Hi Autocar team, please suggest an EV for elderly parents. Usage will mostly be in the city, with occasional highway trips of 200 to 250 km. Budget is approximately ₹10 to 17 lakh.

Choose the Tata Punch EV Empowered 40. For elderly parents’ city use and occasional highway trips, it combines easy ingress, a comfortable ride and a decent real-world range.
Since most drives are in the city, the 40kWh battery should deliver around 280-300km of range, which means charging once a week is feasible. Highway use will see this drop, but a 200–250km run on a single charge is still achievable. The tall seating position and wide-opening doors make ingress and egress easier for elderly occupants, while the compact footprint and good visibility make it easy to drive and park. Ride quality is also superb, and high-speed stability is reassuring.
The one trade-off is rear seat space for three passengers. It is possible to sit three abreast, but the narrow width means it can feel a bit cramped. For slightly more range and a more spacious rear seat, consider the Tata Nexon EV Empowered 45.
On the test drive, have your parents check ease of entry, seat height, brake feel and the regen modes. Plus, take note of battery consumption based on their driving style.

Planning to purchase a new automatic car for my wife, who is currently learning to drive. The primary usage will be daily commuting from home to office in Bengaluru city traffic, with occasional highway drives once every couple of months. We are looking for a compact car, as we already own a Kia Seltos Diesel. We are open to considering electric or hybrid options, provided they fit within a budget of ₹14 lakhs (ex-showroom). The purchase will be made under her company’s employee car loan scheme. Her key priorities are safety, ease of driving, comfort, and reliable service support. Which models would you recommend?

Since you're open to electric cars, consider the top-spec Tata Punch EV Empowered+ S 40. Thanks to its compact dimensions, elevated seating, good visibility and light steering, it will be very easy to drive in the city. Additionally, its powertrain is far smoother, seamless and more refined than any ICE vehicle. Also, the Punch EV is equipped with all the safety kit, and it has also been awarded 5 stars by Bharat NCAP for its crash safety.
If you want ICE options, you can test drive the Hyundai Venue 1.0 turbo-petrol DCT and Skoda Kylaq 1.0 turbo-petrol AT.

Hi Autocar Team, my daily running is around 40 km, mostly in the city. I am confused about whether I should choose a petrol car or an electric vehicle. I have shortlisted the Honda Amaze and the Tata Punch EV. Could you please suggest which option would be better suited for my usage?

Since your driving is within the city and on the higher side, opt for the electric Tata Punch. The smooth EV drive and compact dimensions is something you will appreciate in the city. Also, the higher seating helps with visibility in tight lanes. Since you drive about 40kms per day, you can opt for the smaller battery '30' model, but if your budget allows, opt for the larger '40' model.

With its real-world range of about 300 kms, you'll have fewer charges per week. Speaking of which, opt for the EV only if you have the ability to charge at home or your place of work, as relying on public chargers is not convenient.

The one thing you give up is quick refuelling if you plan long trips; even with fast charging, you’ll need to plan stops. Thus, if you do frequent long drives, consider the Honda Amaze CVT instead, which offers easy refuelling and a relaxed automatic for traffic.

Hi, what is the best EV car for daily city rides of more than 80km?

The recently facelifted Tata Punch EV is a great choice for a city car. With the larger 40kWh battery pack, Tata claims a real-world range of about 335-355km according to its C75 rating, figures which, the carmaker says, 75% of customers can expect based on analysis of historical driving data from its existing EV users.
We are yet to verify these claims, but our road test of the previous 35kWh long-range Punch EV yielded a combined range of 229km, which we expect this facelift to improve upon significantly.

Hello Experts, I’m looking for an automatic car up to ₹12 lakh for a newly licensed driver. 80% of the driving will be in the city. Will an electric car make sense? There is a charging facility available. Long drives will be 350 km, one way. Please suggest a petrol automatic, or electric. Brand is not an issue.

Since your usage is 80% city driving and you have access to charging, an EV like the Tata Punch EV 40 kWh does make a lot of sense. Electric cars are very easy to drive, especially for a new driver. There are no gear shifts, power delivery is smooth and instant, and driving in traffic is extremely stress-free.
Although we haven’t tested it yet, we expect the Punch EV facelift to deliver over 300 km per charge, which is more than enough for your daily usage. Charging at home or office will easily cover your routine driving, and running costs will be significantly lower than a petrol car. For your occasional 350 km highway trip, you will need to stop once for a quick charge, so some planning will be required.
If you prefer to avoid the hassle of charging, you can also consider the Skoda Kylaq automatic. It comes with a smooth torque converter transmission, is easy to drive in the city, and will be more convenient for your longer highway trips.

I am confused between the Tata Punch EV, Toyota Ebella, and Hyundai Creta EV. I am not very sure about Ebella, as there is no clear timeline yet for its launch or delivery. Is the Creta EV a good option, or should I consider the Punch EV instead? Or would it be better to wait for the Ebella?

The Hyundai Creta Electric is the best model from your shortlist. It's got a very refined powertrain and delivers a good range (LR variant). It also feels the best-rounded thanks to its cabin being roomier than the Tata Punch EV's and Toyota Ebella's.

The Tata Punch EV is impressive, but it is essentially two sizes smaller than the Hyundai Creta Electric. Correspondingly, it won't be as well-suited to family use as the Creta.

Toyota's Ebella doesn't quite hit the spot. It's not particularly practical for its size, and the stiff ride quality also marks it down. The Toyota should be keenly priced when it goes on sale in the days to come.

I am looking for an EV as my daily travel is around 75 km. I have a 3.3kW charging facility free at my office, plus a fast DC charger nearby. My budget is flexible as I am exploring the new Tata Punch EV, Nexon EV and Curvv EV, considering the ₹3.5 lakh discount on the Curvv EV. What should be the logical choice, considering I don’t have much experience in driving, hardly, for 4-5 months as of now?

Among the options you mentioned, the Tata Punch EV Long Range is the most logical choice. It is compact, easy to manoeuvre and park, and its smooth electric power delivery makes city driving very simple for someone with limited driving experience. With your daily running and office charging facility, range should never be a concern. The new car is also very well-priced and a great value for money, thanks to the price cut compared to the older car.
The Tata Nexon EV is a good step up if you want more space and a slightly more premium feel. It offers a bigger cabin and boot, which can be useful if you regularly travel with family.
The Tata Curvv EV becomes attractive because of the ₹3.5 lakh discount, but it is a larger car and may feel slightly intimidating to drive initially.

I am planning to buy an electric car for mixed usage, including city driving, highway trips, and occasional hill drives. I have shortlisted the Tata Punch EV, Tata Nexon EV, and MG Windsor EV, but I am confused about which one would be the best choice. My key considerations are real-world driving range, highway performance, hill driving capability, and overall value for money. Could you please suggest which EV among these would suit my needs best and which variant I should choose?

Since your usage is a mix of city and highway driving, with occasional trips to the hills, it would be advisable to opt for the largest battery pack available. Among your chosen options, the standard MG Windsor has the smallest battery at 38kWh, the updated Tata Punch EV can be had with a 40kWh battery, and the Tata Nexon EV gets a 45kWh unit. MG has also introduced the Windsor Pro with a 52.9kWh battery pack, but it comes at a premium of almost Rs 2 lakh over the standard Windsor.

If you are willing to stretch your budget, the Windsor Pro will offer the longest real-world range of the three. In our testing, the standard 38kWh Windsor managed a combined real-world range of 308km, with an efficiency of 8.1km/kWh. With a significantly larger battery, the Windsor Pro should be able to deliver around 400km in real-world conditions.

Naturally, the range will drop when climbing hills, but you will be able to recoup some energy on the way down using the regen modes. If you are on a tighter budget, then the Nexon EV with the 45kWh battery is a good choice too. In our testing, it delivered an efficiency of 7.79km/kWh and a real-world range of around 350km.

I want to buy a sub-4 meter compact SUV. My daily travel is 110km. Should I buy EV, CNG or diesel? Which car should I buy for a budget of ₹13 lakh?

For your 110km commute, an electric car only makes sense if you can charge it at home overnight. In your budget, the Tata Punch EV with the 40kWh battery pack is a good pick and should deliver a real-world range of over 250km. This means you will likely need to charge it every two days. With the optional 7.2kW wallbox charger, you should be able to charge from 10% to 100% in around six hours.
However, if home charging is not an option, then a diesel or CNG car makes more sense. Among the available options, the new Punch CNG and the Hyundai Venue diesel stand out. The top-of-the-line Punch CNG Accomplished + S with the AMT is within your budget and comes well equipped, along with a usable boot thanks to the twin CNG tanks.
If you prefer diesel power, then the HX5 variant of the Venue diesel is within your budget. While it is not as well-equipped as the Punch, it is the physically larger vehicle with a roomier interior, and the diesel engine offers much better performance. However, if you want an automatic, you will need to stretch your budget to around Rs 14 lakh.
Test drive all of these vehicles before making your final decision.

I currently have 2017 Celerio AMT. I am looking for a small car with a smooth automatic transmission as an upgrade. My daily usage is just 20 kms and a monthly once long trip of around 200kms. Majority of the journey will be in city trafic. What are my best options under 10 Lakhs, and should I also consider the Punch ev.

If you are looking for a smooth automatic experience, a CVT is your best option. While most cars in this price range use an AMT like your Celerio, there are two options with CVTs – the Hyundai i20 and the Honda Amaze. Both these cars get 1.2-litre four-cylinder engines mated to CVT transmissions that are smooth and easy to use. Both have reasonably roomy cabins, but the Amaze has the advantage of a larger boot. It is also the newer car and therefore gets our vote.

With regard to your query about the Punch EV, there is no denying that it is a phenomenal city car. However, your limited commute of just 20km does not really justify an EV. Also, in our real-world test of the previous Punch EV we managed 216km on a full charge on the highway. The new Punch EV will improve on that with its larger battery pack, but the range might still be a limiting factor on your monthly road trips.

Before you decide, do take a test drive of all these cars.
