspension) Very good rear seat space (including legroom - as the Ciaz offers very good space) Good luggage space Decent mileage (13-15 km/l in city and 18-20 km/l on highways) Low maintenance and minimal headaches for 5-6 years Considering these, can you guide us on which could be the best option and the specific model we should go for? The expected driving range would be more than 500 km per month.
If you want very good legroom that matches the Honda Ciaz and a smooth driving experience, the Mahindra XUV 7XO 2.2 diesel AT is a good choice. Mahindra has upgraded the rear suspension, and the ride quality and handling have improved significantly.
Rear seat space is excellent, and luggage space is very good, especially with the third row folded down. The trade-off is that the 7XO is a big, heavy SUV. It doesnโt feel as nimble in city traffic and tight parking, and it isnโt very efficient compared to the other options.
If fuel efficiency is a higher priority for you, then the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara strong hybrid (or its mechanically similar cousin, the Victoris hybrid) will give you much better economy. It delivers smooth performance, easy city driving and the efficiency figures youโre aiming for.
The Hyundai Creta diesel AT is also a solid, more efficient choice than the 7XO, with a comfortable ride and easy usability in town traffic.
After the Ciaz, youโll likely feel most at home in the 7XO because of the space and comfort it offers. But if you prefer better efficiency and a slightly smaller, easier-to-live-with package, the Grand Vitara hybrid or the Creta diesel automatic are both good alternatives within your budget.
I want to buy an SUV with an automatic transmission, and I am unable to choose between the Grand Vitara Zeta and the Seltos. My budget is โน15-16 lakh. I need only the basic required features and prefer low maintenance. My average usage is about 4,000-5,000 km per year. Please suggest a suitable car.
Considering your priorities are low maintenance, and you don't have a need for high-tech features, then the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is the better choice for you.
Do note, however, that with the automatic gearbox, the Grand Vitara Zeta costs closer to Rs 18 lakh on road; in your budget, you will have to choose the lower Delta AT variant.
The Kia Seltos HTE (O) IVT is available in your budget too, and for that price, you get a larger, more spacious SUV with higher-quality interiors. It evenly matches the Grand Vitara Delta AT on basic features, though each has a few advantages over the other.
And while the Seltos is smoother and more powerful, the Grand Vitara has much better mileage. Overall, considering what you are looking for, the Maruti seems like the better pick.
Hi Team, I am looking for a mid-size SUV under Rs 20 lakhs with a diesel option. My usage will be 80% highway and 20% city. I was looking at the Seltos diesel version. Kindly suggest how to proceed further.
My monthly running is between 2500 and 3500 km. I am currently using a diesel car and prefer to keep it till the warranty. After that, should I buy a diesel or a hybrid for 1000km highway, rest city?
I am looking for an SUV with an automatic transmission, preferably a hybrid (if not, then petrol), large legroom, good boot space, all-around sensors or a 360-degree camera, good infotainment, nice interiors, and climate control. Budget is around โน18 lakh, can stretch to โน20 lakh. I had Kia and Creta in mind, but I am unsure about the variant. There is also no hybrid option in these. I can wait if a better hybrid is coming out within this year.
