Hello Autocar India Team, I am planning to buy a new family car with a maximum on-road budget of ₹13-14.5 lakh and would love your recommendation. My requirements include strong engine performance, good features, ample cabin space, 5-star safety, good fuel efficiency, comfortable ride quality, and solid build quality. I currently own a Renault Kwid and am looking for a car that would be a significant upgrade in every aspect, including performance, comfort, safety, and overall driving experience. My usage will be approximately 65% on rural roads and 35% in city driving, so ride comfort, ground clearance, and durability are especially important to me. I am particularly interested in the new Renault Duster Techno 1.0 variant and would like to know whether it would be a suitable choice for my needs. If not, please suggest other cars within this budget that you believe offer a better overall package. Thank you for your guidance.

Go for the Kia Seltos HTX(A) Turbo DCT as it strikes the best balance for your needs. The turbo petrol engine is punchy and enjoyable, while the DCT makes city driving far less tiring than a manual. You enjoy manuals, but with 60-70% city usage and a 7-8 year ownership horizon, the convenience of an automatic becomes hard to ignore. The Seltos also feels slightly more premium inside than the Hyundai Creta, and the HTX(A) is a well-equipped variant without pushing the budget too far. The Creta is also the older model, and the next-gen version is right around the corner. The difference in terms of stability and ride comfort between both is marginal, and the Seltos counters that with a more premium cabin and a slightly wider rear seat. The IVT is smooth but lacks the punch you are looking for, while the DCT delivers the performance you want without the fatigue of a manual. Overall, the Seltos HTX(A) Turbo DCT is the most complete package for your usage pattern and long-term ownership plans.

For your current 1,000 km monthly running, occasional 600-700 km trips and preference for a comfortable family car that still feels enjoyable to drive, the Kia Seltos 1.5 NA IVT is the better choice than the Turbo DCT. It is smoother in city traffic, more relaxed to drive and should have lower running costs over the long term. You give up some outright performance, but for predominantly city use, the NA engine is the more sensible match.The Seltos Turbo DCT is certainly more fun, but its real-world city efficiency is around 9-10kpl. If running increases substantially in the future, the fuel bill will become a bigger consideration. An electric car would bring much lower running costs, but with your relatively modest daily usage and occasional long trips, there is no compelling need to switch to an EV unless home charging is convenient and you are comfortable planning longer journeys around charging.The Seltos hybrid is worth waiting for only if there is no urgency to buy, since the hybrid is expected in 2027 and pricing and specifications are not yet confirmed.

The Mahindra XUV 7XO is a fundamentally well-engineered car with strong engines, a comfortable ride and a spacious cabin. The software glitches and sunroof leaks you see online are not widespread issues, and Mahindra has been proactive in addressing them through software updates and warranty support. The Kia Seltos is the safer, more polished choice with a more consistent ownership experience, but the XUV 7XO offers more space and stronger performance.That said, if you are the kind of buyer who will lose sleep over the occasional niggle, the Kia car mentioned above is the safer bet. But if you want the more capable and more spacious car, the XUV 7XO is the better choice.
