Please suggest which car to buy between the Renault Kiger Automatic and the Nissan Magnite Automatic. My budget is ₹11-12 lakh. Alternatively, you can suggest other options. My preference is automatic only.

The Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger share their turbo-petrol CVT (automatic), which is a smooth yet powerful powertrain option.

Both cars have been refreshed recently with quite a few upmarket touches. Between the two, the Magnite looks a bit more SUVish and has slightly better cabin ergonomics.

If you have a Citroen touchpoint nearby, you must check out the C3 Turbo AT. It is a much better car at a more affordable price tag.

Hi all, I’m planning to buy a new car and want an automatic that can comfortably seat 5 adults. I have currently booked the Kia Syros HTX Plus, but I’m concerned about the DCT gearbox heating issues in city traffic like Bangalore. I tried other cars, but they lacked features and seating space; I also considered the 3XO, but found the boot space too small. If I drive the DCT in ECO mode, will that help in city driving, or should I consider other options? Please help.

Your choice of the Kia Syros is good, as there is ample rear room for 5 adults, as well as a decent boot. About your query on the DCT overheating issue, yes, in general, DCT's tend to be a bit jerky in low-speed traffic, and they can overheat. However, the Kia unit is generally reliable, with fewer owner complaints reported. Driving in Eco mode isn't going to make much of a difference, but it can help a bit, as with a milder engine map. Thus, less torque there could be less clutch slippage. With a reduced kickdown tendency, you will have fewer rapid downshifts, thus fewer clutch engagements. If you are very concerned by this, you could look at the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Rear space as well as boot space is good, and the Brezza comes with a torque convertor automatic gearbox. It is the smoothest type to have and will not have issues with start-stop traffic.

I want to buy a new 7-seater SUV. My daily running is low, with a mix of city and occasional highway trips. It should have all the latest features and good value for money. My budget is around ₹25-30 lakh. Should I go for the Mahindra XUV700 (9-seater), Hyundai Alcazar, the newly launched Mahindra 7XO, or any other upcoming car? I can wait for a year.

Unlike the Hyundai Alcazar and the Mahindra XUV 7XO, the Mahindra XEV 9S is an EV. Thus, we would only suggest this if you have access to charging at home or your place of work. Also, if your highway drives are not very long. If you have to cover distances over 400 kms and if there are many ghats, you will need to stop to charge, and highway charging is not perfectly reliable as yet. Between the Alcazar and the 7XO, the Mahindra would pip the Hyundai in terms of engine performance, ride and handling and would offer you some more features too.

I want to buy a new car as a first-time buyer with a budget under ₹10 lakh and plan to buy an automatic. My preference is the Honda Amaze CVT version, but I need help deciding if it is a good long-term car with a good running average.

The Honda Amaze is a good compact sedan, and the CVT is a good automatic gearbox. If you do push a bit further with the pace, then there is that typical rubber band effect where the revs rise before a corresponding increase in speed. However, on the whole, this is still better than the jerky shifts that AMTs have. In terms of long term usage, yes, the Amaze is a very reliable car and should serve you well. As for the mileage, the Amaze will not be as efficient as the Maruti Dzire, but it is still very good. In our standard test cycle, the CVT Amaze mileage is 9.94kpl in the city cycle and 16.62kpl on the highway loop.
