I'm planning to buy a new 7-seater manual with a budget of around Rs 18 lakh. My current preference order is: Tata Safari Petrol, Mahindra XUV 7XO, Mahindra Scorpio N, and Kia Carens Clavis. My annual running will be around 12,000km, mostly on highways, but the car may remain parked for 3-6 months at a time. I plan to keep it for at least 7-8 years. My biggest dilemma is petrol vs diesel. Petrol is my first preference because of my relatively low running and the long periods when the car will be parked, but I'm concerned about E20 ethanol-blended fuel. On the other hand, these are large and heavy vehicles, so fuel efficiency is also important. I'm considering diesel for its better mileage, but I'm worried about the long-term reliability of the DPF and DEF systems if the car remains unused for several months. What would you recommend?

Although your annual running of around 12,000km sits on the fence between petrol and diesel, your usage pattern is predominantly highway, which plays to a diesel's strengths. The concern about DPF is understandable, but it's often overstated. DPF issues are far more common in vehicles used almost exclusively for short city trips. Since your driving is mainly on highways, the system will get the opportunity to regenerate properly. As for the car remaining parked for 3-6 months, that's not ideal for either fuel type. Diesel cars require some precautions, such as keeping the tank full and using fresh DEF when the car is put back into regular use. Still, long periods of inactivity are not a reason to avoid diesel altogether.
We wouldn't let E20 fuel influence your decision either. Modern E20-compliant engines are designed to run on it, and there is no official roadmap beyond E20. While ethanol can marginally reduce fuel efficiency, it is not a reason to avoid buying a petrol car today.
Among your shortlist, we'd place the Mahindra XUV 7XO ahead of the others. It is the most rounded package, offering excellent space, comfort, safety and highway ability.

For your usage, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel is the best fit. You are doing very high mileage with long highway runs, so diesel efficiency and strong performance are the priorities. This Mahindra car is one of the most refined and powerful diesel SUVs in this price range, and it is also a very comfortable long-distance car with a spacious cabin - including a third row of seats - and a strong feature set. The Tata Harrier is also a good highway car with a strong diesel engine and a comfortable ride, but the 7XO is a more refined and better-rounded package overall. However, both these are in a higher segment, which means your budget will only get you a low- to mid-range variant. In the segment below, the Tata Sierra diesel is a newer product and looks very promising, but its diesel engine doesn't feel particularly strong considering its size and weight. The Hyundai Creta is just a facelifted version of your current car and hence won't feel as new, while the Seltos, though new and larger, uses the same engine as your Creta, and like the Sierra, doesn't feel as powerful given the SUV's size. Overall, the 7XO feels like the more premium and more complete product for your usage, but if you're not happy with the features on offer in your budget, try the Seltos instead.

Hi Autocar, I am currently using a 2019 Mahindra XUV300 diesel, and I have driven 2,50,000km so far. We are now planning to buy an EV. My daily usage would be around 100km (if I use city roads), 200km (if highway). We also go on a 3,000km road trip across South India every quarter, and once every year we drive 6,000- 7,000 km to North India. I am from Hyderabad, and I am considering the Tata Harrier EV, Tata Sierra EV and Mahindra XEV 9S. Please suggest whether an EV will really work for me. If yes, which one should I choose? If not, which car would suit my usage better? Thanks.

Given your usage pattern, an electric car is not the right choice for you. Your daily running of 100- 200 km is well within the comfort zone of modern EVs, but your quarterly 3,000km South India road trips and annual 6,000- 7,000 km North India trips are the deciding factor. While the charging infrastructure has improved significantly, long-distance EV touring in India still requires careful planning, and charging stops can add considerable time to your journey. The Harrier EV, Sierra EV and 9S are all capable EVs, but none of them can match the convenience and flexibility of a diesel SUV on long, cross-country trips.Given your experience with the XUV300 diesel and your high annual mileage, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel is the most sensible upgrade. It offers strong performance, excellent highway stability and a proven diesel powertrain that is well-suited to long-distance touring. I currently own a 2023 Tata Nexon Petrol, and my annual running is around 6,000-7,000 km. Most of the time, the car remains parked at home, and I usually start it once a week and let it idle for 5-10 minutes. I am now planning to buy a 7-seater family car. I live in a hilly region, and my budget is around Rs. 25 lakh. Given my relatively low annual running, should I opt for a hybrid or a conventional ICE (petrol/diesel) vehicle? With a car under Rs 25 lakh and low annual running costs, the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7 petrol automatic is the most sensible recommendation. The petrol engine is well suited to hill driving thanks to its punchy character, which makes steep climbs and overtaking much easier. The XUV 7XO also offers a genuinely usable third row, good ride comfort and a robust build, making it a very practical family car. With your running of 6-7,000 km a year, a hybrid or a diesel does not make financial sense, and the petrol will be much more straightforward to maintain as well. The Tata Safari is also worth considering if you prefer a more premium cabin and a slightly softer ride, but the XUV 7XO is the more complete package overall.

Go for the Toyota Innova Crysta. Your usage is highway-heavy with occasional city runs, and you want a proper 7-seater with good luggage space and a premium feel. The Crysta is still the benchmark for this kind of requirement. It is genuinely spacious in all three rows, has a large and usable boot even with all seats up, and is built for long-distance comfort and reliability. The diesel engine is strong, refined and well-suited to highway cruising, and Toyota’s ownership experience and long-term reliability are hard to beat. The Mahindra XUV 7XO is the more modern product with a more premium-looking interior and a better sound system, but it does not match the Crysta for outright space, practicality or long-term peace of mind. Given your requirements, the Hyundai Exter AMT is the best fit. As a senior citizen with city-only driving and low annual kilometres, the Exter offers the right balance of ease of use, comfort and practicality. The higher seating position makes ingress and egress easier, visibility is excellent, and the AMT gearbox is smooth enough for city traffic. The cabin is more spacious than the Swift, especially in terms of headroom and rear seat comfort, and the ride quality is better over broken roads. Compared to the Wagon R, the Exter feels more premium, better built and more refined, while still offering the same ease of use and practicality. The Swift is a good car, but its lower seating position and tighter rear seat make it less suitable for your needs. The Wagon R remains a practical choice, but the Exter is a clear step up in comfort, safety and overall ownership experience. Go for the Exter AMT, and you will have a car that is easy to live with for many years.
