A convertible mechanism can be adapted to various types of cars, but it is most commonly seen on two-door luxury and performance models where style and open-air driving take priority over practicality. These cars typically use either a soft-top or hard-top roof, with the folding mechanism operated manually or electrically.

Convertible cars remain a niche segment in India, although buyers now have more options than before. The line-up ranges from the compact Mini Cooper Convertible to high-performance models from Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren, while the MG Cyberster brings an electric option to the segment. There are currently 11 convertible cars on sale in India, with prices starting at around Rs 61.50 lakh and extending beyond Rs 9 crore (ex-showroom).

Most Affordable Convertible Cars In India

The entry point to the segment is below Rs 1 crore, where buyers have two very different types of convertible to choose from:

The Mini is the more accessible option, while the Cyberster offers considerably stronger performance. Moving beyond this price point brings more traditional luxury convertibles into the picture.

Convertible Cars Under Rs 2 Crore

The BMW 4 Series Convertible and Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet sit in the next price bracket, with both offering four seats and open-top driving. Their characters differ, however, with the BMW leaning towards sportier driving and the Mercedes-Benz focusing more on comfort.

The BMW M440i combines strong performance with everyday usability. Its six-cylinder engine delivers power smoothly, while the adaptive suspension allows it to switch between a comfortable cruiser and a more engaging car. The soft-top opens in 18 seconds.

The Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet is tuned more for relaxed, long-distance cruising. It gets a supple ride and a well-insulated cabin with the roof up, while its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine provides enough performance for effortless progress.

Luxury Convertible Cars In India

Beyond Rs 2 crore, the convertible market moves into luxury roadsters, grand tourers and exotic performance cars. The choices range from high-speed cruisers to mid-engined supercars.

Mercedes-Benz SL

• The Mercedes-Benz SL combines traditional roadster character with strong performance and long-distance usability.
• The AMG SL 55 gets a V8 and is positioned as the sportier version.
• The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series takes the same basic formula in a more luxurious direction.
• Its suspension and drivetrain are tuned for a softer, more relaxed driving experience, with greater emphasis on cruising and exclusivity.

Ferrari Amalfi Spider

• The Ferrari Amalfi Spider is the open-top version of the Amalfi grand tourer and retains its 2+2 seating layout.
• It gets a fabric roof that can be opened in 13.5 seconds.
• Priced at Rs 4.60 crore before options, it sits in Ferrari's front-engined GT line-up.
• Its character combines Ferrari performance with the long-distance focus of a grand tourer.

Maserati MCPura Cielo

• The Maserati MCPura Cielo is a mid-engined supercar with a retractable glass roof.
• Autocar found it surprisingly comfortable in its more relaxed setting, while the steering and handling become sharper in the more aggressive driving modes.
• Priced at Rs 5.12 crore ex-showroom, it uses a lightweight carbon-fibre structure and a V6 engine mounted behind the occupants.
• Its character becomes more focused as the driving modes are dialled up.

Supercar Convertibles In India

At the top end of the segment, convertibles bring open-air driving to some of the most performance-focused cars on sale.

The Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider pairs a naturally aspirated V12 with the ability to cover long distances comfortably. Its engine builds power progressively before delivering its full character at high revs.

The McLaren 750S Spider takes a more focused approach. It is exceptionally quick and sharp when driven hard, but Autocar found it surprisingly comfortable and easy to use on the road. Its retractable roof adds open-air appeal without significantly compromising performance.

Electric Convertible Cars In India

The MG Cyberster is currently the only fully electric convertible on sale in India. It combines a dual-motor powertrain with a 77kWh battery and all-wheel drive.

With 510hp, the Cyberster has a claimed 0-100 kph time of 3.2sec, while its battery provides an ARAI-claimed range of 580km.

The current choice is therefore largely centred on existing models, although two more open-top cars are expected to expand the segment.

Upcoming Convertible Cars In India

Two convertibles are expected to arrive in India later in 2026. Both are open-top versions of existing flagship models, but differ significantly in their approach.

Aston Martin DB12 Volante - The DB12 Volante is the open-top version of Aston Martin’s DB12 and brings the brand’s ‘super tourer’ formula to a convertible. Like the coupe, it combines strong performance with the comfort and refinement expected from a long-distance GT. Its fabric roof can be opened or closed while on the move.

Lamborghini Revuelto Roadster- The Revuelto Roadster will bring an open-top body to Lamborghini’s flagship V12 supercar. The standard Revuelto combines dramatic styling and high performance with greater usability and refinement than the Aventador it replaces. The Roadster adds open-air driving to the same formula.

While powertrain and performance separate these cars, the roof itself is another important point of difference across the segment.

Soft-Top And Hard-Top Convertible Cars

Roof designs vary across the segment, with most models using fabric roofs and others employing retractable glass or hard-roof systems.

The roof design also affects everyday usability. The additional structure needed for body rigidity and the roof mechanism can add weight and reduce boot capacity compared with a fixed-roof equivalent. These compromises become more relevant in India, where weather and road conditions can have a greater bearing on how an open-top car is used.

What To Consider Before Buying A Convertible Car In India

Open-top cars come with several practical compromises that buyers should consider:

• Weather: Heat, monsoon rain and dust can limit roof-down driving for much of the year.
• Rear-seat usability: Four-seat convertibles offer greater flexibility, but their rear seats can be better suited to occasional use.
• Boot space: The folding roof can reduce luggage capacity when stowed.
• Ground clearance: Low-slung performance cars can be difficult to use on steep ramps and poorly surfaced roads.
• Roof mechanism: Operation speed and whether the roof can be opened or closed while moving vary between models.
• Ownership costs: Insurance, tyres, servicing and replacement parts can cost considerably more than on mainstream cars.
