Exterior Design And Engineering

9

The Range Rover SV sits at the pinnacle of the Range Rover family, taking the already luxurious SUV and pushing its bespoke character further. While the fundamental silhouette and stance remain classic Range Rover, the SV is distinguished by subtle yet meaningful design cues: blacked-out badges, a slightly rewritten grille pattern, a refined lower air dam and unique 22-inch wheels as standard. Optional SV exterior themes — SV Intrepid (all-black) and SV Serenity (bronze accents) — add differentiated styling not available on lesser trims.

Engineering from Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division ensures this is no mere cosmetic exercise. Built on the same advanced architecture as the standard long-wheelbase Range Rover, the SV’s structure and suspension are tuned for a blend of ultra-luxury ride and composed dynamics, despite a 5,258 mm length and 2.6-tonne mass.

Interior Space And Comfort

9

Where the SV truly justifies its flagship status is inside. The long-wheelbase cabin is vast, and rear passengers enjoy space rarely seen outside full-size limousines — in one instance, the reviewer noted his feet couldn’t reach the front seat base even when it was fully folded forward.

Standard Executive Comfort Plus rear seats include recline, memory settings, heating, cooling and massage. For those seeking the utmost in opulence, the SV Signature Suite replaces the conventional bench with divided seats, motorised aluminium cup holders and a fold-out table, creating an ambience likened to a private jet cabin.

Two exclusive interior themes — SV Intrepid and SV Serenity — offer tailored colour and material choices, including ceramic trim in place of conventional metallic accents, expanding the cabin’s customisation possibilities beyond even the Autobiography.

Performance And Refinement

8

Under the bonnet, the SV is best enjoyed with the flagship 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 sourced from BMW. In SV guise it produces around 530 hp and 750 Nm, offering effortless acceleration — a claimed 0–100 km/h in about 4.7 seconds — delivered with mature refinement rather than raw ferocity.

The emphasis here is on effortless, cultured performance. Hard acceleration produces minimal suspension squat and a smooth surge forward, but the eight-speed automatic can be hesitant at low speeds, occasionally dropping into turbo lag and causing minor hesitation before picking up pace. Braking feel is reassuring but could offer more initial bite given the mass involved.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

Fuel economy for such a heavyweight luxury SUV with a large petrol V8 is not a priority, and expectations should be modest. The focus is on refinement and effortless power delivery rather than frugality — typical for this class and performance bracket.

Ride Comfort And Handling

9

The Range Rover SV’s ride quality is impressively controlled for its sheer size and weight, thanks to sophisticated air suspension and a five-link setup. Ride compliance over undulating surfaces is excellent, and body motions are generally composed, though large 23-inch wheels can transmit sharper impacts and cause mild interior creaks on sharp edges.

Despite weighing over 2.5 tonnes, manoeuvrability is confidence-inspiring. Rear-wheel steering and well-assisted power steering make urban driving and parking surprisingly manageable, with a driving position that offers a commanding view out at all times.

Features And Safety

8

Equipment levels are ultra-rich as standard. A 13.1-inch rear entertainment system, powerful Meridian audio and a suite of convenience and tech features underline its flagship credentials. Certain high-end features like panoramic roofs or the ‘event suite’ picnic bench remain optional — even here — underscoring the extensive configurability of the SV.

Safety kit mirrors what is expected at this tier, with multiple airbags, stability systems and advanced driver aids comprehensive across variants.

Value For Money

8

At around Rs 4 crore ex-showroom before options, the Range Rover SV sits in ultra-luxury territory well above the standard Autobiography. The price premium largely buys bespoke interior luxury, extensive personalisation and the pinnacle of Range Rover refinement.

For buyers seeking the absolute apex of luxury SUV experience — with space, comfort and status befitting its price — it can be justified. For others, the Autobiography trim provides a similarly capable and luxurious SUV with far less premium, making it the more sensible choice for everyday use.

Land Rover Range Rover FAQs

The Range Rover has always been known as a capable off-roader, mainly thanks to its smart electronics, a set of punchy engines and adaptive air suspension. The latter helps make the ride quality really impressive, greatly enhancing comfort. Meanwhile, the Range Rover is available with a whole bunch of optional modern convenience-related features to further elevate its comfy and spacious cabin. A wide variety of high-end materials and optional customisation options make for tailor-made and cushy experience while you’re seated in this full-size luxury SUV.

While it weighs over 2.5 tonnes and measures over 5.2 metres in length, driving the Range Rover in the city isn’t as challenging once you get used to its size. Aiding its manoeuvrability are features like rear-wheel steering as well as a well-calibrated steering wheel. Other features such as its commanding driving position that provides excellent visibility and high-definition surround-view cameras make driving the Range Rover less of a challenge than most realise.

The BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 provides enough performance to satisfy most buyers in this segment, while offering refinement and feeling effortless despite this SUV’s mass. However, we found that the Range Rover’s 8-speed automatic gearbox can fumble slightly at low speeds, leading to the engine entering a zone of turbo lag. Considering the Range Rover’s massive weight and its resultant inertia, this hesitation from the gearbox can produce noticeable transmission stutters that can cause the suspension to become unsettled. Also, the braking performance could have been better for an SUV of this size and weight.

When powered by a twin-turbo V8 engine and with launch control engaged, the Range Rover can accelerate fast enough to belie its size. It’s also capable of going past 250kph, which makes it faster at the top end than some of its rivals.

The height-adjustable air suspension system of the Range Rover makes getting in and out of this huge SUV a relatively easy task. Once inside the four-seat version of the Range Rover, occupants can relax in the reclining seats that get memory settings, heating, cooling and massage functions along with ottomans. Features like a motorised fold-out table & cupholders, high-quality leather upholstery, soft floor carpets, a central touchscreen controller to manage various seating and climate control functions, glazed windows and high-fidelity speakers exude the feeling of luxury. The split-folding tailgate with the optional fold-out ‘event suite’ further amplifies the sense of luxury, especially if you go out on picnics often.

We are planning to buy a luxury SUV and had initially shortlisted the Mercedes-Benz GLS and the BMW X7. However, after noticing that the Porsche Cayenne is available at a similar price point, we have become quite confused about which option to choose. Could you please advise which package would be better overall?

The Rs 1.3 crore-1.4 crore segment is interesting because it offers up two very different kinds of SUVs. On one hand, the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7, which are larger and more spacious, and on the other, the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport, which, though not as practical, have more emotional appeal and arguably stronger badge value. Both have their place, and the larger X7 and GLS are not short on luxury and tech. They both offer petrol and diesel engine options, and a lot of features, and there's the advantage of both brands' wider service network around the country. Between the two, the BMW has a slight edge on space, comfort and driver enjoyment, whereas the Mercedes feels a bit more luxurious and tech-laden. If practicality is the primary focus, one of these should be your choice. However, as you're considering a Porsche Cayenne, it suggests you're okay with five seats. The Cayenne is perhaps the best driving SUV of this size, and even with the entry-level 3.0 V6 engine, it is incredibly engaging, and of course, the Porsche badge carries a lot of value. Quality is similar to what you'll find in the others, with a far greater focus on sportiness in design. Some things to note are that many of the features standard on the other cars are optional on the Cayenne and will drive up the price, and a consequence of its sporty setup is a firmer ride quality and heavier steering, which might become tiresome in everyday use. Also consider the Range Rover Sport, which delivers the best of both worlds. It's engaging to drive while being comfortable, it's got a more luxurious edge than all the rest, and it's loaded up with features too.

Hi, I’m looking to buy a new car primarily for my dad, who will be chauffeur-driven to work, but on weekends and road trips, I will drive it. I’m torn between the Lexus LM and the Range Rover HSE or Autobiography. I realize these are completely different vehicles, but neither my family nor I have been able to finalize a choice. Also, please share your insight on whether the petrol Autobiography is worth the ₹30 lakh premium.

The Lexus LM and Land Rover Range Rover HSE are completely different vehicles. The Lexus LM is a fantastic chauffeur-driven car with a pair of rear seats that resemble a first-class cabin. We can see your father being very comfortable in the back seat, which has all amenities, and getting in and out of those sliding doors will be very easy. The Range Rover doesn’t have the same lounge-like cabin, but the back seat is fantastically comfortable too. Where the Range Rover noses ahead of the LM is with its far better ride quality and the sheer class it offers. An MPV, no matter how luxurious, somehow can’t match the status and image of an SUV. And lastly, for your weekend drives and road trips, the Range Rover drives much better than the LM.
