To make automatic gearboxes more accessible in its variant line-up, Kia is now offering them on the Sonet’s lower trims. Prices for the Sonet diesel-automatic variants begin from Rs 9.77 lakh, while turbo-petrol-automatic variants start from Rs 9.89 lakh. Additionally, Kia has also introduced a new ‘Magma Red’ colour option with the Sonet.

  1. Automatic gearbox on the Sonet was only offered on higher-end HTX, GTX and X-Line trims
  2. Sonet now has six diesel-AT and five turbo-petrol AT variants on offer

Diesel-automatic versions now up to Rs 2.25 lakh more affordable

So far, an automatic gearbox option with the diesel was only available on the top HTX and GTX+ trims, while with the turbo-petrol engine it was available on HTX, GTX+ and X-Line trims. Now Kia has expanded the diesel-AT line-up with four new trims – HTE (O), HTK(O), HTK+ and HTK+(O) – while the turbo-petrol-AT line-up gets two new trims – HTK(O) and HTK+(O).

The arrival of the automatic gearbox on the Sonet’s lower trims has made it more affordable by around Rs 2.25 lakh and Rs 1.7 lakh with the diesel and petrol engines, respectively. It’s worth noting that the Sonet also shares its engine with the Syros and the Hyundai Venue, but an automatic gearbox is most accessible with the Sonet. Moreover, the Kia Sonet is now the most affordable compact SUV with a diesel-automatic powertrain combo.

Kia Sonet engine specifications

Three engine options on offer

Only the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and the 1.5-litre diesel engines of the Sonet offer an automatic gearbox, with the former mated with a 7-speed DCT and the latter paired to a 6-speed torque converter. The turbo-petrol engine delivers 120hp and 172Nm of torque, while the diesel produces 116hp and 250Nm of torque. There’s also a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 83hp and 115Nm of torque, but it only gets a 5-speed manual gearbox.
