The recently facelifted Tata Punch EV is a great choice for a city car. With the larger 40kWh battery pack, Tata claims a real-world range of about 335-355km according to its C75 rating, figures which, the carmaker says, 75% of customers can expect based on analysis of historical driving data from its existing EV users.
We are yet to verify these claims, but our road test of the previous 35kWh long-range Punch EV yielded a combined range of 229km, which we expect this facelift to improve upon significantly.

For your 110km commute, an electric car only makes sense if you can charge it at home overnight. In your budget, the Tata Punch EV with the 40kWh battery pack is a good pick and should deliver a real-world range of over 250km. This means you will likely need to charge it every two days. With the optional 7.2kW wallbox charger, you should be able to charge from 10% to 100% in around six hours. However, if home charging is not an option, then a diesel or CNG car makes more sense. Among the available options, the new Punch CNG and the Hyundai Venue diesel stand out. The top-of-the-line Punch CNG Accomplished + S with the AMT is within your budget and comes well equipped, along with a usable boot thanks to the twin CNG tanks. If you prefer diesel power, then the HX5 variant of the Venue diesel is within your budget. While it is not as well-equipped as the Punch, it is the physically larger vehicle with a roomier interior, and the diesel engine offers much better performance. However, if you want an automatic, you will need to stretch your budget to around Rs 14 lakh.Test drive all of these vehicles before making your final decision.

We currently own a 2021 Swift, which has served us well, and we plan to keep it for daily commuting. However, there are seven members in our family, and our twin boys are now 4 years old, so they also need separate seats. Because of this, the Swift feels quite crowded when all seven of us travel together. The main purpose of buying a bigger car would be for long-distance journeys to our native village. These trips are mostly on highways, but a small portion of the route involves rough or mildly off-road conditions. The Swift will continue to be used for regular city travel. Initially, we were considering the Kia Carens, which is a proper 7-seater MPV. However, due to the road presence, looks, and expected ride quality, we are now leaning towards the next-to-base variant of the Mahindra XUV 7XO. We are also not interested in buying another Maruti car. Additionally, engine performance (especially for highway driving with full load), ability to handle occasional bad roads, after-sales service experience, and long-term reliability are key factors in our decision. Since we intend to keep this vehicle for a long duration (around 15 years), we would also appreciate guidance on whether the petrol or diesel engine would be the better choice in the long run. Considering all these factors, would the Mahindra XUV 7XO be a practical and sensible choice for our requirements?

Choose the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel; for seven-up highway trips, it combines strong torque, planted high-speed manners, and tougher bad-road ability than an MPV like the Kia Carens.Since the Maruti Suzuki Swift will handle city duty, your new car will mostly cruise highways with a full load of 7. The XUV’s diesel pulls strongly in the 60-100 km/h band even when packed, and its suspension and clearance will cope better with the rough stretch to your village. The Mahindra diesel is a well-proven unit and delivers well on the refinement front too. Your highway use also keeps the DPF healthy. Aim for 20-30 minutes at about 60+ km/h on each long run. The one thing you give up is third-row and boot practicality versus the Carens; with all three rows up, you’ll fit only 1-2 cabin bags at the rear.If third-row comfort for adults and luggage space matter more than SUV stance, consider the Kia Carens Diesel AT Prestige Plus, which carries a bit more luggage with all seats up.

I am looking to buy a car within a budget of ₹13 lakh (on-road) in Mumbai. My usage will be around 80-90% in the city and 10-20% on highways. The car should be well-equipped with all essential interior and exterior features, offer good comfort for my parents, and ensure low maintenance along with reliable, hassle-free ownership. I may also use it occasionally for long trips. I am specifically looking for an automatic variant and have shortlisted the Honda Elevate V AT. Could you please advise if this is the right choice or suggest better alternatives within my budget?

Your budget rules out the Honda Elevate V CVT in Mumbai (it sits around the Rs 15.5 lakh; check with the dealer for current pricing). But if you are able to get a good discount and stretch your budget a bit, it is definitely worth going for. The Elevate has a peppy 1.5 petrol engine mated to a seamless CVT gearbox, and being a Honda model, it will be reliable and stress-free to maintain. Getting in and out of the Elevate is also easy, and it has a comfy ride quality, which means your parents will be comfortable in this SUV. Being the V variant, it misses out on some feel-good features, but it does get all the necessary features. However, if you want to stick to your budget strictly, consider the Maruti Brezza. Although it is a smaller SUV than the Elevate, it still has a spacious cabin, a comfy ride quality, and a smooth engine-gearbox combination. Also, being a Maruti, it will be reliable and easy to maintain.
