Exterior Design And Engineering

6.0

The Astor’s outward-radiating chrome grille, LED headlamps, and sporty touches like red brake calipers give it visual flair. Still, its crossover-like stance lacks the road presence SUV buyers often desire, despite being dimensionally larger than the Creta.

Interior Space And Comfort

8.0

This is where the Astor truly shines. The cabin feels premium, with soft-touch materials, high-quality switchgear, and a striking red interior option. The front seats are wide and cushy, rear space is decent for two adults, though three abreast is tight. Boot space (359 litres) is usefully shaped, and the 60:40 rear split adds flexibility.

Performance And Refinement

7.0

The 1,349cc three-cylinder turbo-petrol impresses with its refinement. It’s quiet at idle and cruise, only getting mildly vocal when pushed. Acceleration is brisk — 0-100kph in 10.23 seconds, top speed 183kph — but the relaxed power delivery doesn’t make it feel particularly sporty.
The 6-speed torque converter feels smooth and CVT-like with gentle throttle inputs but delays downshifts when you demand quick overtakes. The absence of paddle shifters is missed. A unique trait is the slight momentum-holding after lifting off the accelerator, which softens deceleration but takes some getting used to.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

5.0

Fuel efficiency is a weak spot, with real-world figures, especially in city driving, often fall into single digits, making the Astor one of the less efficient options in its class.

Ride Comfort And Handling

7.0

The Astor prioritizes comfort, with its soft suspension soaking up bumps with finesse. However, it feels floaty at higher speeds and exhibits noticeable body roll around corners. Steering modes alter weight but not feedback, and the ‘Urban’ setting suits the car’s easygoing nature. Braking performance is decent — 80-0kph in 26.24m — with a progressive pedal feel.

Features And Safety

8.0

The Astor is generously equipped — ADAS Level 2 tech, panoramic sunroof, digital cluster, AI assistant, 360° camera, and wireless charging, among others. Updates like ventilated seats have improved the package further.
Key ADAS features include adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking, and intelligent speed assist. While not flawless in operation, they enhance safety and could be lifesaving.

Value For Money

7.0

The MG Astor stands out with its refined drivetrain and premium cabin. It’s ideal for those seeking a calm, comfortable, and tech-rich midsize SUV. However, it doesn’t appeal to enthusiasts or those prioritizing efficiency or SUV-like road presence. That said, its solid build quality and upmarket interior make it feel like money well spent. With prices ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 17.55 lakh, the Astor is well worth shortlisting.

MG Astor FAQs

The soft suspension set-up of the Astor allows it to absorb road impacts and surface imperfections at city speeds in a calm and mature manner. Helping matters further is the lack of audible tyre noise, feeling well-contained and not entering the cabin even when driving over coarse surfaces. Soft-touch materials and high-quality switchgear accentuate the sense of comfort further.

The naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine of the Astor may not be the punchiest when compared to the turbo-petrol engines powering the Seltos or Duster, but it’s smooth and refined.

The soft suspension that makes it so bump-absorbent and comfortable in the city at slower speeds, leads to noticeable body roll around corners and some vertical movement at highway speeds. Rivals like the Kia Seltos and Skoda Kushaq feel more at home at higher speeds.

For an on-road price of about Rs 16 lakh, the mid-spec Select CVT variant offers several usable convenience features without feeling short-changed on the safety front. This is also the most affordable Astor automatic variant, which means the convenience of the continuously variable transmission while driving in traffic.

The rear seats of the MG Astor offer its outermost passengers adequate headroom and legroom. While seating three people in the back would be a squeeze, the centre passenger benefits from a low central hump, a dedicated adjustable head restraint and a three-point seatbelt.

I already own the MG Astor manual, but now it is giving too low mileage. I want to buy a new car, please suggest to me a car which is automatic and provides good mileage.

Go for the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder strong-hybrid automatic - it will cut your fuel use sharply, often doing 20-plus kpl in city traffic where the Astor struggles. The automatic is smooth and stress-free, and because the hybrid runs on electric power a lot in stop-and-go, you get far better mileage without changing your driving style. Size, space and comfort are close to your Astor, so the switch is easy. Two things to keep in mind: the hybrid costs more upfront than a regular petrol automatic, and the boot is smaller. Also, when you press hard, the engine sounds a bit loud, but in daily driving, it stays quiet and efficient. Toyota backs the hybrid battery well, which helps long-term peace of mind.If most of your running is highway, look at the Kia Seltos diesel automatic instead - it returns strong highway mileage and feels relaxed at speed.

I am planning to buy MG ZS EV, especially now that it is being offered at a reduced price. My daily commute is around 50 km, which makes an EV seem like a suitable option for my needs. However, I am confused by reports suggesting that the ZS EV may be discontinued and replaced by a new-generation model. Given this uncertainty, would it still be a good decision to buy the MG ZS EV now, or would it be better to wait for the upcoming replacement? Could you please advise?

The MG ZS EV is still worth buying today, especially at the heavily reduced prices being offered currently. Yes, MG is working on a replacement for both the Astor and ZS EV, but that car is not around the corner. The replacement is expected only around 2027 and will be based on an all-new modular platform with newer technology and powertrain options. For your use case, that shouldn't be a deal breaker. Your daily commute is only 50km, which the ZS EV can handle effortlessly. More importantly, the current discounts significantly improve the value proposition. The money you're saving today will likely offset a large part of the depreciation hit associated with buying a model that is approaching the end of its lifecycle. The ZS EV also remains a very competent EV. It has a proven powertrain, a comfortable ride, good performance and a feature-rich cabin.

I am confused about which car to choose as I am a newcomer. Please suggest which car I should buy: MG Astor, new Duster, or Nexon. I am inclined towards the Duster.

Go for the Renault Duster if you want a simple, easy first SUV, but be clear about what you are choosing. The new 2026 Duster is very different from the older one and that slightly changes the decision. It is now a more modern, feature-loaded SUV with strong petrol engines, including the 1.3 turbo petrol with manual and dual-clutch options. This Renault car remains one of the better cars to drive in this segment and offers a comfortable ride along with an easy, confidence-inspiring feel, making it a good fit for a newcomer.Compared to it, the Tata Nexon is smaller, less spacious and not as engaging to drive. However, being from a segment below at a similar price point, it offers more premium features, which is worth keeping in mind. The MG Astor’s biggest strength is its interior quality, which feels more premium. On the downside, the engine options are not as strong as the Duster’s, and it is also smaller and narrower inside, so it does not feel as spacious.

I’m planning to buy a petrol manual SUV with a budget of around ₹15 lakh (can stretch slightly if it’s really worth it). My usage: * Weekly driving: around 80-100 km * Occasional long highway trips (500 km to my hometown) * Planning more long rides in the future Currently, my budget suits the MG Astor, but I feel the engine may not be very punchy for highway overtakes. However, I’m getting a deal for the Volkswagen Taigun at around ₹16.5 lakh on-road for the Topline 2025 model. I don’t prefer the Tata Nexon (not a fan of the design), and the Kia Sonet felt a bit small for my comfort. My priorities: * Good highway stability and safety * Comfortable long-distance driving * Decent power for overtaking * Reasonable maintenance cost * Good rear seat comfort and boot space Given my usage, should I stretch my budget for the Taigun, or is the Astor sufficient? Are there any other petrol manual options around this budget that I should consider?

The MG Astor is a decent all-rounder amongst the mid-size SUVs, but it doesn't excel in any particular area. You're right to observe that its 1.5-litre petrol engine won't feel punchy enough for highway overtakes, and moreover, it doesn't give you that confident, planted feel at high speeds. Design aside, both the Tata Nexon and the Kia Sonet will feel cramped compared to other SUVs available at this price.Given your priorities, you should definitely stretch for the Volkswagen Taigun Topline, as it seems to perfectly align with your needs. The 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine has loads of punch, the SUV feels superbly planted at highway speeds, and on top of that, it is comfortable as well.It has a 5-star Global NCAP rating, so safety shouldn't be an issue, and since it is the Topline variant, it has plenty of features. There is a facelift of the Taigun coming later this year, but the price you are getting this 2025 example is too good to ignore, so we feel you should go for it.
