Autocar score

We like

  • Exceptionally comfortable

  • Strong performance (turbo)

We don't like

  • Limited network

  • Cost cutting visible

The Citroen C3 sits several segments below the C5 Aircross but carries the same quirky French charm. The chrome grille flows into LED DRLs, with the headlamps beside it. A hexagonal air dam, faux scuff plate and neat touches like the Citroen logo inside the lamps add character.
Various packs, editions and colours give myriad combinations. Sculpted panels, a cut-out tailgate and upright stance give it a crossover look, while elements like lift-type handles remind you itโ€™s still budget territory. The 180mm ground clearance and SUV-like shape only add to the confusion about its positioning.

Inside, the C3 is unconventional but cleverly executed. Textured dash trim, chunky knobs and funky AC vents add flair. The orange dash is optional, paired with either anodised grey or brushed-metal accents. Plastics feel decent up top, but some cheap bits are visible lower down.
The front seats are slim but generously cushioned, with a tall driving position. The back seat is roomy with good leg- and headroom, though tight for three. Thereโ€™s no rear armrest or adjustable headrests, but two USB ports are provided. The 315-litre boot is practical, though lifting bags over the tall lip isnโ€™t ideal, and the single-piece rear backrest is awkward to fold.

Two petrol engines are offered โ€” an 82hp NA and a 110hp turbo, the latter getting a 6-speed AT option. The turbo is eager, with a punchy mid-range and slick 6-speed manual, though it strains at high revs. The NA feels adequate for city use, paired with a notchy 5-speed โ€™box. Both are decently refined, and the AC performs impressively even without rear vents.

Both engines deliver 19.3kpl ARAI mileage with the manual gearbox, with the turbo-auto at 18.3kpl. Expect real-world figures to be lower, especially for the turbo if driven hard.

Ride quality is a highlight. The long wheelbase, wide track and chunky tyres deliver a smooth, absorbent ride over rough roads. High-speed stability is excellent, steering feels direct and handling is tidy, with predictable body roll and no flex or rattles.

The 10-inch touchscreen is a highlight, with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The digital instrument cluster on higher trims offers a good amount of info. The four-speaker audio system is surprisingly punchy. While the base trim is very bare-bones, higher trims now include auto climate control, rear-view camera and six airbags.

The C3 blends funky styling, a spacious cabin and brilliant ride comfort but cuts corners in obvious areas. Still, its ride, handling and turbo performance outclass most rivals. Priced โ‚น6.23โ€“10.19 lakh (ex-showroom), it sits between hatchbacks and compact SUVs โ€” a unique choice for buyers prioritising driving feel and comfort.

As a first-time buyer with usage of around 400 km per month, mostly on bumpy hill roads, and a budget of around โ‚น10 lakh (could extend some), what could be the best car? (Open to any brand.)

A robust suspension and punchy power are elements we'd recommend you give weightage to. Our shortlist of models suited to your needs includes the following:
1) Skoda Kylaq: Tough build, punchy engine, fun handling. Rear seat space isnโ€™t ideal for three passengers.
2) Mahindra XUV 3XO: Tough build, suspension comfort, strong engines, roomy interior. Boot isn't the largest.
3) Tata Punch Turbo:  Small dimensions make it suited to hills, and ample power from the turbo engine. Smallest for rear seat passengers
4) Citroen C3 Turbo: Great engine, good ride comfort. Feels a bit basic, dealer network isn't the largest.

My daily driving is around 20 km in a small city and nearby villages, and my budget is Rs 12-14 lakh. I prefer a car with a powerful engine. Which car would you recommend?

There are a couple of options that you can consider. We've listed the highlights for each.

1) Skoda Kylaq: Punchy engine, fun handling. Rear seat space is tight, though

2) Mahindra XUV 3XO petrol: Strong engine, good ride comfort. Boot space is limited

3) Maruti Suzuki Fronx Turbo/ Toyota Taisor Turbo: Strong engine. Reliability and hassle-free ownership experience

4) Citroen C3: Strong engine. Feels a bit basic, and the service network isn't very large.

Hi Autocar Team, I am a first-time car buyer and am considering the Citroen C3. My daily running is less than 50 km and I will use the car for both daily driving and occasional long trips. However, I am confused between the Citroen C3 and the Nissan Magnite and am also unsure about the Citroen brand in India. Is Citroen a reliable brand, and how does the C3 perform in terms of maintenance and mileage? Which car would you recommend?

As a first-time buyer, itโ€™s good that youโ€™re looking at both sides carefully.

The Citroen C3 is a solid and very likeable car. Its biggest strength is ride comfort, it handles bad roads better than most cars in this segment and feels mature for its size. The 1.2-litre turbo petrol, in particular, is a gem. Itโ€™s strong, smooth and easily one of the nicest small-capacity turbo-petrol engines around today. If you enjoy driving and want something that feels a bit different from the usual crowd, the C3 stands out. For your daily run of under 50km and occasional long drives, it will be perfectly comfortable. Mileage is reasonable, especially with the naturally aspirated engine, though the turbo will be slightly lower.

The Nissan Magnite has other strengths. It has better road presence with its SUV styling, a more practical cabin, a bigger boot and a feature list that feels more complete. Nissan, as a brand, has built a reputation for reliability, and its dealership and service network is currently more established than Citroenโ€™s in most cities. That adds peace of mind, especially for a first-time buyer.

So if you like to drive and value comfort and engine performance, the C3 is the more enjoyable car. But if you want a safer, more practical and lower-risk ownership experience, the Magnite is the wiser choice.

Hello sir, I want to buy the Tata Punch facelift turbo 1.2-litre car for pure city driving in Pune. My monthly running is 500km. There may be occasional highway drives. Please suggest whether it is the right choice or if I should go with the NA engine or some other car in the Rs 10 lakh budget. Thank you.

Yes, the Tata Punch turbo is a good choice for you, given the nature of your usage. The advantage is that it can still be easy, and even quite fuel efficient if driven carefully, when driving around town, while also being strong enough for your occasional highway drives or hilly regions. This can not be said of the naturally aspirated engine.
Perhaps the only downsides are that the 6-speed manual gearbox can feel notchy, clutch modulation is not easy to do smoothly, and it is not very refined. Also, you will not get the top-spec variant within your Rs 10 lakh budget.
Keeping that in mind, you should also consider the Citroen C3 1.2 Turbo. It has a much smoother and punchier engine, and the gearbox is slicker too. It may miss out on some features that the Punch gets, but it is also more affordable overall. Its biggest advantage is that, if you are willing to spend a little more, you can get this engine with a smooth 6-speed automatic gearbox, which will be a huge boon around town.

I am looking for a compact and safe car with an automatic transmission that can easily navigate ghats. My budget is around โ‚น10-12 lakh. My family car was a Swift, and its dimensions worked well for my parking spot.

The Citroen C3 Turbo-AT is an excellent crossover hatchback that's compact in dimensions, packs in strong performance, and it'll easily fall within your budget. But go for it, only if there is a Citroen touchpoint near you.

The Nissan Magnite Turbo-CVT/Renault Kiger Turbo-CVT are also good, value-for-money options. And even though both these are slightly larger than the Swift, they are narrower than other turbo-automatic compact SUVs available at this price. It makes them relatively easier to navigate.

I want to buy a new car with a maximum budget of โ‚น7 lakh. Which option should I go for: Tata Altroz, Maruti Baleno, or Citroen C3? My priorities are good drive quality, mostly city use, reliability, and low maintenance. If I choose Baleno or Glanza, which is the most value-for-money variant?

All three options on your shortlist are nice to drive in their own ways. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is very comfortable at city speeds with excellent bump absorption and a peppy engine. Tata's Altroz feels the toughest of the three cars and drives with a big car feel out on the highway. The Citroen C3 has a nice engine, and it also balances ride and comfort very well.

However, for reliability and ease of service, the Baleno is your best bet. The Baleno is known to be a trouble-free car, and Maruti's vast network means you are never far from a service centre. Service costs are also competitive.

The Toyota Glanza is essentially a rebadged version of the Baleno, but does cost more for similarly-specced variants. We'd recommend sticking to the Baleno. Within Rs 7 lakh, you'll get the Sigma variant, though we'd recommend upping your budget a bit (and bargaining hard with your dealer!) to get the higher-spec Delta trim.

It packs in extras such as a powered mirror adjust as well as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that would add greatly to your experience.

I have a Kia Syros diesel manual and am planning to buy a second car with a budget of โ‚น12 lakh. Please suggest a car that offers good handling, is easy to drive, and is compact in size.

Check out the Citroen C3 X, which is one of the most dynamically sorted cars at its price, and quite underrated too. Typical of French cars, the suspension setup is superbly tuned for a mix of exceptional comfort and sharp handling, and it also features a communicative steering system for a car in this class. Combine that with a punchy and smooth 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, and you have a car that's a lot of fun to drive.
With the recent C3 X update, it now gets the features it was missing previously, but you can still get a fully-loaded model - with a smooth 6-speed AT gearbox, if you like - in your budget of Rs 12 lakh.
You could also consider the Skoda Kylaq, which is a bit more spacious, but in your budget, you will only get a mid-spec model.

Hi, Iโ€™m looking to buy my first car with an on-road budget of around โ‚น10 lakh in Chennai. I average about 500 km per month and also do trips to Coimbatore 3-4 times a year and occasional long drives, so comfort, features, reliability, and low maintenance are important. Iโ€™m considering the C3X Shine, 3XO, Baleno, Glanza, and Fronx, but Iโ€™m open to other suggestions that fit my usage and budget - please recommend the best choice.

We would lean towards the Citroen C3X Shine with the 1.2 turbo engine and six-speed AT. It's a little above your budget but will suit your needs best as it is extremely comfortable, has a superb suspension and the best powertrain for the price.

For highway driving, it is the best of all the options you have shortlisted because of the brilliant engine and dynamics. However, we have added that Citroenโ€™s dealer network is not the best, and hence, after-sales service could be a worry.

If you want to play safe, go for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, it's well equipped, reliable and comes with low-cost maintenance. Itโ€™s just that for your budget, you will get the 1.2 petrol mated to an AMT, which is nowhere near as nice to drive as the C3X.

Please suggest which car to buy between the Renault Kiger Automatic and the Nissan Magnite Automatic. My budget is โ‚น11-12 lakh. Alternatively, you can suggest other options. My preference is automatic only.

The Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger share their turbo-petrol CVT (automatic), which is a smooth yet powerful powertrain option.

Both cars have been refreshed recently with quite a few upmarket touches. Between the two, the Magnite looks a bit more SUVish and has slightly better cabin ergonomics.

If you have a Citroen touchpoint nearby, you must check out the C3 Turbo AT. It is a much better car at a more affordable price tag.
