Over big mileages, the petrol you save, versus normal petrol and the time you save versus hunting for public chargers, make a bigger difference than the savings with an EV.Here’s the catch you should know: the hybrid’s boot is smaller than the pure petrol’s and maintenance costs would be more than an EV, but not prohibitively so. If you have dedicated parking and can plug in every night, an EV would be cheaper to run and maintain. In that case, skip small batteries. The current Nexon EV got a big update only recently, so a ground-up platform change is unlikely in the next 12 months. The next-gen Nexon is due likely in 2027, and even so, the ICE model will come first, with the EV likely to follow later, so your wait will be long. When it does come, expect it to be pricier than today’s Nexon EV, so it will likely sit well above your budget anyway.For your money today, the recently updated Punch EV gives you a modern EV package, a useful range for daily commutes, and it is easier to live with in tight city traffic and parking. If you truly need more cabin and boot space for family trips, the current Nexon EV exists, but getting a well-equipped one will push you beyond Rs 15 lakh on-road in most cities.

For a family of 5 on a Rs. 17 lakh budget, it gives the most spacious cabin and easy step-in height for parents and kids, it rides well on bad roads, and its real-world range is enough so you'll have to charge it once or twice a week. You also get proper fast charging and Tata’s wider EV support, which matters when you are out with family.Do note that three big adults in the back will be shoulder-to-shoulder on long trips, but it is fine for two adults and a child. If your use is mostly city and you want to save money, the Tata Punch EV LR does the job, but space is tighter for five.

You’ll get more than enough range for the week with a healthy buffer; it is easy to drive and park, rides comfortably over bad patches. Also, Tata’s service reach is fairly wide. The Nexon EV has also proven to be a safe car.Do note, the Nexon EV’s cabin does not feel as premium as the VF6. But for office runs, traffic and the odd weekend trip, it works well.If you want a fresher shape and a bit more road presence from your shortlist, the Tata Curvv EV is worth a look.

An EV makes the most sense when your usage pattern is clear and regular enough to justify the higher upfront cost and when charging is easy and convenient at home or work. If you are not even sure how much you will drive yet, locking yourself into an EV as your first car may be premature.The Kia Sonet is the easier no-stress option. It is easy to live with, a premium feeling inside, compact enough for a first-time driver to manage comfortably. Also, it works equally well whether your usage stays low or suddenly increases. There is also no charging dependency or range planning to think about.The Tata Nexon EV is a good product, and if your usage eventually becomes mostly city-based with regular charging access, it can make financial sense. But as a first car with uncertain usage, it adds variables you do not yet need.
