I own a Maruti Wagon R and have been driving it for the past 12 years. I prefer Maruti Suzuki or its other models. My budget is ₹7-8 lakhs. I require that the seat height be similar to the Wagon R. Please suggest an alternative.

If you are looking for a car that is as tall as the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, the Celerio makes for a logical next step. The Celerio is a good option to consider as it is a tall-boy hatchback like the Wagon R and offers a spacious cabin with good headroom and a high seating position.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is available with a 1.0-litre petrol engine, which is the same one used in the new Wagon R, and this engine is peppy, and the car is easy to drive in the city. It is also incredibly fuel-efficient, making this hatchback one of the most fuel-efficient petrol cars in India.
The good news is you can get a fully loaded Celerio in your budget - even with an AMT automatic, should you so desire, and its more upmarket design inside and out makes it feel like a noticeable upgrade from the Wagon R.

Which variant of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R offers the maximum value for money?

It really comes down to what you see of 'value' in a car. For instance, if you must have a touchscreen audio system with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay connectivity, then the ZXi+ is the variant you should buy, as this is the only version that offers it.

However, on the whole, we think the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R VXi 1.0 is the best pick as the 1.0 litre engine delivers sufficient performance for general use and the VXi has virtually every feature of the 1.2 ZXi except for the steering-mounted audio controls.

I am 72 years old. My driving is limited to only about 10 km per day in the city only. My budget is about 6 lakhs. I want to purchase an automatic hatchback small petrol car fit for city driving, and easy to drive with minimal fatigue. Earlier I have never drove automatic car. Please advice which car will be suitable for me. I have little weakness in my right leg.

We would recommend you to consider the Maruti Suzuki Celerio VXI AGS, which should fall within your budget. It is a tall hatchback, with good visibility all around, a light steering, and its petrol-automatic combination is smooth and efficient. Being a Maruti, it is likely to deliver a fuss-free ownership experience.

If you can increase your budget slightly, you could consider the Maruti Wagon R, which will be even easier to enter and exit the vehicle. Being a very popular model, its resale value will be stronger than the Celerio too.

Is the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R a good car to buy, or would another equivalent vehicle be a better choice?

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is a good option to consider in the hatchback space. It is spacious, practical, and easy to drive. The 1.2-litre engine is peppy, and the AMT gearbox is smooth. It is one of the most reliable workhorses and has been running on Indian roads for years without much trouble.

It gives excellent fuel efficiency, too. Maruti has now added 6 airbags to all variants of Wagon R, adding to its safety equipment. So if you want a reliable, fuel-efficient car, the Wagon R is a good choice.

I’m planning to buy a car with a strict ₹8 lakh budget. Please suggest the best possible options.

It's hard to guide you to the ideal car without knowing more of your requirements. However, we have trimmed the list of options down to a few cars that excel in certain aspects.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.2 AMT - The Wagon R scores for ease of use. The high seating, large glass area and light controls put drivers at immediate ease. Superb cabin space for this size of car.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Delta MT -  A smooth engine and great ride comfort are highlights of the Baleno. Delta trim packs in a reasonable number of feel-good features.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire MT VXI - Sedan shape has its charm. Smooth engine and comfortable ride make it a good choice.

Tata Punch Pure Plus S MT - Tough feel and absorbent suspension make it feel like a junior SUV. Not as spacious as other options.

Hyundai Exter S Plus Pro Pack - Easy to drive and comfortable for city use.

Nissan Magnite N Connecta/ Renault Kiger Techno MT - Visually, the largest and offers the most space too. Decent features for the money. The engine is weak, however.

What is the difference between different types of automatic transmissions (AT, AMT, CVT, TC, etc.), in terms of smoothness, driving comfort, mileage, etc?

This question is often asked, and here is an easy explanation of its advantages and what to watch out for.
AMT (Automated Manual Transmission): This is the most basic type of automatic. It is essentially a manual gearbox with an automated clutch. It is the most affordable automatic and usually delivers good fuel efficiency, often close to that of a manual. However, shifts are noticeable and can feel jerky at low speeds. You will find this gearbox in affordable cars like the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Tata Punch, and Hyundai Exter.
Torque Converter Automatic (TC / AT): This is now commonly used in many mass-market cars like the Kylaq, Sierra, and Mahindra 7XO. It is the most consistently smooth and comfortable automatic. Gear shifts are seamless, especially in slow city traffic, making it very easy to drive. Modern torque converters have improved fuel efficiency, though they still trail the others in this regard.
CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission): This is the smoothest gearbox when it comes to city driving. CVTs don’t have fixed gears, which makes them very smooth in stop-start traffic. They are usually excellent for fuel efficiency, especially in the city. The downside is the “rubber band” effect under hard acceleration, where engine revs rise without a matching increase in speed. Overall, they are best for relaxed city driving.
DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission): This is best suited to drivers who enjoy performance and fast shifting action. DCTs offer quick gear shifts and feel sporty on open roads. They are also quite efficient. However, in heavy traffic, they can feel hesitant or jerky if not well calibrated, and long-term maintenance costs can be higher than those of other automatics.

I am 42 years old and recently suffered a slipped disc, so I can no longer drive a manual car. I want to buy a used automatic car with a budget of ₹3 to ₹4 lakh that offers decent mileage. Please suggest.

Since your budget is limited to Rs 4 lakh, you will have to look at a used car. We suggest you look at the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R AMT. This Maruti car is a spacious and practical hatchback that is easy to drive and own. The 1.0-litre engine is peppy and efficient, and the AMT gearbox is smooth and easy to use.
You can also look at the Maruti Suzuki Celerio AMT. It is a smaller car than the Wagon R, but it is also quite practical and efficient.

Hi team, I am planning to buy a new car and the Wagon R CNG is on my mind. Because of travelling for the job and personal work, I am focused on mileage. The Wagon R CNG also fits my budget of ₹6.5 lakh, and I do not wish to spend more, although I can stretch my budget to ₹8 lakh. However, my family does not like the Wagon R CNG and wants me to consider the Fronx or other options. Kindly suggest.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R CNG is a practical choice. However, if your family wants a different car, you can consider the Tata Tiago CNG XT MT. It will cost less than 8 lakhs on road and will still give you the benefit of CNG, and offers more equipment than the Wagon R.

Fronx is not recommended, as in the budget, you will have to pick the base variant. It will not have many of the features which add to the convenience.

Another, more practical option is to explore the second-hand market. This opens up access to a wider range of cars within your budget. With online platforms like Spinny, etc., the pre-owned buying process is now pretty transparent than earlier.

I am looking for a car with relatively low ground clearance and a boot that can accommodate a folded wheelchair.

Since you have someone with limited mobility, we suggest you take a look at the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R with the swivel seat option. The Wagon R's height gives you a very natural entry and exit into the cabin, and the swivel seat makes this even easier. The boot should also hold a folded wheelchair in the upright position without the parcel tray in place.
The swivel seat option is currently available in 11 cities, so check with your dealer if they can arrange this for you.

I’m looking for an economical and comfortable car for city use. My daily commute is around 45km, and my budget is up to ₹7 lakh. Please suggest suitable options.

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is a good option to consider. It is spacious, comfortable, and easy to drive. The 1.0-litre petrol engine is peppy and efficient, and the car is also available with a CNG option.
The other option is the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R with the 1.2-litre petrol engine. It is good on space, comfortable for the city, and highly efficient too. The ZXi variant will fit in your Rs 7 lakh budget.
