I am planning to buy a car with a budget of around ₹13 lakh. I am a new driver, and my usage will be mostly in Delhi NCR with occasional highway trips. I am confused between the Skoda Kylaq Signature Plus AT and the Kia Sonet HTX DCT. I intend to keep the car for at least 10 years. Could you please suggest which would be the better choice for long-term ownership, considering reliability, ease of driving, comfort, and maintenance?

We would suggest you go ahead with the Skoda Kylaq. The Kylaq comes with a torque convertor gearbox, which is the smoothest type of autobox around, you will really appreciate this in heavy city traffic. Moreover, in city conditions, a torque convertor gearbox is also likely to give you a better and more reliable long-term service experience than a dual clutch transmission. 

The Kylaq is also newer than the Kia Sonet, and since you are keeping the car for a longer period of time, this could help retain value better. The Sonet will also be updated in about a year, so you will very soon have an older car.

I am planning to buy the Kia Sonet 1.0-litre turbo petrol HTK(O) DCT. My monthly running will be around 300 km, mostly within Delhi city. However, I have come across several videos mentioning issues with turbo engines and DCT transmissions. This has made me concerned about long-term reliability and suitability for city driving. Alternatively, I am considering the Maruti Suzuki Fronx AMT. Could you please advise whether the Sonet turbo DCT is a good choice for my usage, or if the Fronx AMT would be a better and more reliable option?

For your usage of around 300 km per month, purely in city conditions, it makes more sense to go for a simpler and more fuss-free setup rather than a turbo petrol with a DCT.

The Kia Sonet 1.0 turbo DCT is a good car. But this combination is better suited for higher usage and mixed driving, where you can actually enjoy its performance. In heavy city traffic, especially in Delhi, DCT gearboxes can feel a bit sensitive in slow crawling conditions, and with your low running, you won’t really benefit from what it offers.

In comparison, the Maruti Fronx 1.2 AMT is a simpler and more reliable option for your kind of usage. It is easier to live with in the long run, especially since your running is low and mostly in stop-go traffic. While the AMT is not as smooth as a DCT and performance is modest, it is perfectly adequate for daily city use.

Overall, for your usage, the Fronx AMT is the more practical and stress-free choice. The Sonet turbo DCT makes sense only if you specifically want better performance and are comfortable with a more complex setup.

Which of the following is the best option, considering mainly city driving, daily 30km, once-a-month highway drives, and a family of four: Skoda Kylaq, Venue, Citroen Basalt, Maruti Jimny, and Kia Sonet.

For your usage of mainly city driving (30km daily) with occasional highway trips and a family of four, we would suggest going for the Skoda Kylaq.
The Kylaq offers a comfortable ride, a spacious cabin for four adults, and the torque converter automatic is smooth, which makes it very easy to drive in city traffic. It is also compact enough, so parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces won’t be an issue. On highways, too, it feels stable and enjoyable to drive.
The Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue are good options for the city as well, but both use a DCT automatic, which is not as smooth at low speeds as a torque converter, especially in stop-and-go traffic.
The Citroen Basalt is actually great value for money and offers excellent cabin space, making it very comfortable for a family. However, it is a larger car, so it won’t be as easy to park and manoeuvre in the city. If you prioritise space and comfort over ease of driving, it is definitely worth considering.
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is not suitable for your needs. It is primarily an off-roader, has heavier steering, and is not as easy to drive in the city. The ride is also bouncy, and overall, practicality is limited for family use.

Dear Autocar Team, I am currently using a Tata Altroz XT Petrol (2022). Due to my height (6.2 feet), I am required to push the driver's seat to its maximum extent, which results in restricted visibility on the right side while driving. I am now planning to purchase a new car, and after comparing options such as Nexon, XUV 3XO, and Hyundai Venue, I have shortlisted the Kia Sonet HTK(O) Diesel (Manual), as it appears to offer good value for money. However, I have some concerns regarding rear seat space and overall driving comfort for my height. While the Kia Sonet Diesel HTK (O) is a good value-for-money car, it may not be the best choice for your height. At 6.2 feet, you will likely have to push the seat all the way back, just like in your Tata Altroz. In that position, the Sonet’s cabin can feel a bit tight, and visibility issues may still persist. Also, once the driver's seat is pushed fully back, the rear seat space becomes quite limited, which may not be ideal even for occasional use.
Instead, we would suggest looking at the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel. It offers a wider cabin and more driver space, which will make a noticeable difference for your height. Even with the seat pushed all the way back, there is still usable space in the rear, making it a more practical choice overall. The wide cabin also makes it a genuine 5-seater, unlike many compact SUVs.
The diesel engine is punchy and enjoyable to drive, and it works well for both city and highway usage. It feels strong in the mid-range, which makes overtaking easier and driving more effortless. The only real drawback is the boot space, which is on the smaller side compared to rivals, especially for larger luggage . If you frequently travel with a lot of bags, this is something you should keep in mind.

Hello Autocar Team, we are planning to buy our first car with a budget of ₹7-10 lakh. We have shortlisted the Honda Amaze and the Kia Sonet, although we understand they belong to different segments. Go for the Honda Amaze V MT; within your ₹7-10 lakh, it fits a first-time buyer best with easy driving, proven reliability, a 420‑litre boot, and your Honda preference.

Because you’re new to car ownership, the Amaze’s light controls and calm ride make daily driving simpler; its length under 4,000 mm keeps parking stress low. 

Within ₹7-10 lakh, the S MT sits mid-variant, so you don’t compromise as much on basics, whereas a Kia Sonet at this price is closer to entry-level. The 420‑litre boot is handy for luggage on trips. Honda’s typical 10,000 km/1‑year service rhythm keeps maintenance planning straightforward.

The one thing you give up is the Sonet’s taller driving position and extra ground clearance, which some prefer for rough roads and speed breakers in smaller towns.

If you prioritise a high seat and rough‑road ability over boot space and sedan comfort, consider the Kia Sonet HTK 1.2 petrol instead, within the same ₹7-10 lakh band.

On the test drive, check low‑speed clutch feel in stop‑go traffic and cabin noise at 80 km/h. Also, sit four adults and verify the 420‑litre boot swallows two 25‑inch suitcases.

Hi, I am a first-time buyer but not a new driver. I am looking for an automatic car which costs around ₹13 lakh on-road, either petrol, diesel or hybrid. The majority of my driving on weekdays will be around 10km per day, but on weekends it can go up to 40-50km. I live in Bangalore, hence I have to drive in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Which cars can I look for? I have shortlisted the Skoda Kylaq Signature+ and the Kia Sonet diesel.

With your limited running and mostly city usage, it does not really make sense to go for a diesel or hybrid. So, between your shortlisted options, we would suggest going for the Skoda Kylaq Signature+ automatic instead of the Sonet diesel.
The Skoda Kylaq is compact and easy to drive in traffic, which is important for Bangalore conditions. It also comes with a smooth torque converter automatic gearbox, which is well-suited for bumper-to-bumper driving.
On top of that, the turbo petrol engine is punchy and fun to drive, so even on weekend highway runs, you will enjoy the performance. It also offers good handling, stability and a comfortable ride, making it a well rounded package.
The Kia Sonet diesel is still a good option if your running was higher, but in your case, it does not justify going for a diesel.

I am presently driving a Kia Sonet diesel AT. My monthly driving is 1,200 km, 90% of which is in the city. I am looking to upgrade, with mostly two members travelling. Should I consider a petrol or diesel automatic car? My budget is ₹20-22 lakh.

Considering your monthly running of around 1,200 km with 90% city usage, it makes more sense to move to a petrol automatic.
In heavy city driving, petrol cars are smoother, quieter and easier to live with, and you also avoid potential issues related to diesel emission systems that typically require longer, steadier drives. Since most of your usage is in stop-and-go traffic, a petrol will simply feel more refined and stress-free on a daily basis.
For your budget of Rs 20-22 lakh, we would suggest looking at the Kia Seltos 1.5 NA petrol with IVT/CVT. The engine is very refined, and the CVT gearbox is silky smooth, which makes it ideal for city driving. It will also feel like a proper upgrade from your Kia Sonet in terms of space, comfort and overall driving experience.
If you want something similar, you can also consider the Hyundai Creta 1.5 NA petrol IVT, which shares the same engine and gearbox and offers a similar smooth and easy driving experience.

Hi Autocar Team, we are planning to buy a new car as a secondary vehicle, replacing our 2018 Ford Freestyle Petrol Titanium Plus. Our budget is around ₹16 lakh (with some flexibility). The car will be used mostly in the city, with 2-3 occupants, and we prefer a petrol automatic. We are inclined towards sub-4 metre compact SUVs due to the higher seating position. We initially considered the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, and Tata Nexon, and have currently booked the Kia Sonet GTX+ petrol DCT. However, with several new launches, we are now confused. Cars like the new Kia Seltos are appealing for their space, but within our budget only the lower variants with the naturally aspirated petrol engine are feasible. The new Renault Duster also looks promising, but there is no Renault dealership in our area. Similarly, Skoda is not an option due to the absence of a dealership. Given this situation, are we making the right decision by going ahead with the Kia Sonet GTX+ petrol DCT in 2026, or should we reconsider other options within this budget?

The Kia Sonet GTX+ 1.0-turbo DCT you’ve booked does overlap with the entry-level HTE (O) variant of the Seltos. The Seltos comes quite well equipped for a base model, with features like a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with wireless connectivity, cruise control and even paddle shifters for the IVT. However, you will miss out on several features compared to the Sonet GTX+, such as ADAS, Bose audio and ventilated front seats. If features are important to you, then stick with the Sonet; otherwise, the Seltos is a good choice.

The Seltos is the newer car, while the Sonet is now due for a refresh. Ride quality and cabin space will also be far better in the Seltos. Since it will mostly be driven in the city, the naturally aspirated engine is more than adequate in terms of performance, and the IVT offers a seamless experience. Do a test drive of the Seltos before you decide.

Hi, I’m planning to buy an SUV with a budget of around ₹15-16 lakh, and I would really appreciate your advice on which car would be the best choice for my requirements. Most of my driving will be in Delhi NCR, primarily commuting between Delhi, Noida, and Gurgaon for work. I enjoy driving and prefer a car that offers good performance and driving feel, but at the same time, my top priorities are features, comfort, safety and an overall premium experience. Currently, the cars I am considering are: Kia Seltos, Kia Sonet, Hyundai Creta, and Hyundai Venue. However, I’m also open to other SUVs if they provide better features, safety, driving experience and comfort within my budget. For example, cars in this segment often offer features like large infotainment screens, ADAS safety tech, sunroofs and premium interiors, depending on the variant. My key priorities (in order) are: maximum features and technology, comfort and premium cabin feel, safety, and good driving experience and performance. Could you please suggest which SUV would be the best option for my usage and budget, and which variant/engine option would make the most sense?

Since your number one priority is maximum features and technology, it's best for you to opt for a compact SUV, as you will only get a low to mid-spec variant of a midsize SUV within your budget, which will miss out on many of the features you're looking for.
While both the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet are good options, we would pick the Venue as it is the newer vehicle with more advanced tech. Built on a newer 'K1 enhanced' platform, it's got Hyundai's latest E&E architecture based around an advanced NVIDIA chipset, which allows for smoother graphics and faster operation on its new dual-screen interface. It's also got a more spacious cabin than the Sonet and a more comfortable ride quality.
While the new Hyundai Venue hasn't yet received a safety rating from the likes of Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP, it is believed to be engineered for a high rating, and its platform sibling, the Kia Syros, scored 5 stars at Bharat NCAP.
As for powertrain choice, we would recommend the 1.0 Turbo Petrol DCT. It offers strong performance and a good driving experience. Although the diesel is smoother, it's not as exciting, and costs roughly Rs 1.5 lakh more. Do note, however, if you want the fully loaded HX10 or N10 variant, you will have to increase your budget slightly.

I am thinking of buying the Sonet HTK Optional DCT turbo petrol, which is around ₹12 lakh, and at the same time, the Venue HX5 turbo DCT petrol is coming at ₹13.5 lakh on-road in Bangalore. Which should I pick? Second, are heating issues still a thing to consider in both these DCT models?

Between the two, we would suggest going for the Kia Sonet HTK (O) DCT. The Sonet and the Venue share the same 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine paired with the DCT gearbox, so performance and the overall driving experience will be very similar. In terms of equipment as well, both these variants are quite similarly equipped, but the Sonet is around Rs 1.5 lakh cheaper, which makes it an excellent value for money.
That said, the Hyundai Venue is the newer car and offers slightly better rear seat space. So if rear seat comfort is an important factor for you, that is something to keep in mind.
On the topic of DCT overheating, it can happen in very heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic where the car is constantly crawling forward. However, this gearbox has been around for quite some time and has seen improvements over the years. In normal usage, it is not a major concern, and there are safety systems built in to alert you if the gearbox temperature rises too much.
