I travel around 100km daily due to my sales job. I am looking for an EV or a hybrid to reduce running costs. My main requirement is a soft suspension, as I have a history of back problems and suffer from sacroiliitis. The car will be chauffeur-driven, so excellent rear-seat comfort is essential. My budget is under โ‚น35 lakh, and I plan to make the purchase within the next 1 to 2 months.

The Toyota Innova HyCross Hybrid is a good option to consider. It is a spacious and comfortable seven-seater that comes with a comfortable ride quality. The top-spec ZX variant features extendable leg rests on the rear seats, which adds to the comfort, and the cabin is well-appointed too.

I am planning to buy a new car and am confused between the XEV 9S, Harrier EV, and Fortuner 4x2 Diesel Automatic. My usage is mostly within the city, with occasional weekend drives of up to 100 km. I live in an area with a lot of incline terrain and bad roads, and my monthly driving is around 500 km. I also have my own parking space where I can install a charger. Considering my driving pattern and road conditions, should I opt for an EV or choose a petrol or diesel vehicle, and which car would be the best choice for my needs?

For city use, the Toyota Fortuner is not ideal. Since you have private parking that accommodates a charger, this is a perfect time to switch to an EV. The Mahindra XEV 9E is more appealing than the Harrier EV, but the Mahindra XEV 9S is the one to focus on because it is more practical and also costs less. 

It offers enough range for your 100 km weekend runs, has sufficient power and torque to tackle steep inclines, and has adequate ground clearance for rough roads. The Fortuner will handle rough roads better, but given that it is much more than the 9S. It is hard to justify the extra spend for occasional rough-road use.

Which car should I buy with a budget of around โ‚น15 lakh if I want a petrol manual variant with a panoramic sunroof, good safety and mileage, and should I wait for the Kia Seltos 2026 or choose between the Toyota Hyryder and Grand Vitara, considering I can stretch my budget by only Rs. 50,000?

If โ‚น15 lakh is a strict budget and a sunroof is a must, we suggest you consider either the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder or the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. With year-end offers currently available, you can negotiate and secure a good deal.

The new Kia Seltos is an attractive option as well, but at this price point, the variant you get may not include a sunroof, and the Seltos is not particularly known for fuel efficiency. That said, if you are keen on the updated Seltos, it may be worth waiting for the price announcement on 2nd January.

Which is the most comfortable 5 or 6 seater with the best ride quality and good reclining rear seats? Budget is not a limitation.

If budget is not a limitation, then the best 5-6 seater will have to be a three-row luxury MPV, as luxury sedans are fundamentally designed for four people, and three-row luxury SUVs have compromised third row comfort.
For 5-6 people, the Toyota Velfire is the most comfortable, as even the third row has good space all around and comfy seats that are almost on par with the second row. You get lots of features and storage space, which makes it like a lounge on wheels. But at Rs. 1.58 to 1.7 crore (on-road Mumbai), it is very expensive.

I currently own a 2016 Ford Figo diesel manual with around 62,000 km on the odometer. My annual usage is about 8,000-10,000 km, mostly in bumper-to-bumper Mumbai traffic, with occasional highway trips two to three times a year. Given the traffic conditions, I am considering switching to an automatic. However, after test-driving a few petrol cars, I felt they lacked the torque and handling I am accustomed to in the Figo. Should I retain my current car for a few more years or upgrade to a new one? If upgrading, please suggest an SUV that offers strong performance with decent mileage.

If you are happy with the Ford Figo and it is running fine, you could hold on to it, however it will get progressively difficult to maintain it. Thus, if you can change it might be a good idea to do so now. 

Consider the Maruti Suzuki Fronx / Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor. The car will feel similar in its fun-to-drive character to your Figo, and you could opt for either the turbo or the naturally aspirated engine. 

The 1.0 litre turbo will be more peppy and fun to drive but given that turbo's are very sensitive to driving style, you will likely see real world efficiency figures than quote. In this regard, the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine will be better, though at a lower performance level. 

Test drive the two and see which you prefer.

I want to purchase a new car, and my budget is up to Rs 8 lakh. I am 70 years old. Please advise.

There are multiple options that you could consider in your Rs 8 lakh budget, but we'd recommend you shortlist the Maruti Suzuki Baleno Zeta or the Toyota Glanza S, and the Tata Punch.
The Baleno/Glanza (essentially the same car with some cosmetic modifications) will be smoother, more efficient and nicer to drive. And the ownership experience with Maruti or Toyota is likely to be trouble-free. 

The Tata Punch, due to its high seats and wide-opening doors, will make getting in and out very easy. Also, being an SUV, visibility is also better from the Punch's driving seat. So if you'd like to opt for an SUV body style, the Punch is a good option.

I am looking to buy an SUV with a budget of up to Rs 22 to 23 lakh. My must-haves are a minimum 3-star safety rating, excellent suspension, at least 13 kmpl fuel efficiency with a 60% city and 40% highway usage pattern, the ability to pre-cool or pre-heat the car before entering it, and a fuss-free ownership experience.

The Maruti Suzuki Victoris hybrid seems to fit the bill. It has been awarded 5 stars by BNCAP for its crashworthiness. Ride comfort is excellent, and it handles well, too. And with the hybrid powertrain, you can expect excellent fuel efficiency, significantly higher than 13kpl (average).
It also gets an option to pre-cool or pre-heat the vehicle, and being a Maruti Suzuki car, the ownership experience is likely to be fuss-free. Alternatively, you may consider the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder hybrid or Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara hybrid, which share the same platform and boast of similar strengths.

My wife doesnโ€™t like the comfort of the Jimny - the seats hurt her back and neck, and she dislikes the bouncy ride on highways. She wants to sell it and get something like a Creta or an Innova for comfort in the city and smooth highway drives. I want a vehicle that can handle 4x4 duties (winter Spiti trips) and take a beating. Is there a car that can strike that balance, ideally under โ‚น25 lakh? We drive in the city about 75% of the time and take highway trips 25% of the time.

Yes, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny is very adept off-road, thanks to Suzuki's All-Grip Pro 4X4 system, which also features a low ratio. However, it does feel bouncy on regular roads - just like most 4X4s. Thus, we would recommend you look at the all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara / Toyota Hyryder or the Maruti Suzuki Victoris

These SUVs use Suzuki All-Grip Select, which does not have a low ratio but has a Snow mode and also allow you to lock AWD. For the winter Spiti trails, this should suffice. Moreover, these SUVs will be far better in terms of ride comfort in the city and on the highway.

Hi Autocar. I am looking for a comfortable car with good driving dynamics. I am deciding between the Toyota Innova Hycross VX (Optional) and the Tata Harrier EV. I like the Harrierโ€™s driving feel, whereas the Hycross excels in rear-seat comfort. Whatโ€™s your take on this? My budget is under โ‚น35 lakh.

As you rightly said, the Toyota Innova HyCross is better from the rear seat, while the Tata Harrier EV is more enjoyable from the front. It's up to you to decide where your priority lies. 

When it comes to performance and dynamics, the Harrier EV ticks more boxes, as it has a much stronger and more responsive powertrain, sharper steering, tighter dynamics and a pretty comfortable ride in isolation too. 

However, its shortcoming is that of all EVs - the limitation of range and dependency on charging. Plus, the Harrier EV has shown signs of electronic glitches, at least on early cars. 

If these are things you can work with, the Harrier EV seems like the better choice for you. The Innova, meanwhile, is the better all-rounder. It's more spacious and comfortable, with rock-solid reliability and a seamless service experience.

Hello team. Iโ€™m selling my old i20 and planning to buy a new car. Iโ€™ve shortlisted the Tata Altroz, Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glanza and Maruti Dzire. My priorities are an automatic transmission, good mileage, 4/5-star safety, an armrest and a rear wiper. Iโ€™m attracted to the Glanza for its styling and the UV-cut glass on the top variant. My maximum budget is โ‚น10.5-11 lakh on-road in Telangana. Please suggest which is best.

The Toyota Glanza is a rebadged Maruti Suzuki Baleno, and the only difference between the two is the badge, some interior trim colours and the warranty. The Glanza is sold with a 3-year/1,00,000km warranty, while the Baleno gets a 2-year/40,000km warranty.

The Glanza is a good option if you like the way it looks, and the UV cut glass is a must-have feature for you. However, if you are looking for a car that will hold its value better, then the Maruti Suzuki Baleno is the better option, and also features UV cut class.

The Tata Altroz does get you the option of a diesel engine, and a DCT automatic, which is the more sophisticated auto gearbox here. However, you could also consider the new Hyundai i20, which comes with a CVT auto or a DCT with its powerful turbo engine.
