We like

  • Roomy cabin

  • Easy to drive

We don't like

  • Light build

  • Not suited for highway use

The third-gen Maruti Suzuki Wagon R maintains its signature tall-boy stance while growing in size. It is 56mm longer, 125mm wider, and comes with a 35mm longer wheelbase. Yet itโ€™s lighter, with even the top-spec 1.2 ZXI AGS weighing just 845kg. It looks more substantial too, thanks to a rounded nose, sculpted sides, and stylish elements like โ€˜arrowโ€™-shaped headlamps and a blacked-out C-pillar that lends it a floating-roof look. However, lift-type door handles, the absence of alloy wheels as standard, and exposed wheel wells remind you of its budget roots.

Upright seating and generous headroom make the cabin airy and accessible. The dashboard's two-tone theme and improved textures boost its appeal, but the disjointed dash layout and flat seats leave room for improvement. Fixed front and rear headrests compromise comfort and visibility. However, the cabin is roomier now, comfortably seating three at the back with better legroom. Boot space has doubled to 341 litres, and features like 60:40 split seats and ample storage throughout the cabin make it even more practical. A lack of a smartphone slot and rubberised storage pads are minor irritants.

The Wagon Rโ€™s uprated 1.2-litre engine transforms it into a far livelier car. Compared to the previous 1.0, it accelerates briskly, with strong mid-range performance and a near-100hp/ton power-to-weight ratio. Acceleration benchmarks show vast improvementโ€”0-100kph in just 11.98 seconds. However, the engine gets noisy past 5,000rpm, and the light manual gearbox could be less rubbery and slicker. The 5-speed AMT, needs to be smoother, but if you have to have an automatic, it does the job.

Efficiency is a Wagon R hallmark. The 1.0-litre petrol delivers 24.35 km/l (MT) and 25.19 km/l (AMT), while the 1.2-litre variant manages 23.56 km/l (MT) and 24.43 km/l (AMT). The 1.0-litre S-CNG impresses further with 33.47 km/kg, making it one of the most economical hatchbacks in its class.

Thanks to a stiffer platform and wider track, the Wagon R feels more planted than before. Ride quality is noticeably more mature over rough roads, though high-speed composure is still average, and the light steering doesnโ€™t inspire confidence. That said, urban comfort and suspension refinement, what important here, are improved.

The Wagon R introduces Marutiโ€™s 7.0-inch SmartPlay Studio system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and remote operation via app. Steering-mounted controls are now included, while safety kitโ€”like rear parking sensors, ABS, and dual airbags on higher trimsโ€”is standard across the range. However, the body shell could be stronger for added crash safety and there are no rear headrests to protect passengers against whiplash.

Now more refined, powerful, and practical, the 2025 Wagon R remains a strong value proposition. It may not excite enthusiasts, but its spaciousness, fuel economy, and ease of use make it a smart budget pick. Prices start at Rs 5.54 lakh for the 1.0 LXi and Rs 5.99 lakh for the 1.2 VXi (ex-showroom, Delhi).

I am planning to buy my first car. My budget is a maximum of โ‚น7 lakh. I am thinking of Ignis, but I am also confused, as it has not received any major updates in a long time.

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis, for some reason, never really clicked as a mainstream car and isnโ€™t among Maruti-Suzukiโ€™s big sellers. The quirky styling is not to everyoneโ€™s taste, and thatโ€™s probably why it hasnโ€™t found mass appeal like the Maruti Suzuki Swift. That said, underneath it uses the same tried-and-tested 1.2-litre K-series petrol engine, so mechanically itโ€™s proven and easy to live with.
In fact, the Ignis is quite an interesting car. The part-hatch, part-compact-SUV design gives it a distinct character, and the tall stance and good ground clearance are definite advantages on bad roads. It feels compact to drive, but you sit a bit higher than in a regular hatchback, which many first-time buyers appreciate.
The reason Maruti-Suzuki hasnโ€™t updated it significantly is simple: average monthly sales of around 2,000 units are low by Maruti standards, so it doesnโ€™t justify heavy investment. The company seems content to let it continue as a niche offering. That, however, shouldnโ€™t dissuade you if you genuinely like the car. Itโ€™s reliable, relatively affordable to maintain and fits comfortably within your Rs 7 lakh on-road budget.
If you want something more mainstream and easier to resell later, you could also consider the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R or even the lower variants of the Swift, which are hugely popular. But if the Ignis appeals to you, thereโ€™s no strong reason to avoid it.

Namaste Team. I own a Wagon R VXI 2015 and now wish to upgrade. We are a family of five, and my monthly driving is not more than 600 km. I am a driving enthusiast, and my budget is โ‚น13 lakh on-road. I do not want to consider Tata. My family has been associated with Maruti Suzuki for the past 30 years, but I am open to other brands.

If you're an enthusiast and a keen driver, your best bet is the Hyundai i20. It is a much larger hatchback than your Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, which should be comfortable for your family of five, and in your budget, you should get the fully loaded N8 variant too.
It is available with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT auto gearbox, and both are a good mix of fun and ease of use. However, it has to be said that the i20 is now starting to show its age, and fun as it is to drive, you may want to look at a more modern offering.
If so, check out the Skoda Kylaq, which is even more spacious and practical, but also comes with a punchy and enthusiastic 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. It's got great dynamics and a smooth 6-speed automatic gearbox, if you want it. However, do note that it is more expensive, and you will have to settle for a mid-spec variant in your budget.

I own a Maruti Wagon R and have been driving it for the past 12 years. I prefer Maruti Suzuki or its other models. My budget is โ‚น7-8 lakhs. I require that the seat height be similar to the Wagon R. Please suggest an alternative.

If you are looking for a car that is as tall as the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, the Celerio makes for a logical next step. The Celerio is a good option to consider as it is a tall-boy hatchback like the Wagon R and offers a spacious cabin with good headroom and a high seating position.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is available with a 1.0-litre petrol engine, which is the same one used in the new Wagon R, and this engine is peppy, and the car is easy to drive in the city. It is also incredibly fuel-efficient, making this hatchback one of the most fuel-efficient petrol cars in India.
The good news is you can get a fully loaded Celerio in your budget - even with an AMT automatic, should you so desire, and its more upmarket design inside and out makes it feel like a noticeable upgrade from the Wagon R.

I use a 2020 manual Wagon R and have run it for more than 1 lakh km. Now I want to upgrade to an automatic car, but my budget is Rs 9 lakh, and the engine should be punchy.

The Skoda Kylaq would be a good option for you as it offers a peppy engine and a smooth torque converter gearbox. However, since you have a Rs 9 lakh budget, you would only be able to opt for the base variant, which is quite under-equipped.
Since you are coming from a Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, we assume you would want a few more creature comforts, thus consider the Hyundai Exter. The engine and gearbox will not feel as lively and smooth as on the Skoda, but it is fairly decent for everyday motoring, and at your budget, you would get a very well-equipped variant.

Asked by: Arupon Feb 6, 2026

Which variant of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R offers the maximum value for money?

It really comes down to what you see of 'value' in a car. For instance, if you must have a touchscreen audio system with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay connectivity, then the ZXi+ is the variant you should buy, as this is the only version that offers it.

However, on the whole, we think the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R VXi 1.0 is the best pick as the 1.0 litre engine delivers sufficient performance for general use and the VXi has virtually every feature of the 1.2 ZXi except for the steering-mounted audio controls.

I am 72 years old. My driving is limited to only about 10 km per day in the city only. My budget is about 6 lakhs. I want to purchase an automatic hatchback small petrol car fit for city driving, and easy to drive with minimal fatigue. Earlier I have never drove automatic car. Please advice which car will be suitable for me. I have little weakness in my right leg.

We would recommend you to consider the Maruti Suzuki Celerio VXI AGS, which should fall within your budget. It is a tall hatchback, with good visibility all around, a light steering, and its petrol-automatic combination is smooth and efficient. Being a Maruti, it is likely to deliver a fuss-free ownership experience.

If you can increase your budget slightly, you could consider the Maruti Wagon R, which will be even easier to enter and exit the vehicle. Being a very popular model, its resale value will be stronger than the Celerio too.

Is the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R a good car to buy, or would another equivalent vehicle be a better choice?

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is a good option to consider in the hatchback space. It is spacious, practical, and easy to drive. The 1.2-litre engine is peppy, and the AMT gearbox is smooth. It is one of the most reliable workhorses and has been running on Indian roads for years without much trouble.

It gives excellent fuel efficiency, too. Maruti has now added 6 airbags to all variants of Wagon R, adding to its safety equipment. So if you want a reliable, fuel-efficient car, the Wagon R is a good choice.

Iโ€™m planning to buy a car with a strict โ‚น8 lakh budget. Please suggest the best possible options.

It's hard to guide you to the ideal car without knowing more of your requirements. However, we have trimmed the list of options down to a few cars that excel in certain aspects.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.2 AMT - The Wagon R scores for ease of use. The high seating, large glass area and light controls put drivers at immediate ease. Superb cabin space for this size of car.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Delta MT -  A smooth engine and great ride comfort are highlights of the Baleno. Delta trim packs in a reasonable number of feel-good features.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire MT VXI - Sedan shape has its charm. Smooth engine and comfortable ride make it a good choice.

Tata Punch Pure Plus S MT - Tough feel and absorbent suspension make it feel like a junior SUV. Not as spacious as other options.

Hyundai Exter S Plus Pro Pack - Easy to drive and comfortable for city use.

Nissan Magnite N Connecta/ Renault Kiger Techno MT - Visually, the largest and offers the most space too. Decent features for the money. The engine is weak, however.

Asked by: Aakash Johrion Jan 22, 2026

What is the difference between different types of automatic transmissions (AT, AMT, CVT, TC, etc.), in terms of smoothness, driving comfort, mileage, etc?

This question is often asked, and here is an easy explanation of its advantages and what to watch out for.
AMT (Automated Manual Transmission): This is the most basic type of automatic. It is essentially a manual gearbox with an automated clutch. It is the most affordable automatic and usually delivers good fuel efficiency, often close to that of a manual. However, shifts are noticeable and can feel jerky at low speeds. You will find this gearbox in affordable cars like the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Tata Punch, and Hyundai Exter.
Torque Converter Automatic (TC / AT): This is now commonly used in many mass-market cars like the Kylaq, Sierra, and Mahindra 7XO. It is the most consistently smooth and comfortable automatic. Gear shifts are seamless, especially in slow city traffic, making it very easy to drive. Modern torque converters have improved fuel efficiency, though they still trail the others in this regard.
CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission): This is the smoothest gearbox when it comes to city driving. CVTs donโ€™t have fixed gears, which makes them very smooth in stop-start traffic. They are usually excellent for fuel efficiency, especially in the city. The downside is the โ€œrubber bandโ€ effect under hard acceleration, where engine revs rise without a matching increase in speed. Overall, they are best for relaxed city driving.
DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission): This is best suited to drivers who enjoy performance and fast shifting action. DCTs offer quick gear shifts and feel sporty on open roads. They are also quite efficient. However, in heavy traffic, they can feel hesitant or jerky if not well calibrated, and long-term maintenance costs can be higher than those of other automatics.

I am 42 years old and recently suffered a slipped disc, so I can no longer drive a manual car. I want to buy a used automatic car with a budget of โ‚น3 to โ‚น4 lakh that offers decent mileage. Please suggest.

Since your budget is limited to Rs 4 lakh, you will have to look at a used car. We suggest you look at the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R AMT. This Maruti car is a spacious and practical hatchback that is easy to drive and own. The 1.0-litre engine is peppy and efficient, and the AMT gearbox is smooth and easy to use.
You can also look at the Maruti Suzuki Celerio AMT. It is a smaller car than the Wagon R, but it is also quite practical and efficient.
