We like

  • Easy to drive

  • Fuel economy

We don't like

  • Rear seat comfort not great

  • Pricier than rivals

The new Maruti Suzuki Celerio adopts a taller and more upright stance than before, giving it stronger road presence despite its compact footprint. The rounded body panels, wide grille and swept-back headlamps give it a friendly yet contemporary look. Short overhangs and a high roofline prioritise interior space, which has always been a key Celerio strength.

Built on Maruti Suzukiโ€™s lightweight Heartect platform, the Celerio benefits from improved rigidity and reduced weight. Engineering focus is clearly on efficiency, ease of driving and urban usability rather than outright performance or sporty appeal.

The cabin is a noticeable step forward. The dashboard design is simple but modern, with a layered look and better perceived quality than the outgoing model. Controls are logically laid out and easy to reach, reinforcing the Celerioโ€™s user-friendly nature.

Front seats are supportive enough for daily commuting, and the upright seating position improves visibility. Rear seat space is impressive for the segment, with good headroom and knee room for two adults. Three passengers at the back will feel tight, but that is expected at this size.

Boot space stands at 313 litres, which is generous for a compact hatchback and easily accommodates daily luggage or a weekend trip.

Power comes from Maruti Suzukiโ€™s 1.0-litre, three-cylinder K10C DualJet petrol engine, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. This engine feels eager at low speeds and suits city driving well, allowing the Celerio to keep up with traffic effortlessly.

Refinement is better than expected from a small three-cylinder motor. While the engine becomes audible when pushed hard, it remains smooth during normal driving, with minimal vibration filtering into the cabin. Highway cruising is relaxed at steady speeds.

The AMT gearbox prioritises convenience. It works smoothly in stop-start traffic but shows noticeable pauses between shifts when driven aggressively, which is typical of this type of transmission.

Fuel efficiency is the Celerioโ€™s biggest highlight. As per the Autocar India review, the manual petrol is rated at 25.24kmpl, while the AMT petrol delivers an impressive 26.68kmpl, making it the most fuel-efficient petrol car in India at the time of launch.

These figures are achieved through the lightweight platform, improved aerodynamics and the efficient DualJet engine. In real-world conditions, the car feels capable of delivering excellent economy when driven sensibly.

Ride comfort has improved over the previous generation. The suspension absorbs bumps and broken surfaces well, especially at city speeds. The car feels pliant over potholes and speed breakers, which suits urban conditions perfectly.

Steering is light and easy, making the Celerio effortless to manoeuvre in tight spaces. At higher speeds, stability is adequate but not confidence inspiring, and body movements are noticeable if pushed hard. This remains a city-focused hatchback rather than a highway cruiser.

Feature highlights include a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, steering-mounted controls and keyless entry on higher trims. The instrument cluster is digital and easy to read.

Safety equipment includes dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and seatbelt reminders as standard. The safety package meets segment expectations without offering any standout extras.

The new Celerio plays directly to its strengths. With excellent fuel efficiency, improved space, better ride comfort and easy drivability, it remains a sensible choice for city users and first-time buyers.

It does not aim to excite, but as a dependable, economical and practical hatchback, the Celerio delivers exactly what its target audience expects.

Hi Autocar Team, I am planning to buy my first car and am new to driving. I live in Chennai and will primarily use the car in city traffic on weekends (around 80% city and 20% highway). I have shortlisted the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 Automatic (top model). My maximum budget is โ‚น7 lakh (on-road). We are a family of four, all under 5'6" in height. My key requirements are: Easy drivability Decent driving dynamics Peppy performance Hassle-free ownership experience I was advised to consider a used car within this budget, but I am unsure due to the uncertainty involved, especially as I am new to car buying and have not found a satisfactory used option yet. Could you please suggest suitable alternatives to the Alto K10 within my budget? Also, should I go ahead with a new car like the Alto K10 or wait and look for a good used car instead?

You are new to driving, you want hassle-free ownership, and you are unsure about evaluating used cars. In this case, a new car gives you peace of mind, a warranty and zero uncertainty, which is far more important than getting a bigger used car. A used car can be a good value, but only if you know what to check or have a trusted source, which you currently donโ€™t.The Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 AMT is actually a very good starting point. It is compact, extremely easy to drive, has light controls and is very forgiving in traffic, which is exactly what a beginner needs. It is also very efficient and cheap to maintain, which is why it is often recommended as a first car. However, since you are a family of four and will use it on weekends too, you can do slightly better within your budget. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio AMT is the stronger recommendation. It gives you more space, a more comfortable rear seat and a slightly more stable feel on highways compared to the Alto. It is still very easy to drive, has light controls and excellent fuel efficiency, and Marutiโ€™s service network keeps ownership stress low.

I am planning to buy a car and would appreciate your guidance. My monthly salary is around โ‚น92,000, and my daily commute is taken care of by an office vehicle. I primarily plan to use the car for weekend outings and occasional trips. My wife and I are both around 6 feet tall, so good cabin space, headroom, and seating comfort are very important.

First, set your budget correctly. With a Rs 92,000 monthly salary, your safe car budget should be Rs 6-8 lakh on-road, and you should avoid stretching beyond โ‚น9 lakh. This keeps your finances comfortable and avoids unnecessary EMI pressure. The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R fits perfectly here, with on-road prices roughly starting around Rs 6 lakh and going up to about Rs 8 lakh depending on the variant. Now coming to EMI. If you take a typical loan with around Rs 1-1.5 lakh down payment, your EMI will roughly be in the โ‚น9,000-โ‚น12,000 per month range depending on tenure, variant and interest rate. That is a healthy level for your salary and leaves room for other expenses. The Maruti Celerio fits your requirements well. It is compact, easy to drive for a beginner and extremely fuel-efficient, which keeps running costs low. In fact, it is among the most efficient cars in this segment, which directly benefits your monthly expenses . It is also reliable and inexpensive to maintain, which matters most at this stage of ownership. The Wagon R is the better choice if your height and comfort are a priority. At 6 ft, you will appreciate its tall-boy design, which offers better headroom and a more upright seating position. It also feels more spacious overall, especially for daily usability. If you want a crossover or an SUV, the Tata Punch in the lower variants will fit your budget. However, it is not as spacious as the Maruti options, and choosing a lower variant means you will miss out on features. It is also not as fuel-efficient as the Celerio or the Wagon R.

I currently own a Maruti S-Cross and a Honda Brio, and I plan to replace both. My budget for a 5-seater SUV is around 15-16 lakh, and for a compact hatchback, around 6 lakh. Both cars will be used in the city, and I want petrol options that are easy to maintain and fun to drive. The SUV will occasionally be used for family trips with four people (2 adults and 2 kids). My must-have features include a rear parking camera, steering-mounted controls, automatic climate control, rear AC vents (in the SUV), and keyless entry. I really like my current cars, especially the Brio.

The Skoda Kushaq 1.0-litre turbo-petrol with the 8-speed automatic transmission is a fun-to-drive mid-size SUV that you can replace your Maruti S-Cross with. Its compact size makes it ideal for 2 adults and 2 kids, and the Classic+ variant will fall within your Rs 16 lakh budget, and it has most of the features listed, except a rear parking camera. You can also consider a Honda Elevate V CVT, which will be very easy to maintain and is fun to drive. With your Rs 6 lakh budget, though, you will only be able to get entry-level variants of the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios or mid variants of a Maruti Celerio and Tata Tiago. Between the three, the Nios has the nicest interior, while the Celerio's engine will be more efficient. Do keep in mind that neither of the three cars will be as fun to drive as your Brio. So, if your car is in good condition, you should retain it.
