Mahindra XUV 7XO expert review

Autocar score
9

We like

  • Punchy performance from both powertrains

  • Ride comfort and high-speed composure

  • Feature packed

We don't like

  • Third row is tight for adults

  • Confusing infotainment UI

The XUV 7XO is instantly recognisable, albeit with an edgier treatment for its front fascia. The signature DRLs are still there but arenโ€™t as large as before, the LED headlight flanks a new slimmer grille and below is a sharper bumper with four ICE cube-shaped lighting units.
The silhouette hasnโ€™t changed, but wheel size has gone up from 18 to 19-inchers and trim around the wheel arches is gloss black. At the rear, the LED taillamps are taken from the XEV 9S and it gets a more squared-off bumper. Overall, the design isnโ€™t quite as cohesive as the original design, but it is well executed nonetheless.

Comfort up front is excellent, with the wide seats offering good support and a decent range of adjustment. Both front seats are ventilated and powered, with the driver getting a memory function, while the passenger seat has powered boss mode. The steering wheel now also adjusts for reach as well as rake. The two-spoke steering is also lifted from the 9S, but this time gets physical buttons instead of the haptic ones. The middle row is similarly comfortable, with a wide bench or optional captainโ€™s chairs โ€“ both options are ventilated. The seat reclines, but it doesnโ€™t slide like the one in the XEV 9S. While there is plenty of legroom in the middle row without it, a sliding function would have helped the third row. As it stands, the third row is cramped for adults. With it stowed away the luggage area is substantial.

The trio of 12.3-inch displays โ€“ standard across the range โ€“ are sharp and bright, and the infotainment and passenger display are responsive to touch, though the user interface does take some getting used to. The absence of physical buttons means adjusting the HVAC is now, at minimum, a two-step process. The passenger screen gets a privacy filter here unlike on the BEVS, so it no longer draws your eye when checking the far-side mirror. Also featured is a 1,400W 16-speaker Harman Kardon music system, a bring-your-own-device provision to mount tablets on the front seatbacks, with an integrated 65W Type-C charger. The all-important panoramic sunroof is available from the mid AX5 trim onwards, but for rear window sunblinds youโ€™ll need to splurge for the top AX7 L trim. Safety kit is equally comprehensive, with six airbags, four-wheel disc brakes, ABS, ESC, hill-hold and hill-descent control standard. The AX7 T trim adds a knee airbag and an upgraded Level 2 ADAS suite.

The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol makes 203hp and 380Nm, channelled to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or torque-converter automatic. It feels grunty, almost diesel-like at the lower end, but is happy to extend to the 5,800rpm redline. Itโ€™s refined and smooth too, with no vibrations creeping into the cabin. The six-speed automatic is also well suited to the engine, but paddle shifters are still missing. The 2.2-litre diesel motor puts out 185hp and 450Nm (420Nm with the manual), and while itโ€™s not as effortless as the petrol, itโ€™s no slouch either. Refinement is good; the engine gets vocal when pushed hard, but in day-to-day driving itโ€™s nicely muffled. Here too, the automatic is a good match for the engine, but the manual feels shorter geared than youโ€™d expect. Itโ€™s happy to chug along in third around town and rarely requires a downshift to make an overtake, but a taller sixth would help it settle into a cruise and eke out better efficiency still.

Mahindra hasnโ€™t quoted fuel-efficiency figures, but we donโ€™t expect them to differ much from the XUV700. The ARAI figures for the petrol XUV700 are 13kpl with the automatic and 15kpl with the manual โ€“ in the real world, these often drop into the single digits. The diesel XUV700 is more frugal, with ARAI figures of 17kpl and 16.57kpl for the manual and automatic respectively, and itโ€™s possible to get close to these numbers on a steady highway cruise.

Despite the wheel size going up an inch, the low-speed ride is even better than before thanks to the new DaVinci dampers. Thereโ€™s a newfound plushness to the way it soaks up rough patches without letting anything through to the cabin. It also gets hydraulic bump stops that greatly soften that thud you get when the suspension bottoms or tops out. As before, high-speed manners are superb with an uncanny ability to mask speed as the dampers do a great job of keeping the body flat and composed. Confidence is high through the bends as the XUV 7XO unflinchingly sticks to the chosen line. Even unsettling mid-corner bumps and dips are dealt with in a fluid, one-and-done motion. The electric steering is light enough to be twirled with one finger at a standstill but weights up and provides good feedback as speeds rise. Braking performance is strong too, with disc brakes on all four corners โ€“ now standard across the range.

The starting price of Rs 13.66 lakh โ€“ exactly the same as the outgoing MX trim of the XUV700 โ€“ is incredible bang for your buck. These prices are introductory and set to rise after the first 40,000 bookings, but it is still tremendous value for what you get. The strong engines continue to deliver the punchy performance weโ€™ve come to love, and the ride and handling balance is even better than before. If that isnโ€™t enough, there is enough tech to shame some from segments above. Sure thereโ€™s still bits that need improving like a less confusing UI and more physical controls and those who regularly seat seven will find more comfort in the back of some of the competition, but given the XUV7XOโ€™s tremendous abilities in all other areas, this is something many will ignore.

Asked by: Marisetty Venkata VIdyadharon Mar 26, 2026

I own a Ford EcoSport Titanium diesel manual transmission 2015 model. I would like to upgrade to a new automatic petrol car. Please suggest a car that has very good build quality and has a 5-star safety rating. I stay in Hyderabad and need to go through bumper-to-bumper traffic. I have heard of DCT/DSG heating problems in heavy traffic, so I am considering a torque converter, CVT, or wet-clutch DCT. I am not sure if this is the correct decision, but I need a good, durable, and efficient automatic transmission that is smooth in slow-moving traffic. My usage is 70% city and 30% highway, so highway performance, stability, and good handling are also important. I am also looking for a car I can keep for 10-15 years, so durability and relevant features are important. I am not looking for very high-end tech, but I do want useful safety and comfort features. I also considered a 7 seater so that I can use the third row for luggage room, or occasionally, when my family members grow after a kid's marriage, maybe we would use the third row seating for a city outing. However, I am also fond of good boot space. So, not able to decide here. My budget is 25 lakh. Can you please suggest a car that is strong, safe, robust, and reliable in the above budget?

Go for the updated Skoda Kushaq 1.0 TSI with the new 8-speed automatic. It has a five-star crash rating, a robust build, and a smooth 8-speed torque-converter automatic, along with good stability and handling for your 70:30 cityโ€“highway mix.
Your bumper-to-bumper driving will benefit from the torque-converterโ€™s low-speed smoothness, avoiding the DCT/DSG heat concerns you mentioned. It is a five-star safety-rated car with six airbags, ESC and ISOFIX mounts for long-term peace of mind. Highway stability is confident at triple-digit speeds, while 188mm of ground clearance and a 385-litre boot keep it practical. For 10-15 years of ownership, the 1.0 TSI engine is tried and tested, and the automatic is a safer bet than dual-clutch units. Do opt for the maximum extended warranty available.
The one thing you give up is advanced driver assistance. The Kushaq doesnโ€™t offer ADAS features like adaptive cruise control or lane-keep assist, so keep that in mind.
If you genuinely need a third row, consider the Mahindra XUV 7XO instead. It is also a five-star safety-rated vehicle and uses a smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic. However, fuel efficiency from the petrol engine in the city will be lower, and its larger size means it is not as easy to drive in traffic.
During the test drive, crawl at 5-10kph with the AC on to judge smoothness from the gearbox, and also do an 80-100kph highway run.

Asked by: Seshan kumaron Mar 26, 2026

I am currently using a 2018 Skoda Rapid diesel automatic (top-end) with 1,75,000 km on the odometer. I drive both on highways and in the city and am now looking to upgrade to a diesel vehicle that offers good power, comfort, and safety. My budget is around โ‚น25 lakh, and I am open to both 5-seater and 7-seater SUVs. I have not driven a petrol vehicle so far. Which SUV would be a good choice for me?

Go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO Diesel AT as it fits your criteria. Coming from a Rapid diesel AT, youโ€™ll appreciate the XUV 7XOโ€™s 2.2โ€‘litre diesel engine that's refined and punchy and paired with a smooth 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. It makes for a seamless drive in the city and out on highways.

You also get the flexibility of a third row of seats, and the 7XO comes loaded with safety kit like 6 airbags, traction control and Level 2 ADAS tech. Although it hasn't been crash tested yet, the pre-facelift XUV 700 did receive a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP, which should bode well for the XUV 7XO as well. It also has a spacious and comfortable cabin that has features like a triple screen setup, panoramic sunroof and ventilated front and middle row seats.

One of my close friends wants to purchase a new vehicle with a budget of โ‚น40 lakh. He is looking at the SUV market. Can you recommend the best option?

Consider going for the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7 L diesel-AT AWD. The SUV offers a great blend of space, strong performance, AWD capability, a comfy and feature-rich cabin and safety.
The 7XO's 2.2-litre diesel engine is refined and punchy, while the 6-speed torque converter automatic is smooth, making the SUV feel at home in the city and on the highway. This Mahindra car also comes with the flexibility of a third row of seats and is loaded with modern features.
As for safety, the Mahindra XUV 7XO comes equipped with Level 2 ADAS features, and although it hasn't been crash-tested yet, the pre-facelift XUV 700 received a full 5-star rating from Global NCAP. Furthermore, Mahindra's service network is also widespread across the nation, which should give you peace of mind.

Hi team, I owned a Harrier XT Plus six months ago and am now planning to buy a new car. My budget is โ‚น10 to โ‚น15 lakh. I have shortlisted the Mahindra XUV 7XO base variant and the Roxx base. My usage is 500 to 800 km per week. Please suggest if these are good options, considering the base models, and advise on any other suggestions.

Go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO base variant. With your 500-800km/week usage, you will appreciate the better ride quality compared to the Thar Roxx.
Your usage works out to roughly 2,000-3,200km per month, so stability, ride quality and interior comfort matter more. Coming from a Tata Harrier, the XUV 7XO will feel like a step up, thanks to its improved Da Vinci suspension. The base AX trim is well-equipped with features like the HD triple-screen setup, a six-speaker audio system and cruise control, which is more than what you get on the base Thar Roxx. In terms of powertrains too, the XUV 7XOโ€™s petrol and diesel engines are more powerful than those in the Roxx.
The one thing you give up is the rugged appeal of the Thar Roxx, but in terms of comfort and features, the XUV 7XO has a clear edge. Test drive both SUVs on the highway to compare ride quality. Also, ask the dealer to show you the base variants, as they can look and feel quite different from the top models.

Got the creta turbo petrol 1yr back but want a bigger car, is it a good financial decision to sell the creta in 6 months and idk how much I will loose in Chennai but I heard it has good resale value, and planning to buy a bigger car like 7 seater just for driving experience, is this a good decision in overall and financial point of view and what cars can I look after selling? Got the creta for 25L on road.

Purely financially, it isnโ€™t optimal to sell your car so soon, as 12-18-month-old cars take the sharpest depreciation hit. Expect a resale value of approximately Rs 20 lakh for your outgoing car - a financial hit of around 20 percent.

If you still wish to satisfy your itch to upgrade to a larger car, consider the Mahindra XUV 7XO. It is thoroughly modern, and itโ€™s a genuine size upgrade over your Hyundai Creta with a punchier engine, and the nicest drive in this class. Of course, it isn't the most spacious 7-seater out there; space in the third row is tight, but for occasional use it does the job.

If you plan to use all three rows regularly, you could even opt for the Tata Safari. It is more spacious than the Mahindra, and its road presence is great too.

Hi, I am buying a new car, but Iโ€™m confused between the Tata Safari Adventure X Plus petrol automatic, Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7 petrol automatic, and Tata Safari Accomplished petrol automatic.

Between your choices, the Mahindra XUV 7XO offers better value for your money. In terms of performance, the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine in the XUV 7XO has a definite edge over the Safariโ€™s 1.5-litre turbo-petrol. In AX7 trim, it is also better equipped than the Adventure X trim of the Safari and is almost on par with the Accomplished trim at a significantly lower price.
It also offers superior ride quality. The Safari does have a slightly more comfortable third row, but if this is not a priority for you, then the XUV 7XO is the better choice.

Hi, Iโ€™m planning to buy a new car in Delhi NCR. The car will be mostly used in the city, with occasional highway drives. There are some tax benefits if I buy a car with an engine larger than 1.6L. What recommendations can I get in that segment? My requirements are ride quality, safety, and reliability.

For your requirement of a car with a large engine, we would suggest going for the Mahindra XUV 7XO turbo petrol. It comes with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, which is strong and effortless for both city and highway use. More importantly, it offers a very comfortable ride and excellent high-speed stability, which suits your mixed usage well. It also has a strong focus on safety and build, along with a spacious and premium cabin.
The only thing to keep in mind is that it is a larger car, so it may take some time to get used to it in tight city conditions.

I have booked the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7L AWD diesel automatic. My running will be very low, with drives only on weekends for about 150 km. Should I buy it, as AWD is only available in diesel?

The choice of an AWD or 2WD car really comes down to the kind of terrain you intend to drive on, and not really the distance. If you will venture off onto some trails and rough off-road areas, the AWD makes sense.
The AWD system in the Mahindra XUV 7XO is a torque-on-demand system that automatically delivers torque to the rear wheels in loose and slippery conditions, such as muck and snow. There is also a 'LOCK' mode, which ensures that power is always going to the rear wheels. This can be used when driving over a continuously slippery terrain. If you are in this mode, remember to keep speeds low as this system is not designed for on-road high speeds and automatically switches to 'AUTO' mode at speeds above 80kph. Thus, if you are not really going to benefit from the AWD system, its best avoided and opt for the regular two-wheel drive model instead.
Also, since your driving is limited, the petrol AT suits occasional use better as short trips under 10-15km often donโ€™t let a BS6 diesel fully warm up, which can make DPF regeneration inconsistent. However, if your 150 km weekend drives involve a highway run, like with a continuous stretch of about 80km and speeds around 60kph then you should not have a problem with the DPF.

Hi Autocar Team, I currently own a 2012 Hyundai Verna Fluidic diesel manual and have clocked around 2.2 lakh km. I am now planning to buy an additional car as an upgrade. I have shortlisted the Mahindra XUV700 AX7 diesel manual and the Renault Duster 1.3 turbo petrol manual. I recently test-drove the XUV700 diesel automatic and was impressed with its cabin space and ride quality. I intend to keep the new car for around 15 years and am specifically looking for a driver-focused car as an upgrade from my Verna. Could you please suggest which of these would be the better choice for my needs?

We would suggest going for the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel manual. The biggest reason is that it feels like a proper upgrade in every sense. It is a larger, more spacious car, with a more premium cabin and a very comfortable ride, which you have already experienced in your test drive.

More importantly, the diesel engine suits what you are used to with your Verna. It offers strong low-end torque and relaxed cruising, which makes it feel effortless on highways and more satisfying to drive over long distances. Over a long ownership period, diesel also tends to be more efficient for regular highway use.

The Renault Duster 1.3 turbo petrol, on the other hand, is a good driverโ€™s car. It will feel lighter and easier to drive, especially in tighter city conditions. However, while the turbo petrol is enjoyable, it wonโ€™t give you the same sense of punch as the Mahindra larger 2 litre diesel, or the same space and long-distance comfort as the XUV 7XO.

We would still urge you to test drive the new Duster before taking a final call, but as an overall upgrade, the XUV 7XO is the stronger choice.

Hello Autocar Team, I am planning to buy a new car. My monthly running will be around 500 km, and I also have a second home that is connected by a 1 km stretch of rough, unpaved (kuccha) road. At times, when the entire family travels together, we require seating for up to 7 people. Considering these requirements, would the Kia Carens Clavis be a suitable option for my needs, or should I look at other alternatives?

For your requirement, the Kia Carens is actually a very good fit, and yes, it makes sense to consider it. Your usage is quite low at around 500 km per month, so a petrol automatic or manual is the right choice. Diesel is not required and may not suit such low running.

The biggest reason the Carens works for you is the flexibility of 7 seats. It is also a comfortable car, especially for family usage. The ride quality is well-suited for city and highway driving, and the second and third rows are usable, which is important in your case.

For your 1 km kuccha road, the Carens can handle it without any issues as long as you drive carefully. The suspension is compliant enough for mild rough roads, but it is not a hardcore SUV. So you will need to go slowly over bad patches.

If you want something more rugged with better ground clearance, you can also consider the Tata Safari. It is better suited for rough roads and has a stronger SUV stance. While it is not as flexible or practical as the Carens as a 7-seater, it is still decent for family use. It is also a better 7-seater than something like the Mahindra XUV 7XO, where the fixed middle row makes the third row less flexible and more cramped.

Go for the Kia Carens if your priority is comfort, space and flexibility for family use. Consider the Tata Safari if you want better rough-road ability and a more rugged feel, but with some compromise on third-row practicality.
