The lack of a fixed metal roof can lead some to believe that convertibles aren't as safe as their fixed-roof alternatives. However, modern convertible cars, especially those manufactured by internationally recognised brands, are well-designed and tested to meet stringent crash-safety norms. 

A car's roof is a major design component that helps maintain the structural integrity of the whole bodyshell. With no fixed roof, convertibles need additional bracing elements underneath the car to retain the body's structural integrity and overall crash safety. These are usually heavy-duty metal members which, along with the roof operating mechanisms, end up making a convertible heavier than a comparable fixed-roof model.
