Hi Experts, I have a daily running of about 80-85 km, with a mix of city and highway. I am a first-time buyer and need a reliable car with essential features and a good engine within a ₹10-12 lakh budget. I’m open to any fuel option that suits my needs. Please suggest some good options to consider. I had the Tata Altroz diesel and Kia Sonet diesel in mind.

Given your requirements, we would recommend you opt for the Kia Sonet diesel. The car will likely be more reliable, and the Kia diesel engine delivers a good mix of refinement and performance. It's also very well equipped and, with the SUV body style, will give you a better view of the road outside. Do bear in mind, though, that the rear seat space is quite limited, so we would suggest you personally check to see if this is ok with you.

I currently own a premium hatchback (Baleno) and want to upgrade to an automatic SUV, but I’m unsure which model suits me best. My priorities are strong engine performance, seating comfort and legroom, and reasonable fuel efficiency (about 12-14 km/l in Bangalore city). My budget is ₹15-20 lakh. Which reliable brands and models offer low maintenance costs while meeting these requirements?

Expecting 12-14kpl in peak Bangalore traffic from an automatic SUV is a bit optimistic, and if you really want that kind of efficiency, you will have to look at diesel alternatives.

Consider a Kia Sonet or Hyundai Venue diesel AT for its smooth transmission and refined diesel engine. The Tata Nexon diesel is efficient too, although its AMT isn't as smooth as its Korean rivals.

I am moving on from a manual Tata Nexon and have test-driven the Renault Kiger Turbo Emotion and the Kia Sonet HTK Plus iMT. The Kiger is fully loaded, looks modern and has a good feel, while the Sonet offers a sunroof, iMT useful for city driving, and stronger overall road and brand presence. I’m confused because the Sonet seems like a better car but feels outdated, and the Kiger is very cool and feature-rich but might have poorer resale or other issues. Please advise.

You're right, the Renault Kiger is a modern car which is decently equipped, but its resale value isn't as strong as some other options in this segment. The Kia Sonet feels more polished overall, and it will get you more features too.

Yes, the iMT is convenient, but try getting a proper automatic instead, which will be a far more convenient and smoother option. If you want something a bit more modern, the Hyundai Venue is also an option you must consider. The Mahindra XUV3XO is also a compact SUV you may consider.

I own a Kia Sonet iMT (Dec-2020 model) and recently started experiencing noticeable juddering while driving in 1st gear. The service centre advised me to apply more accelerator input, saying this behaviour is common in iMT vehicles. I want to understand whether this issue is genuinely common in iMT gearboxes or if it indicates an underlying problem. Since my extended warranty expires on 15 Dec 2025, I would also like to know if any specific components related to this issue should be checked or replaced under warranty. Please advise.

There can be a small amount of low-rpm shudder in first gear if you are crawling in traffic at very low speeds. But if it is constant and happens even at higher revs, then there is a problem.

There are known cases of the Kia Sonet iMT having a judder in first gear. So the dealer cannot call this normal. These juddering points to a problem with the iMT mechanism. Typically, the clutch or an actuator. It should be solved, especially since your warranty is about to expire.

Make it clear to the dealer that the issue is not because of your driving style, but it’s a genuine problem. Request a written report on your problem and ask them to flag it off with Kia. Get the complaint logged before December 15th to protect your warranty claim.

If the dealer does not cooperate, try another dealer. You can also write to [email protected], and we will then escalate the issue to the company.

I am confused between the Kia Sonet Petrol Turbo DCT and the Nissan Magnite Turbo CVT. Which one should I consider buying?

The Kia Sonet and Nissan Magnite make for nice options, and each has its own strengths. The Kia Sonet has a far more upmarket interior, more features and is more powerful too. The dual-clutch gearbox is quick but does tend to fumble in low city speeds.
The Nissan Magnite CVT is lower in price and is actually the roomier vehicle, especially in terms of rear seat comfort. Updates for 2025 have made the interior nicer, too, though it's still not quite as nice as a Sonet's. The Magnite's turbo engine and CVT gearbox work well together, making the Nissan a well-rounded package for the money.

I currently own a 2020 Tata Tiago petrol, and have driven about 100,000 km over the last five years. I’m now looking to upgrade. I expect to drive around 1,800–2,000 km per month. My budget is ₹10-12 lakh, and I’m considering switching to a diesel car. Given my usage, would you recommend switching to diesel or sticking with petrol - and which car should I upgrade to?

Considering your high annual usage, a diesel SUV would be a better choice for you. The Kia Sonet with a diesel engine would be a good upgrade for you. It has a torquey 1.5-litre diesel engine that is refined and has good punch on highways while also being efficient.

The 6-speed manual gearbox is slick to use, and within your budget, you can opt for the Kia Sonet HTK+ trim that gets a well-appointed cabin as well. Equipment like automatic climate control, reversing camera with sensors and a better quality interior and bigger boot tips the scales to the Sonet.

I’m looking to buy a new compact SUV and am conflicted between the Sonet 1.2-litre petrol and the Maruti Brezza (1.5-litre petrol). My main concern is fuel efficiency - I’ve heard the Brezza’s 1.5 is more efficient than the Sonet’s 1.2. I’m also considering the Sonet diesel manual. My monthly running is about 1,000-1,200 km, mostly on highways. Which one should I buy?

Given that your usage is relatively high and mainly on the highway, you should go for the Kia Sonet diesel MT. Its strong pulling power compared to the naturally aspirated petrol engines you have mentioned will allow for more effortless cruising and overtaking, and the fuel efficiency will be considerably better too.

You should also consider the new Hyundai Venue, as it is a bit more modern and more spacious than the Sonet. As for the fuel economy of the petrol engines, it depends on your driving style and conditions. Since your driving is mainly on the highway, the larger, more powerful 1.5-litre petrol in the Maruti Suzuki Brezza would likely be more efficient on the whole, as it would be less strained at higher speeds than the Sonet's 1.2 petrol.

Asked by: Vimalon Dec 2, 2025

My monthly usage will be about 400 km inside the city, and I will make long trips twice a year. I’m considering upgrading from my Xcent to the Venue. I need your insights to decide between the Venue HX6 1.2 litre and the HX6 DCT versions. I’m particularly concerned about the 1.0/1.2 engine’s reliability and the DCT’s maintenance requirements.

The 1.0-litre turbo petrol with the DCT has been used across several Hyundai and Kia cars, such as the Venue, i20 and the Sonet, and has proven reliable over time.

Hyundai has also improved the gearbox’s smoothness, making it a well-rounded powertrain. Compared with the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine, the turbo offers a significant performance advantage, especially on the highway, and the 1.2-litre does not offer an automatic option either.

Asked by: Shreenivas Kandukureeon Dec 2, 2025

Hi Team, I drove a Hyundai Grand i10 diesel for 10 years and, due to the unavailability of the Venue, bought a Kia Sonet Diesel HTX last month. I am 5.5 feet tall and am having difficulty with the clutch reach. I had severe calf muscle pain for a few days. I have no issues on the highway and have already covered nearly 2,000 km. I have been using a Frido seat cushion for a week, and it feels 50 per cent better with the reach. I tried various height and seat adjustments, but I am still facing clutch reach issues. I have heard from others that compact SUVs have this issue.

It would be disappointing not to find a comfortable driving position in your new Kia Sonet. While you have tried different positions, a high seat set closer to the steering wheel should give you a comfortable seating position.
An ideal seating position should keep you at a comfortable distance from the steering and put the pedals within easy reach. This is not a known issue on other compact SUVs.

I want to purchase a new car and am conflicted between the Maruti Brezza and the Sonet petrol 1.2. My main concern is fuel efficiency. I have heard that the 1.5-litre engine is more efficient than the 1.2 on the Sonet. My monthly running is around 1,000-1,200 km, and I am also considering the Sonet diesel. What should I do?

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza’s 1.5-litre engine is known to deliver good fuel economy and also offers more power and performance than the 1.2-litre unit on the Kia Sonet. The Brezza will be the better petrol option for you.
The Sonet diesel will be more efficient than the Brezza, but your running of 1000-1200km a month doesn’t justify the extra spend on a diesel. Also, modern BS6 diesels need extra care with a long drive every couple of days to help the diesel particulate filter (DPF) regenerate. Failure to do so can cause engine trouble.
We’d suggest you go for the Brezza, which will be a hassle-free option for your needs.
