We like

  • Plush interior

  • Performance

We don't like

  • Pricey

  • Not as sharp as earlier models

Where else to begin than with the grille? While BMWโ€™s bold new snouts have sparked debate, this one feels proportionate to the X5โ€™s hulking body. The new C-shaped LED DRLs replace the classic Corona Rings but look sharp in their slim housings. M Sport versions get aggressive bumpers, staggered 21-inch wheels and new 3D tail-lamps with pulse indicators.

The dashboard changes are significant for a facelift. Gone is the hooded binnacle, replaced by BMWโ€™s curved dual-screen layout โ€” a 12.3-inch cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen. Central AC vents hide behind crystal-effect trim, but their controls are fiddly. Interior quality otherwise impresses, with open-pore wood, metallic trim and plush leather, though the tech-heavy cabin does clash with these traditional materials.

The 286hp, 650Nm straight-six diesel is a rare gem. Itโ€™s punchy, rev-happy and refined, making quick overtakes easy while remaining smooth in traffic. Eco Pro mode calms its responses, but Comfort and Sport are the sweet spots. The 8-speed automatic shifts brilliantly, adapting quickly to your driving style. The engineโ€™s growl is more audible than youโ€™d expect, though never coarse.

The diesel X5 xDrive30d returns 11.98kpl on the WLTP cycle, with an 80-litre tank offering over 900km of range. Surprisingly, the petrol xDrive40i delivers a slightly better 12.04kpl on the same test cycle. Both figures are respectable for a luxury SUV of this size, especially one that combines such strong performance with all-round usability.

For a big SUV, the X5โ€™s handling is seriously impressive. In Sport mode, steering sharpens and body control tightens, making it feel agile and planted. The air suspension works hard to balance comfort and control, though the huge wheels make low-speed rides lumpy. It improves as speeds rise, where it feels composed and plush.

The already generous features list expands further. Seat ventilation, memory functions and a 360-degree camera are joined by the Drive Recorder, which can reverse the car down a saved route. M Sport variants add a heads-up display, air suspension, and a 16-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system. Eight airbags, ESC, tyre pressure monitoring and a handful of active safety aids round things off.

Priced from Rs 97.8 lakh to Rs 1.13 crore, the X5 has grown costlier but improved significantly. It still strikes the perfect balance between driving pleasure and luxury, with added tech and refinement. For most buyers, it remains the most well-rounded and desirable SUV in BMWโ€™s line-up today.

BMW X5 FAQs

The BMW X5 price in India ranges between โ‚น93.60 lakh and โ‚น1.07 crore.

The BMW X5 is available with two core 3.0-litre, six-cylinder engine options. The xDrive40i is a twin-turbo petrol engine, while the xDrive30d is a twin-turbo diesel engine. Both are paired with an 8-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox and the xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.

The current generation BMW X5 sold in India is primarily offered as a 5-seater model. In international markets, a 7-seater option (with a third row) might be available, but the standard Indian model seats five.

The BMW X5 offers a generous boot space of approximately 650 litres, which can be expanded significantly by folding down the rear seats (40:20:40 split).

Not a strong-hybrid, but the latest BMW X5 facelift in India integrates a 48V mild-hybrid technology with both the petrol and diesel engines. This system enhances efficiency and provides a small power boost during acceleration.

The acceleration is impressive for an SUV of its size. The xDrive40i (petrol) has a 0-100kph time of 5.4 seconds, while the xDrive30d (diesel) version does the 0-100kph run in 6.1 seconds.

The primary competitors for the BMW X5 in the premium luxury SUV segment include the Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, and Volvo XC90.

The X5 features a comprehensive suite of safety and assistance systems, including 360-degree cameras, Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant, and standard safety features like 6 airbags and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control).

Yes, the latest X5 facelift incorporates the BMW Curved Display, which combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display.

The X5 comes standard with 4-zone automatic climate control, ensuring tailored temperature settings for the driver, front passenger, and both rear passengers.

The current generation BMW X5 (G05 chassis) received a top 5-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests, scoring high marks for both adult and child occupant protection.

Hello Autocar India, I want to buy the most powerful diesel SUV in India. My budget is between โ‚น1 crore and โ‚น1.5 crore, with about 50 % city and 50 % highway usage. Iโ€™m confused between the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450d and the BMW X5 - which one should I choose?

Firstly, there is no Mercedes GLE 450d variant. There is a diesel 400d, but the variant you must be meaning is the Mercedes GLE 450 4MATIC petrol, which compares with the BMW X5 xDrive40i petrol

Both the Mercedes-Benz GLE450  and the BMW X5 are very closely matched in power, using 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engines with 48V mild-hybrid systems. The GLE 450 4MATIC produces 375-380hp whilst the BMW X5 xDrive40i produces a near identical 375-380hp. Top of Form

The BMW X5 has slightly higher torque at 520Nm to the GLE 450โ€™s 500Nm, which contributes to a more sporty feel.

In fact, the BMW X5 is known for a more sporty, engaging driving character, with quicker acceleration. Whilst the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 delivers power in a very linear, smooth manner, prioritising comfort and luxury.

Hi, I want to change my 8-year-old BMW X5 and pick up a Lexus RX 350 hybrid. I will be doing mostly city driving. Please advise.

Yes, considering your driving is in the city, the Lexus RX 350h is a good option. Its strong hybrid powertrain is incredibly efficient, which will bring down your running costs considerably compared to the BMW. Also, service and maintenance costs will be lower, too.

It's also very luxuriously appointed and well equipped, with a uniquely Japanese take on exterior and interior design. Do note, however, that it is slightly less spacious than the BMW X5. Especially if you intend to carry three passengers in the rear seat frequently. Though the chassis is able enough, the four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol-hybrid powertrain is nowhere near as strong or exciting as the 6-cylinder petrol and diesel engines that power the BMW X5.

I want to upgrade my car and have a budget of 1-1.5 crore. Should I go for the Range Rover Sport, BMW X5, GLE or GLS?

If you don't mind the large size on the road, go for the Mercedes Benz GLS. Apart from having the benefit of a usable set of third-row seats, its large size gives it excellent road presence. Apart from that, it's an excellent luxury vehicle, with powerful and effortless six-cylinder engines and a sumptuously appointed cabin, with loads of high-tech features.
However, in case you enjoy driving and will be driving the SUV yourself, you should go for the BMW X5.

Iโ€™m looking to buy a luxury SUV and have shortlisted the Range Rover Velar, BMW X5 and Volvo XC90. Iโ€™m also considering something from Mercedesโ€‘Benz. Which one would you suggest?

Without knowing your specific requirements, it is hard to give you a definitive pick. Of the options on your mind, the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE make for the most well-rounded luxury SUVs. They are spacious, well-equipped, comfortable and good to drive.

The Range Rover Velar is big on style but isn't as roomy as the other SUVs. The Volvo XC90's firm ride and lesser refinement mark it down.

Asked by: NIKHILESH REDDYon Oct 15, 2025

Which car is better between the Mercedes GLE 300d or the BMW X5 xLine D?

While similarly priced as the entry-level versions of their respective model ranges, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 300d and BMW X5 xDrive30d xLine take two different approaches. The Mercedes-Benz uses a less powerful 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine, while the BMW retains the 3.0-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine.
However, while the BMW sacrifices some features in this variant owing to the lesser xLine trim, the Mercedes comes in the fully loaded AMG Line trim. Thus, if you drive yourself even occasionally, the powerful 6-cylinder BMW will likely be the better choice for you, but if you're mainly chauffeur-driven, the Mercedes-Benz with its greater creature comforts and more spacious back seat is the better bet.
