MG Astor 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine axed

MG Motor has discontinued the Astor SUV’s 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine as part of a model refresh for 2025. The unit, paired with a 6-speed torque converter auto gearbox, developed 140hp and 220Nm of torque. MG offered the 1.3 turbo-petrol mill only with the Astor’s top-spec Savvy Pro variant, which retailed for Rs 18.07 lakh (ex-showroom).

Now, the SUV will only be offered with a 1.5-litre, naturally aspirated petrol engine that generates 110hp and 144Nm, mated to a 5-speed manual or an 8-step CVT auto transmission. We’ve reached out to MG for a comment on the shelving of the Astor’s 1.3 turbo-petrol unit but have yet to receive a response. However, the answer may lie in the Astor’s sluggish sales, of which the 1.3 turbo-petrol mill likely comprised a small fraction.

2025 MG Astor: what's new?

For 2025, MG has added a panoramic sunroof and six-speaker sound system to the Astor’s entry-level Sprint and Shine variants. The Select variants now get six airbags and premium ivory leatherette seats as standard. MG has also updated the i-SMART 2.0 infotainment system. The Astor still offers features such as ventilated front seats, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a wireless charging pad, a Level 2 ADAS suite, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and more.

2025 MG Astor: rivals and price

The MG Astor continues to rival popular midsize SUVs, such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. The starting price of the 2025 Astor is unchanged at Rs 9.99 lakh, but the range-topping Savvy Pro variant costs Rs 24,000 more now.
