Exterior Design And Engineering

7.0

The XUV 3XO’s styling is polarising. Vertically-oriented headlights, C-shaped daytime lights and a sharply cut bumper lend the 3XO its distinctive face. In profile, the 3XO looks muscular but there’s no escaping how brutally the tail has been chopped to keep length within 4 metres. Tail end styling makes the XUV 3XO look large and substantial.

Interior Space And Comfort

8.0

Inside, the XUV 3XO sports a modern dashboard with cabin quality being a highlight. The dual-screen setup—a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster are among the other items that do much for the look inside the cabin.

The front seats offer a good view and decent comfort, although larger adults may find the seat sides tight. At the back, there’s class-leading shoulder room and enough room for three passengers.

Luggage space is reasonable with 295 litres on offer. The low floor and high loading sill do make it hard to load and unload heavy items.

Performance And Refinement

8.0

The XUV 3XO comes with three engines: a 1.5-litre diesel, a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol, and a 1.2-litre direct injection turbo-petrol (T-GDi). All can be had with 6-speed manuals while the petrols are also offered with 6-speed automatic transmissions. The diesel is available with an AMT automatic.

The diesel is smooth and has strong torque for highway driving. The T-GDi petrol is refined and powerful, with a smooth automatic gearbox. The base petrol is refined in its own right and does not disappoint on performance either. Manual gearboxes are decent, though the shifts aren’t the smoothest.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

8.0

The Mahindra XUV 3XO's 1.5-litre diesel is its most fuel efficient engine option, returning an ARAI-certified mileage of 21.2kpl when had with the AMT gearbox and 20.06kpl with manual.

The petrol T-GDI offers an official 20.1kpl (manual) and 18.2kpl (auto), while the petrol MPFI has an official test economy of 18.89kpl (manual) and 17.96kpl (auto).

Ride Comfort And Handling

9.0

Ride quality is slightly firm but the XUV 3XO handles rough roads well. Ground clearance is good and the suspension deals with the rough stuff well. The steering varies with drive modes.  Grip is solid and braking is confident.

Features And Safety

9.0

The XUV 3XO is packed with features, even in lower variants. Top versions get a 360-degree camera, Harman Kardon sound system, dual-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, and a 65W USB charger. It also has a segment-first electric parking brake with auto-hold. The only big miss is ventilated front seats.

Safety is strong, with six airbags, ESC, three-point seatbelts for all, and ISOFIX mounts standard. Higher trims add a tyre pressure monitor and blind view monitor. ADAS features like adaptive cruise control and emergency braking work well but the controls are buried in the menus.

Value For Money

8.0

Priced from Rs 7.49 lakh, the XUV 3XO offers great value with more features than its rivals. Top-end models are on the pricey side but the performance on offer make them worth the stretch. With a roomy cabin, long list of features, strong engines, and keen pricing, the XUV 3XO is a well-rounded package that’s hard to ignore.

Mahindra XUV 3XO FAQs

The Mahindra XUV 3XO’s interior can be had with light-coloured upholstery and soft-touch materials, while its spacious rear seats are among the comfiest in the segment and can accommodate three adults. The 3XO also comes with dual-zone automatic climate control that’s exclusive to it, plus a panoramic sunroof that’s only otherwise offered in the Kia Syros and Tata Nexon, and an electronic parking brake with auto-hold.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO’s boot is smaller than that of its main rivals, while it also misses out on ventilated seats, paddle shifters and rear sunshades. Furthermore, the dual digital displays of the 3XO do not look as modern as those found in its newer rivals. The boot space of the 3XO is also less than what other SUVs in this segment offer.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO with the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol direct injection engine makes 131hp and 230Nm, and it’s mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Even though this is a three-cylinder engine, its refinement is impressive. It also offers a sharp throttle response and provides strong mid-range performance that’s both enjoyable and feels effortless. Being the most powerful models in its segment means that the XUV 3XO is the quickest SUV to 100kph in its segment. The 3XO also feels tough out on our roads, while good mechanical grip and a good suspension setup provides a mature ride and handling balance. The brakes are confidence-inspiring, too.

Unlike the diesel version which is offered with an AMT, the turbo-petrol versions of the Mahindra XUV 3XO are available with a more modern Aisin-sourced 6-speed torque converter automatic. It’s definitely more convenient than the manual gearbox, providing smooth and timely shifts especially when you’re on the move. Moreover, the 6-speed manual’ clutch can feel tricky to modulate at low city speeds.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO has a 5-star safety rating, which puts it in the same league as the Tata Nexon and Skoda Kylaq but higher than the Maruti Brezza and Kia Sonet. The 3XO’s safety features comprises six airbags, tyre-pressure monitoring, electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, auto-emergency braking, high-beam assist, blind-view monitor and traffic sign recognition.

Hi everyone, I'm planning to buy my first car and would really appreciate your suggestions. My priorities are safety (top priority), good-looking design, decent mileage and automatic transmission. I drive around 1,000 km per month and this will be my first car. I plan to keep it for at least 5 years and I am currently considering Maruti Suzuki Brezza (2026), Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO. If you have owned or driven any of these, I would love to hear about your real-world experience regarding reliability, service and maintenance costs, automatic gearbox performance, mileage and comfort for city and highway driving. I am also curious about long-term ownership experience. Which one would you recommend, and why? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Out of the options you've listed, the Nexon 1.2 Turbo DCA and XUV 3XO Turbo AT deliver better value than the Brezza, as far as equipment and performance go. Out of these, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is a solid choice for its smoother, stronger engine and its seamless 6-speed torque converter (automatic). Cabin space is very good, and it drives like a more expensive car, giving you a confident experience be it in the city or out on the highway. Before going ahead, do keep in mind that the XUV's boot is a bit small, fuel efficiency might not be as good as the Brezza's, and Mahindra's service network isn't as widespread as Maruti's. However, on the whole, the XUV feels is a good option, and one that we'd recommend.

Hi expert, can you please suggest which car is better between the XUV 3XO AX7 petrol automatic and the newly launched Renault Duster 160 DCT adventure variant?

Verified
6d

The Renault Duster is larger and has a class-best 518-litre boot. Also, its ride-handling balance is among the best in its segment, which makes it ideal for long drives. Yes, the 1.3 Turbo-petrol with the 6-speed dual-clutch transmission will be a bit pricier than the Mahindra car, but if you enjoy driving, it is certainly worth the stretch. Over the XUV 3XO, you also get ventilated front seats and paddle shifters, among other things. You could also consider the new Nissan Tekton, which is a badge-engineered version of the Duster, with a brighter interior (in top-spec variants).

I own a Mahindra XUV 3XO MPFi Petrol, and I mainly use it for city driving. However, I'm getting only around 7-8 kmpl in the city. Should I consider installing a CNG kit in the car?

Verified
3w

We wouldn't recommend installing an aftermarket CNG kit on your Mahindra XUV 3XO MPFi Petrol. While it may significantly reduce your running costs, there are a few important compromises to consider. An aftermarket CNG conversion can affect your manufacturer's warranty, reduce boot space and may also impact long-term reliability and refinement if the installation isn't carried out to a very high standard. We'd be even more cautious when it comes to turbo-petrol engines. Unless the CNG system has been developed and validated by the OEM, we generally don't recommend fitting one. Turbo-petrol engines are more complex to calibrate for CNG, and an aftermarket installation may not deliver the same levels of drivability, performance and reliability as a factory-engineered solution. Tata is one of the few manufacturers currently offering a factory-fitted CNG option with a turbo-petrol engine on the Nexon, and that has been engineered from the outset to work with CNG.A city's fuel efficiency of 7-8kpl is on the lower side, but if your driving is predominantly in heavy stop-start traffic, it isn't entirely unexpected. Before considering a CNG conversion, we'd recommend getting the car inspected at the service centre to ensure there are no underlying issues. Also check that the tyre pressures are correct and review your driving style, as these can have a noticeable impact on fuel economy.

I am confused between the Nexon, XUV 3XO, and Venue as my first car. My running is expected to be 1,000-1,200 km per month. My priorities are: 1) Performance, 2) Mileage and ownership cost, 3) Features, and 4) Rear-seat and boot space. Please advise and suggest the best-value variant as well. I am inclined towards an automatic gearbox. Should I look for the sedan as well? Is the Diesel option feasible for me if I want to keep my car for the next 5 years?

Verified
6w

Of your three shortlisted SUVs, the Hyundai Venue 1.0 T-GDi makes the most sense as it's the best all-rounder in the segment. It's got a good blend of performance and efficiency, maintenance is relatively cheap and hassle-free, and there are loads of features on offer, even in mid-level variants. It offers a good mix of rear-seat space and boot volume, which are both big improvements on the last-gen Venue. If there's a downside, it's that its DCT automatic can be jerky in low-speed traffic, and needs to be driven with this in mind. The manual, meanwhile, has a light and smooth clutch and gearshift action, so consider it as well. The Mahindra XUV 3XO scores high on performance, with the strongest engine in the class, and it has great space inside the cabin. Its downside, however, is that boot space is not so great, and neither is fuel economy. The Tata Nexon is also a decent all-rounder, but in most areas, it can't quite keep up with the newer and more polished Venue. Overall, the Venue is the one we think you should go for.Diesel is certainly a feasible option if you plan to keep the car for 5 years, and the mileage will certainly be better. But these engines are nowhere near as refined or punchy as their petrol counterparts, and thanks to newer emissions mitigation technology, they're far more expensive to buy, and require extra maintenance to run. Thus, for your usage, and for a first car, we would stick to petrol.

My father-in-law is nearing 60 and is planning to upgrade to an automatic car with a maximum budget of ₹15 lakh. He is currently driving a 10-year-old Swift VDI and is looking for a comfortable, reliable, and value-for-money automatic car for long-term use. Currently, we have shortlisted Maruti Brezza VXI / ZXI Automatic and Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro AT. We would appreciate suggestions on which would be the better option considering comfort, ease of driving, maintenance, reliability, and overall value for money for senior citizens.

Verified
10w

Since you're looking for an easy, comfortable automatic car under Rs. 15 lakh, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI AT is the one you should be looking at. It is very easy to drive in traffic thanks to the light controls, the torque converter automatic shifts smoothly, and the tall seat makes getting in and out easy for a 60-year-old. The ride is calm over broken roads, so daily runs and longer trips feel less tiring. Maruti’s wide service network and low part costs also make life easier over 8-10 years, and resale is usually strong. Two things to note: it is not the quickest thanks to the naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine that puts out just 103hp, and if the ZXI is over your budget in your city, you'll have to settle for the VXI automatic that will feel a bit basic inside. Pick the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro AT only if he wants stronger pull and more features for the money. Overall, for comfort, ease, low upkeep and trust, go for the Brezza automatic.
