Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Measuring just under 5m long, 2m wide and 1.8m tall, the Range Rover Sport is a large SUV. It’s not much smaller than the standard-length Range Rover, and both models share the same wheelbase. But as is evident, there’s more to the Sport than just size. The raked A- and D-pillars lend it a distinct identity, and the minimalist styling and subtle cues grab attention. 

Under the skin, the Sport is closer than ever to the full-blown Range Rover, and that’s a very good thing. Built on Land Rover’s MLA-Flex platform, it inherits significant advancements in refinement, stiffness and technology.

Much of the cabin is shared with the Range Rover, including the elegant dashboard. A higher centre console and a sportier three-spoke steering wheel do give the Sport’s cabin a distinct vibe. Up front, you get that commanding view Range Rovers are known for.

Don’t think of the Sport as a Range Rover ‘Lite’. Material quality is impressive—nearly on par with the flagship. Rear seat space is generous, with large windows and well-cushioned seats offering solid back and leg support. The bench reclines electrically but the mechanism feels more hospital bed than high-end SUV. Also, manual window shades seem out of step with the price tag.

The high-set cabin isn't the easiest to step into, though the air suspension’s Access Height function helps. Rear suspension lowering for boot access and a cavernous luggage bay add to practicality.

The P400’s 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine is smooth, refined and satisfying to rev. The 8-speed auto can be hesitant but is manageable via paddleshifters. The D350 diesel is torquey and soulful, with strong real-world performance.

The petrol’s economy is poor; the diesel is the better pick if long distances are on your agenda.

The Range Rover Sport is composed but isn’t particularly agile as it’s name might lead you to believe. What costs the Range Rover Sport points is ride comfort. The ride is choppy at low speeds on 22-inch rims. Opt for smaller wheels for a more cushy ride. Off-road, the Range Rover Sport is very capable—900mm wading depth, air suspension, and terrain modes really come together in the rough.

The Dynamic HSE trim is loaded—digital LED headlights, air suspension, soft close doors, massage seats, head-up display, a digital rear view mirror and more. The 13.7-inch digital cluster and 13.1-inch touchscreen are intuitive, and physical AC controls are a welcome touch. ADAS features like adaptive cruise and lane keep assist work reliably in Indian conditions.

Expensive, yes, but viewed as a junior Range Rover, the Sport offers impressive value. It’s not quite the sharpest of SUVs but it’s a charmer and feels undeniably special.
