Maruti Suzuki Hatchback Cars in India (6)
If you are looking for a small car that is easy to drive, easy to park, and budget-friendly, Maruti Suzuki has one of the widest hatchback portfolios in India. Its six models are split across two retail networks: Arena, which offers the S-Presso, Alto K10, Celerio, Wagon R, and Swift, and Nexa, which retails the more premium Baleno. This gives buyers several options depending on their budget, space requirements, fuel preference, and driving needs.
The Maruti Suzuki hatchback cars are available with petrol engines, while factory-fitted CNG is offered across the entire range. Moreover, the automatic option is available on all 6 models, with the choice of AMT depending on the model and variants. Maruti Suzuki hatchback prices in India range from around Rs 3.50 lakh to Rs 9 lakh (ex-showroom), giving buyers options across different budgets.
Maruti Suzuki Alto K10
The Alto K10 is the smallest and most affordable-oriented hatchback in the range. Its compact dimensions and light weight make it easy to drive in congested areas. It gets a 998cc petrol engine with manual and AMT options, along with a CNG variant.
Maruti Suzuki S-Presso
The S-Presso uses the same 1.0-litre engine family but has a taller, more upright body. Its compact dimensions make it well suited to urban use, while the AMT option makes it easier to drive in stop-go traffic. A CNG version is also available.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio
The Celerio is positioned as an efficient everyday hatchback. Its 1.0-litre petrol engine is offered with a five-speed manual or AMT, while the CNG version gets a manual. Its five-seat cabin and compact dimensions make it suitable for family and city use.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
The Wagon R focuses on interior space and versatility. Its tall body makes the cabin relatively roomy, while buyers can choose between 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engines. Manual and AMT gearboxes are available, and the 1.0-litre engine can also be specified with CNG.
Maruti Suzuki Swift
The Swift sits higher in the range and combines compact dimensions with a more premium cabin and stronger feature list. Its 1.2-litre petrol engine is available with a manual or AMT, while CNG is also offered. The Swift also gets six airbags, electronic stability control, and hill-hold assist as standard.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno
The Baleno is Maruti's premium hatchback and offers more space and equipment than the smaller models. Its 1.2-litre petrol engine gets manual and AMT options, while the CNG version is manual-only. Higher variants add features such as a 9-inch touchscreen, HUD, 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, and Level 2 ADAS.

Trending Questions on Maruti Suzuki Cars - Answered by Autocar Experts
I’m a first-time car buyer. My usage will be around 40% city driving and 60% on state highways, with a monthly running of approximately 800-1,000 km. The roads are somewhat okay, with some bad stretches but mostly good roads. I’m looking for an automatic transmission. Hatchbacks, compact sedans, and compact SUVs are all fine. My budget is flexible, between Rs. 12 lakh and Rs. 14 lakh. I have shortlisted 3-4 vehicles, namely: 1. Honda Amaze ZX CVT 2. Maruti Brezza ZXi Automatic 3. Mahindra XUV 3XO AX5 Automatic Any other car recommendations are also welcome. I am currently posted in Varanasi, if that helps.
With 40 percent city and 60 percent highway use, the 3XO is the better fit among your three choices. Its turbo petrol engine has considerably stronger low- and mid-range performance than the Brezza and Amaze, which will be useful on state highways, particularly when carrying passengers and luggage. It also has a well-judged ride that copes well with broken roads. The Brezza ZXi AT would be the choice for easier ownership. Its petrol engine is smoother, and Maruti's service network is a significant advantage, while its ride quality is very good on poor roads. It is also the more relaxed choice if outright performance is not important. The Amaze ZX CVT is worth considering if you prefer a sedan. Its CVT is smooth, and the suspension is comfortable over rough city roads, while the large boot is useful for highway trips. However, its engine lacks the punch of the 3XO, particularly with a full load, and the cabin is narrower. The Skoda Kylaq 1.0 TSI AT is also worth adding to the shortlist if driving enjoyment is important. It has a well sorted chassis and a conventional automatic, making it particularly appealing for your highway heavy usage.
Hi Team, I am planning an upgrade from my Honda Amaze 2016 model to a compact SUV or a spacious hatchback with a budget not exceeding 11 lakhs. My daily usage is 55-60 kms, so monthly a 1.1k kms. Plus, I drive daily on the highway, with bumper-to-bumper traffic half the time.
With a daily 55-60 km commute that is split between highway and bumper-to-bumper traffic, your priority should be a car that is comfortable, easy to drive and fuel-efficient. At around 1,100 km a month, you are right on the threshold where fuel efficiency starts to matter, but not enough to justify the higher cost and complexity of a diesel or hybrid. A petrol engine with a smooth automatic gearbox is the sweet spot here.Given your budget of Rs 11 lakh, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno is the most sensible upgrade from your Honda Amaze. It is a spacious hatchback with a comfortable ride, a refined petrol engine and a smooth automatic gearbox that makes daily traffic far less tiring. The Baleno also offers excellent fuel efficiency, low maintenance costs and Maruti's unmatched service network, which is important for long-term ownership. The AMT gearbox works well in the city and takes the sting off your left foot in traffic. If you are set on a compact SUV, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx is the best fit within your budget. It gets a four-cylinder petrol engine that is refined and punchy and offers a higher seating position and better ground clearance, which can be useful on rough patches and speed breakers. However, you will have to settle for a lower variant compared to the Baleno.Between the two, the Baleno is the better choice for your usage. It is more spacious, more comfortable and better value for money. The Fronx only makes sense if you specifically want the SUV stance.
I am planning to buy a hatchback. We currently own a Swift ZDi AMT and an Ertiga ZXi AT. The Swift has done around 1,30,000 km, while the Ertiga has only 12,000 km on the odometer. I am based in Bangalore. I mainly use the Ertiga for my daily commute to work, which involves a lot of bumper-to-bumper traffic and finding It difficult to drive Ertiga. I drive around 1,200-1,500 km per month, mostly for my daily office commute (around 20 km) and highway driving on weekends. I am considering trading in the Swift and upgrading to a new Swift ZXi+ AMT. My main priorities are hassle-free ownership and decent mileage. Before I finalise the Swift, are there any other hatchbacks that I should consider?
Given your priorities of hassle-free ownership, decent mileage and a comfortable city driving experience, the new Maruti Suzuki Swift ZXi+ AMT is a sensible choice. The Swift is reliable, easy to drive in traffic and offers good fuel efficiency, which aligns well with your daily commute and weekend highway runs. However, since you already own an Ertiga, it is worth considering the recently-updated Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT as well. The Baleno offers a more spacious cabin, a larger boot, more features and a more premium feel, making it a better all-rounder for both city and highway use. It is also easy to drive and delivers the same reliability and efficiency. If you are open to looking beyond Maruti, the Hyundai i20 IVT is another strong contender. It offers a comfortable ride, a well-built cabin and a smoother CVT automatic gearbox, making it well-suited to Bangalore's traffic conditions.Overall, the Swift remains a solid choice, but the Baleno AMT is worth serious consideration given its additional space and comfort.
I am 65 years old and plan to buy a small hatchback. My running is low, but I make two long trips of around 250-300 km each month. Should I choose an EV or a petrol car in this segment?
For your usage, a petrol hatchback is the more sensible choice. Your running is low, and while you do two long trips a month of 250-300 km each, that is still well within the comfort zone of a petrol car. EVs make the most sense when daily running is high and predictable, and when home charging is available and used regularly. On long trips, electric cars require planning around charging stops, which can add time and complexity, especially if you are not keen on managing charging infrastructure. A petrol hatchback will give you complete flexibility on your highway trips, with no range anxiety or charging considerations. It is also easier to live with in the long term, especially at your age, where simplicity and ease of ownership matter more than fuel savings. If you are specifically looking at hatchbacks, the Maruti Suzuki Swift or Hyundai Grand i10 Nios are both excellent options, offering reliability, comfort and low running costs. If you are open to a slightly higher budget, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno or Toyota Glanza offer more space and comfort while still being easy to drive. Overall, go for a petrol hatchback and enjoy hassle-free ownership.
Hello Autocar India Team, I live in Noida, UP, and I am a first-time car buyer. My budget is around Rs. 5-9 lakh, and I am also a new driver. I am looking for an AMT hatchback that is fuel-efficient, offers good space and comfort for occasional trips, is easy to drive, and has low maintenance costs. I have shortlisted the following cars within my budget: - Maruti Suzuki Wagon R AMT - Renault Kwid AMT - Maruti Suzuki Celerio AMT - Tata Tiago AMT Which car would be the best for my requirements? Also, will E20 fuel really damage the engine or reduce the mileage of new cars? Please explain.
Go for the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.2 AMT. As a first-time buyer in Noida with a Rs 5-9 lakh budget, the Wagon R is the most sensible choice. This Maruti Suzuki car is extremely easy to drive, has a tall-boy design that gives you excellent visibility and a comfortable seating position, and offers genuinely good space for a small family. The AMT is smooth enough for city use, and Maruti’s service network and low maintenance costs make ownership hassle-free. It is also one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the segment, which keeps running costs low.The Tata Tiago AMT is the better car to drive, with a more solid feel and better ride quality, but it does not match the Wagon R for ease of ownership, service reach or fuel efficiency. The Celerio AMT is also a good option, but the Wagon R’s taller cabin, more powerful 1.2-litre engine option and better rear seat space make it the more practical choice. On E20, there is no need to worry. All new cars are engineered to handle E20 fuel, and while you may see a slight drop in fuel efficiency, it will not ruin the engine. The impact is minor and not a reason to avoid buying a new car.
