I live in Hyderabad and am planning to purchase a new car with a budget of ₹12 lakh, extendable up to ₹15 lakh on-road. My monthly usage is 800 km in the city, and once every quarter, more than 1,800 km on highways. I am 30 years old, 6'1", and heavily built. While travelling on highways, I need strong performance, as I am used to driving my friend’s Innova Crysta on highways. My priorities are safety, features and interiors, mileage, performance, comfort, and ease of driving. My 2021 Kia Sonet delivered 13–15 kmpl in Hyderabad city traffic and 18–20 kmpl on highways. I would prefer similar mileage in my new car without worrying about fuel efficiency. Can diesel be considered in 2026? I plan to test drive the exact suggested configurations, so specific recommendations would really help.

Since you already own the Sonet, a natural replacement for you would be the Kia Syros, which has broad and comfy seats, huge cabin space, and with high quality interiors and a lengthy equipment list, it certainly feels like you've spent your money well. The HTK+ Diesel MT variant should easily fall within your budget, and because it uses the same engine and gearbox as the Sonet, you could expect similar (or slightly lower) efficiency and performance too.

Alternatively, you could consider a Mahindra XUV 3XO Diesel MT, which is like a tough, confident compact SUV with excellent driving dynamics and strong performance.

Yes, you can consider diesel in 2026 as Hyderabad does not have the 10-year diesel cap that applies in NCR. Also, your periodic highway drives will also help keep the DPF healthy.

Or AX7 cabin with white interiors looks more spacious because of the color. And there are additional interiors for this variant. Should I stretch my budget to AX7 ? Does it add value over the AX5 for the price difference? And is it okay if I ask them for MFG 2025 car, so I can can get it at a discounted price (or) better to go with 2026 cars itself

Running would be 70% in the city (Delhi), with 3-4 occasional intercity vacation trips annually, and my average monthly running is around 500 Kms. Hello, I am looking to buy a sub-4-metre car and will be a first-time car buyer. My daily running is around 40-50 km, with a 60:40 highway-to-city usage ratio. Consider the Maruti Suzuki Baleno petrol. With 40-50km a day and mostly highway driving, it delivers very good real-world fuel efficiency, keeps service bills low, and rides comfortably over bad patches. If you prefer a slightly higher seating position, then the Fronx is a good choice too. Both are E20-ready, and Maruti has done a good job calibrating its engines to run on E20 fuel, so efficiency remains competitive. When higher ethanol blends eventually roll out, you can still expect some drop in fuel economy, though most modern cars are already material-compatible with ethanol blends beyond E20.For your usage, petrol makes more sense. However, if you expect your running to increase significantly, particularly on the highway, then the Kia Sonet diesel or Hyundai Venue diesel would be worth considering.

I was planning to buy the Honda Amaze CVT earlier, but due to uncertainty around a higher percentage of ethanol blending, I have decided to go with the Tata Altroz diesel. But now I read that the government is also planning to blend isobutanol in diesel. Should I buy a diesel vehicle or not? Will isobutanol adversely affect diesel engines and affect fuel economy?

There is no reason to avoid either a petrol or a diesel car purely because of future fuel-blending plans.Just as modern petrol cars are being engineered to handle higher ethanol blends, any future diesel blend regulations will be accompanied by corresponding changes from vehicle manufacturers. If isobutanol blending is introduced, it will be done in a controlled manner, and vehicles sold in the market will be calibrated accordingly. There is currently no evidence to suggest that such blends would cause adverse effects on modern diesel engines when used within the prescribed limits.The more important question is whether a diesel suits your usage pattern. If your running is high and includes regular highway trips, the Altroz Diesel remains a compelling option. However, if your usage is predominantly urban, the Honda Amaze CVT is still the more sensible choice. It offers a smoother driving experience, lower complexity and none of the DPF-related concerns associated with modern diesel engines.
