I (55M) need a family car for long-term ownership of 10+ years. My current monthly running is 1,500-2,000km. We are a family of four with two dogs, but we will rarely travel together. My budget is Rs 10-13 lakh on-road. My priorities are low running costs and comfort. I was mostly looking at the new Brezza CNG and Nexon CNG, but I am open to diesel as well.

With a monthly running of 1,500-2,000km and a 10+ year ownership horizon, diesel might sound like a good idea, but at your budget, there aren't many options. What you will get will only be base model cars with few creature comforts. In that respect, CNG is a better VFM option as you can get mid- to high-spec variants of cars. Plus, diesel requires the added maintenance of a DPF and the cost of AdBlue top-ups, as well as more maintenance costs over time. That said, there are also compromises of CNG ownership, such as lower power and torque, and the inconvenience of refuelling. The Maruti Brezza CNG ZXi would be the best choice, as it has an efficient yet powerful enough engine, a CNG tank located under the floor, and plenty of features within your budget. The Nexon CNG would be the next best bet, offering more power and similar underfloor CNG tanks, but it is not as efficient and is more expensive, spec-for-spec.

Hello Autocar Team, I would appreciate your expert advice in choosing my second car. Please suggest the top three recommendations under Rs 12 lakh, automatic, and comfortable for a family of five. I previously owned a Fiat Punto Dynamic Diesel. I used it daily for around 70km, plus one outstation trip every month. Now I've relocated to Pune, and my running has reduced substantially to under 500km per month, with occasional trips. My requirements are: Budget: Rs 10-12 lakh on-road (slightly flexible). Type: Automatic family car, comfortable for five adults. Priorities: Value for money, low running and maintenance costs, safety, features, good boot space, reliability, and hassle-free long-term ownership. Given my reduced usage, I'm open to petrol, EV, or CNG as well. Please suggest the best options that would suit my requirements. Looking forward to your guidance.

We'd recommend stretching your budget slightly for the new Maruti Suzuki Brezza VXi Automatic.Although it's priced just above your stated budget of Rs 10-12 lakh on road, the extra spend is justified. The recently launched Brezza brings a more modern package while retaining its proven 1.5-litre petrol engine and smooth automatic gearbox. It comfortably seats five adults, offers good ride quality, generous ground clearance, a practical boot and low maintenance costs. Combined with Maruti Suzuki's extensive service network, it makes for one of the most hassle-free family cars you can own over the long term.If you prefer to stay strictly within budget, the Toyota Taisor S AMT is another sensible option. It offers Toyota's reliable ownership experience, good fuel efficiency and decent space for a small family. The Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro Automatic is also worth considering if you prioritise performance, although its boot is among the smallest in the segment.

My budget is Rs. 12 lakh (on-road). I am looking for a 5-seater petrol or CNG car with a manual transmission, good ground clearance, and a city mileage of around 16kpl. My annual usage is around 18,000km, of which 15,000km will be in the city and 3,000km on the highway. I want a car that is hassle-free to maintain for the next 10 years and will be used for daily commuting with three people seated in the rear.

We'd recommend waiting a little longer before buying. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza facelift is expected to be launched within the next few days, and given your requirements, it's likely to remain one of the strongest contenders in this segment. With a budget of Rs. 12 lakh on road, annual running of 18,000km, predominantly city driving and a plan to keep the car for 10 years, the Maruti Suzuki car is an excellent fit. It offers good ground clearance, a spacious rear seat for three passengers, low maintenance costs and Maruti Suzuki's extensive service network. The facelift is also expected to bring feature upgrades, and even if you decide on the outgoing model, the launch could lead to attractive discounts. If you're not in a hurry, we'd wait for the facelift before making a booking. It will give you the opportunity to compare the updated model, revised variants and pricing before taking a final call.

Hi, My budget is 20 lakh, and I need a SUV-type manual car with a 5-star NCAP safety rating, CNG driven and having good mileage to cover a daily distance of 40km in city traffic. Can you please suggest some good options?

Given your requirements, your best bet is the Maruti Suzuki Victoris VXI CNG. It falls well within your budget and has received 5-star crash test ratings from both Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP. It's one of the very few midsize SUVs to be available with CNG, and thanks to an under-floor dual-cylinder CNG tank layout, you don't sacrifice too much boot space and practicality as you do in most CNG cars. Being a Maruti, you can expect great mileage and low running costs as well, and its controls are light, making city driving quite effortless. The only downsides are that it is not available in a higher trim than the mid-range VXI, so you miss out on some features from the petrol car, and though power from the 1.5-litre engine is adequate when running on petrol, it will feel a bit underpowered running on CNG.If you don't mind a slightly smaller car, the Tata Nexon i-CNG is another great option within your budget. It also uses an under-floor dual-cylinder setup and has a 5-star crash test rating. However, its turbo-petrol engine is a lot punchier, whether running on petrol or CNG, and the CNG version is available in many more variants - all within your budget - going up to a well-loaded Fearless + PS Red Dark. It is, of course, not quite as spacious as the Victoris, but it comes quite close.

I am planning to sell my Mahindra XUV500 as it is nearing the end of its registration validity in Delhi NCR, and I want to buy a 5-seater SUV under ₹10 lakh. My preference is for a fuel-efficient car as my daily running is around 100 km, but it should also be spacious enough for five people. Since fuel efficiency is a priority, I am open to both CNG and diesel cars. My usage will be 70% city and 30% highway, mostly within Delhi NCR. I have narrowed my choices to the Maruti Brezza CNG, Tata Nexon CNG, Kia Sonet Diesel, and Maruti Fronx CNG. Please help me evaluate which would be the better option. I am also open to any other better option if available.

The Maruti Brezza CNG and Fronx CNG will be more fuel efficient than the Nexon iCNG, and their clutch and gearbox make them friendlier to drive, too. The Brezza is due for a facelift in the coming weeks, so you might want to wait for that to arrive. The Kia Sonet diesel will feel punchier to drive (than the CNG options listed above), while being very efficient too. Also, by opting for a diesel, you won't need to wait in long queues to refill CNG. Even the Sonet is due for a generation update, which is likely to be launched this year. The Kia Sonet price starts at Rs 7.40 lakh (ex-showroom).Another option you could consider is the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel MX2, which is more spacious than a Sonet. Its ride-handling balance is very impressive; the Sonet, however, has an edge in terms of fuel efficiency.
