I am planning to buy an SUV for myself and my family. My daily driving will be around 80 km, and I plan to do occasional off-roading once a month. My average monthly driving is about 2,000 km. I am looking for a powerful, safe, and secure vehicle with 7 seats that is also economical. I am open to electric, hybrid, petrol, and diesel options, but not CNG. Since I have high running, I am also looking for low running costs. Please suggest, as I plan to make the purchase within the next 2 months.

If you can stretch your budget, the Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid is the best overall choice. It offers excellent comfort, much better space across all three rows and very low running cost for a large vehicle thanks to its hybrid system, which delivers high efficiency for city and highway use. It is also among the most reliable long-term ownership options.

Now, since you mentioned occasional off-roading, you need to be realistic. Cars like the Carens Clavis and Hycross are not meant for serious off-roading. If your off-road use is mild, like rough roads or trails, they will manage. If you want proper off-road capability, then something like the Mahindra Scorpio N diesel is the better fit. It is rugged, has strong torque and proper SUV capability, while still being usable daily.

The trade-off is clear. The Scorpio N is tougher and more capable off-road, but less comfortable and less efficient than the Carens or Hycross.

We would strongly advise against installing aftermarket CNG on any of these SUVs. All three – the Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV 7XO and Scorpio N - are large, heavy vehicles with powerful turbocharged petrol engines. Fitting CNG to such engines is not recommended, as it can lead to drivability issues, increased wear and potential reliability concerns over time. More importantly, these SUVs are not designed with CNG in mind, and the installation can compromise safety and performance.If fuel economy is a top priority, opt for their diesel versions instead. The Mahindra and Tata offer strong torque, excellent highway efficiency and are well-suited to long-distance touring. If you are set on CNG, it is better to look at smaller, naturally aspirated petrol cars that are either factory-fitted or specifically designed for CNG use.Between the three, the XUV 7XO diesel would be our recommendation. It offers a more modern package, better ride comfort and a more premium cabin than the Scorpio N, while the Safari diesel is also a strong contender if you prefer Tata's design and feature set. But CNG should not be the deciding factor here.

Recommend a 7-seater vehicle primarily for city driving and occasional (once in a quarter) outstation (hills and plains) drive. My daily driving is about 100 km.

If you are looking for a more budget-friendly option, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga CNG is worth considering, but it is not as refined or as comfortable as the HyCross. Hi, I’m planning to upgrade my car. I currently drive an EcoSport diesel and am planning to buy a 7-seater. I’m confused between the XUV 7XO Diesel Automatic AX5 and the Toyota Hycross GX, as both fit into my budget at the moment. I usually drive around 200-300 km a month in city traffic for my office commute, and I also go on long trips of around 500-600 km one way once every three months. I want a car that is good on the highway, allows for good overtaking, and offers decent mileage. It should also be easy to maintain, as I don’t want to deal with frequent issues or headaches. The XUV 7XO diesel automatic is the better choice if you specifically want strong mid-range performance for overtakes, but if your daily running is very short trips, you could face DPF clogging issues. Given your priorities, the Hycross GX is the safer and more sensible long-term choice.
