If you want to buy a car under a 5 lakh budget, you basically have two choices: either buy a used hatchback from a higher segment, or a new one with a full warranty, zero prior wear, and financing, which, in some cases, is easier to arrange than most used-car loans. The trade-off is simple: “You miss out on some space and features for the peace of mind that comes with buying a new car.”
This is the most affordable end of the new-car market, and it is where many first-time buyers, second-car buyers on a tight budget and those stepping up from a two-wheeler begin their search.
The choice, however, has become quite limited. Most mainstream brands don't compete here anymore. Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, Kia, Skoda, Volkswagen, Nissan and Mahindra don't currently sell a single model priced under Rs 5 lakh. Only four brands still do: Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Renault and Citroen.

Which Car and Variants are Available Under 5 Lakh, Ex-Showroom?
This is where the budget gets tested. Six of the seven cars qualify only through their most basic variant, and the picture changes again once insurance and registration are added in Delhi.
Tiago, Wagon R, Celerio, and C3 are available under Rs 5 lakh, but once you add RTO charges, FASTag, and other variables, none of them is available.
The Alto K10 and S-Presso are the only two models to stay under Rs 5 lakh on-road, with three manual variants each.
The Kwid sits somewhere in between. Only the base Evolution 1.0 stays under Rs 5 lakh on-road. If you are planning to go for the Kwid and can stretch your budget a bit, we would advise you to opt for the Climber 1.0 variant. It is our pick of the range and costs just Rs 15,000 more than the base variant in terms of ex-showroom price.

What Should You Check Before Buying a Car Under 5 Lakh?
As per us at Autocar India, here are some of the important points that you should consider before finalising a car below Rs 5 lakh:
First is safety. Look for a BNCAP or GNCAP rating, if available. If that’s not available, look for the number of airbags that the car is equipped with. Among these seven listed above, only the Celerio (3-star), Alto K10 (2-star) and S-Presso (1-star) carry a GNCAP rating. The Tiago, Wagon R, Kwid and C3 haven't been crash-tested by any agency.
Second is fuel efficiency. If your daily driving is high, it would matter more than the sticker price.
Third is boot space. Base variants in this segment are tightly packaged. The Wagon R and C3 are noticeably roomier at the rear than the Alto K10 or S-Presso. This is something to consider if you regularly carry three adults or elderly passengers.
Fourth is the service network. Maruti Suzuki's Arena network is the widest and most established of the four brands here. Renault and Citroen have a relatively smaller dealer and service footprint, which can matter for parts availability outside big cities.
Fifth, the on-road price, not just the ex-showroom figure. This is arguably the biggest trap in this segment. Of these seven cars, only the Alto K10 and S-Presso actually stay under Rs 5 lakh (as per Delhi) once you add registration, insurance and other charges. The Tiago, Wagon R, Celerio and C3 all show an ex-showroom price under Rs 5 lakh but cross it on-road. Hence, always ask for the on-road price before you compare.
Sixth, manual versus AMT. An AMT gearbox adds real convenience in city traffic, but it usually adds enough to the price that it can push a car out of budget. The Kwid is a good example, as its base manual variant stays under Rs 5 lakh on-road, but the AMT variant doesn't.
Seventh, resale value. Entry-level hatchbacks usually depreciate faster than mid-size ones.
Point to consider:
There are no upcoming cars under 5 lakh in India.
Citroen C3 is the only SUV-style car available within this price bracket.
All other six cars under 5 lakh are hatchbacks (Tiago, Celerio, Wagon R, Kwid, Alto K 10, S-Presso).
