If strong performance is high on your priority list, we would be cautious about the Renault Duster 1.0 Techno. While we have experienced this 1.0 turbo petrol engine in the Magnite, where it feels punchy and capable, the Duster is a significantly larger and heavier SUV, so we do not expect it to feel particularly quick or effortless, especially if you are looking for a meaningful upgrade from a Kwid in outright performance.If your heart is set on the Duster, the smarter move would be to stretch slightly for the 1.3 turbo petrol, which sits only a little above your budget and will feel substantially stronger and more satisfying to drive, especially on rural roads where effortless overtaking and usable performance matter.If you are open to alternatives, the Skoda Kushaq Classic+ 1.0 TSI is a very strong option. The turbo petrol engine feels punchy, the Kushaq is genuinely nice to drive, has good rear seat space, solid build and safety credentials that you are looking for.If fuel efficiency matters more than outright performance, then the Kia Seltos 1.5 petrol HTE(O) is worth considering as well. It will not feel as punchy as the turbo petrol options, but it is the most premium feeling of the lot, more efficient in everyday use and a very sorted family SUV overall.

Since you already own a Renault, the new Duster would be a great pick. With mostly rural roads, about 10,000 km a year and a Rs 20 lakh cap, you can opt for the Duster 1.3 turbo-petrol with either the manual or the DCT, depending on your preference.The 1.3 petrol feels strong and punchy once you get past the initial turbo lag, and the DCT is almost torque-converter smooth. The manual has a satisfying clutch and shifter action, though turbo lag feels slightly more pronounced with this gearbox. It stays steady at speed and the steering gives good confidence, so it will feel like a big step up from your Kwid. Ground clearance is good and the suspension handles broken patches well, so you won’t have to slow to a crawl for every rut, yet it still feels tight and enjoyable on a twisty road.Two things to note: it is not a true off-roader, so avoid deep slush and very uneven fields; and Renault’s dealer reach in smaller towns can be limited. Since you already own one, though, that should not be a major concern.If your routes are very rough and you often need to go into fields, look at the Mahindra Scorpio N instead. It is tougher and sits higher, but it is not as nice to drive on smooth roads as the Duster.

For mostly city use and with a hard cap of Rs. 6 lakh, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio LXi (manual) fits you best. It keeps the same easy, light feel you’re used to in the Santro, so traffic and parking stay simple. Space is good for this price, with a rear seat and boot that work better than those of very small cars, so daily chores and the odd airport run won’t feel tight. And like Hyundai, Maruti has a wide service reach and low running costs, which suits someone who just wants a simple, fuss-free car.Know that the LXI is the base version, so it is quite basic inside and does not come with a music system or wheel covers, though these can be added through dealer accessories. If you want a bit more style and features at this price, the Renault Kwid is also worth a look, but first check service support in your area.Overall, for your city use and budget, the Celerio LXI lines up best with what you described.

Go for a clean Maruti Wagon R VXi manual from a trusted seller; it is the easiest first car to live with under your budget and will help you build confidence fast. The Wagon R sits a little taller, so you step in and out easily and see the road clearly, which really calms nerves when you are new. The steering is light, the clutch is easy, and the gear shifts are simple, so city drives feel stress-free. For your once-a-month highway run, it cruises calmly at normal speeds. The AC is strong, and you will find Maruti service and parts almost anywhere, which keeps running costs low even if you use the car only sometimes.One thing to be aware of is that older Wagon Rs do not have many safety features by today’s standards. So, look for a car with at least a driver's airbag and ABS if possible. Also, it can lean a bit in fast turns, so do not push it hard on the highway.If you want something newer for the same money, a Renault Kwid 1.0 manual is worth a look; it feels nice to drive and has good ground clearance, but it is narrower for four adults. Unfortunately, you don't have too many automatic options within Rs 6 lakh (on-road). Your options are Maruti Alto, Maruti S-Presso, Renault Kwid, and thanks to some on-going discounts, you could even manage to get a Celerio VXi AMT, which is the nicest and most premium option among the ones listed.
