I am using a 2007 Honda City ZX VTEC, which is still running well. I am planning to buy a new car, and I drive enthusiastically. I like the used Skoda Octavia and am looking for a used car under ₹12 to 13 lakh, but I am worried about high spare part costs and DSG gearbox issues. The Honda Civic looks good, but its 0 to 100 feels slow with CVT. Other options I am considering are the Slavia 1.5 GT or the latest-generation Honda City. My usage is around 10,000km per year. An SUV is also acceptable if it drives well. Which option is better?

We would rule out a used Skoda Octavia because, for your budget, you are likely to get only a third-gen 2016-2018 model, depending on the condition and the kilometres clocked. Octavias are expensive to maintain and can be expensive too, so you could end up with a white elephant paying lots of workshop bills.
As you said, the Honda Civic is slow, but also with a CVT, it's not a great driver’s car, though the engine is smooth and free-revving.
Your best bet is to go for a new Skoda Slavia 1.5 with the DSG transmission, which is a fantastic driver’s car and, in fact, will match an old generation Octavia for thrills. SUVs don’t offer the same driving pleasure as a sedan, and since you are an enthusiast, it's best you stick to a sedan.

I want to buy a car with a budget of Rs 16 to 17 lakh. My yearly running is around 6,000 to 7,000 km, but I am a driving enthusiast and enjoy driving. Please suggest a suitable car.

Since you are an auto enthusiast and love to drive, we would recommend you look at a sedan car like the Skoda Slavia or the Volkswagen Virtus. They are both essentially the same car, built on the same platform or near identical in terms of drive feel.
For your budget of 16-17 lakh, you will get the smaller 1.0 litre TSi engine, and you will notice turbo lag; however, past that, the performance is lively enough, and the engine is quite rev-happy.
If you can stretch your budget a bit, opt for the larger 1.5-litre TSI engine. It delivers a very sprightly drive. Beyond the engine, both cars have a superb ride and handling balance.

I currently drive a 2022 Tata Nexon XZ+ (HS) petrol manual and want to upgrade to a manual car that feels like an enthusiast’s car with great throttle response and engaging driving dynamics, since I find the Nexon’s response laggy. My budget is around ₹20 lakh. I have shortlisted the VW Virtus GT 1.5 and the Skoda Kushaq. Are there any other manual cars I should consider?

Since you want to upgrade from your Tata Nexon to a fun-to-drive manual car, you should consider the Volkswagen Taigun 1.5 TSI MT. The Taigun is one of the best handling midsize SUVs, and its 150hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol is one of the punchiest around. 

You could also consider the Skoda Kushaq or the Skoda Slavia/Volkswagen Virtus, but none of those get a manual gearbox option with the 1.5 TSI engine - only a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

I am looking to buy a petrol automatic, preferably a sedan. My on-road budget is ₹20 lakh. What are my options?

Given your requirement and budget, you currently have four options. The Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus are mechanically identical, and they stand out for their punchy turbo petrol engine options and ride and handling balance. 

The Honda City has a refined 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine and has the best back seat. The Hyundai Verna, meanwhile, has the most features, and it can be had with either a turbo-petrol or a naturally-aspirated petrol engine. 

The Slavia, Virtus and Verna have also received a full, 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP.

I drive 1,500 to 2,000 km per month, mostly on highways and rural interior roads. I currently own a petrol manual Ford Figo Aspire. I am looking for a sedan or SUV with good stability, long-distance comfort, a peppy engine, and strong build quality for a family of four. My budget is ₹17 lakh. I am a Skoda fan and have the Kylaq or Slavia in mind, but I am also considering the Honda Elevate and Tata Sierra. Kindly suggest which car will be more suitable.

The Skoda Slavia is a good idea, given your requirements and the fact that you're a fan of Skoda cars. However, since you will be driving in rural interiors, a bit of extra ground clearance that an SUV offers will provide an additional safety net for you.
Definitely consider the new Tata Sierra, and while the full price list is not yet available, signs indicate that you should get a mid-range model within your budget of Rs 17 lakh. It promises to be comfortable and tough, as has been the case with existing Tata SUVs, and it comes with a wide range of engines and gearboxes, including two petrols and a diesel, so you can take your pick.

I have been using a Honda Jazz for the past 8 years, and it has served me well. I’m planning to go in for a new car 2026 model, sometime in the first quarter of 2026. I myself drive the car and prefer a manual transmission to an automatic. I enjoy making cross-country road trips and am looking for a car that is good in performance and handling, with good all-around visibility. My budget is around ₹15L, but it can be stretched. I was looking at the Skoda Kushaq, Honda Amaze, and Hyundai Venue. Please advise.

Considering your preference for a car that excels in performance and handling, we would recommend the Skoda Kushaq. The Skoda Kushaq has a very peppy 1.5-litre petrol engine; however, that only comes paired with an automatic gearbox. Since you want a manual, you will have to opt for the 1.0 litre engine; however, this unit too delivers quite nicely on performance.
You can also consider the Skoda Slavia, powertrain-wise wise it is the same as the Kushaq, but being a sedan, the handling feels more sporty, and what's nice is that the Slavia has a very good ground clearance too.

Hi Autocar, please advise me on a suitable automatic replacement for my 2014 Rapid Petrol that offers good driving dynamics but with more creature comforts. My annual driving is about 10,000 km, primarily in the city. I am willing to spend up to 25,00,000.

Given that you're looking for good driving dynamics like your Rapid, you should consider either the Skoda Slavia or the Kushaq.
Go for the Slavia if you prefer the dynamics of a sedan, and go for the Skoda Kushaq if you want more ground clearance and practicality.
Both of these Skoda cars come with punchy 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engines, which can be had with automatic gearboxes. Opt for the 150hp, 1.5 TSI if it's performance you're after, and you can even go for the sportier 'Monte Carlo' trim of both for some added spice.

I’m planning to buy an automatic car (or electric) with a budget of ₹18–25 lakh. I want an automatic with no noticeable “rubber-band” effect, and I prefer strong performance. I’m deciding between the Tata Sierra, Tata Harrier, Skoda Kushaq, or the Sierra in petrol - which should I choose and why?

Since you prefer performance and like to drive, the Volkswagen Taigun or Skoda Kushaq will be a better choice. 

While we are yet to sample the Sierra on the road, it isn't the sort of SUV to be designed for spirited driving. An even better option compared to these would be the Skoda Slavia or Volkswagen Virtus

They are sedans, but still get good ground clearance and are superb to drive. The 1.5 TSI engine offers excellent performance, and they are well-equipped and practical too.

I want to upgrade from a Grand i10 to a new car within a budget of Rs 20 lakh. I drive around 1,200 km per month, and do around 2,000 km long drives every quarter. Please suggest the best option.

The Hyundai Creta 1.5L Petrol IVT is a well-rounded offering if you prefer a midsize SUV. The Volkswagen Virtus or Skoda Slavia 1.5L DSG are fun-to-drive sedans in this price range.
If fuel efficiency is something you're concerned about, you could even consider a Maruti Suzuki Victoris hybrid.

I want to buy a sedan and I’m deciding between the Honda City automatic and the Skoda Slavia automatic. Which one should I choose?

The Honda City has some inherent strengths. It's got a responsive 121hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine and a smooth CVT automatic gearbox that make it a great city car; the rear seat comfort is excellent, and it also comes with the peace of mind associated with Honda ownership. The City is a sedan you can’t go wrong with, and it’s the more level-headed buy. 

The Skoda Slavia has a lively 115hp, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, quick-shifting 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, and crisp handling, making it the more engaging car to drive. It also comes better equipped and does well for itself on rear seat comfort, too. The Skoda also has the tougher build, the plusher ride and superior refinement. 

In our city and highway test loops, the Honda City mileage for the CVT variant stands at 12kpl and 16.4kpl, respectively, clearly outperforming the Slavia mileage, which delivers 10.5kpl and 13.4kpl.
