Hello Autocar Team, I am planning to buy a new car. My monthly running will be around 500 km, and I also have a second home that is connected by a 1 km stretch of rough, unpaved (kuccha) road. At times, when the entire family travels together, we require seating for up to 7 people. Considering these requirements, would the Kia Carens Clavis be a suitable option for my needs, or should I look at other alternatives?

For your requirement, the Kia Carens is actually a very good fit, and yes, it makes sense to consider it. Your usage is quite low at around 500 km per month, so a petrol automatic or manual is the right choice. Diesel is not required and may not suit such low running.

The biggest reason the Carens works for you is the flexibility of 7 seats. It is also a comfortable car, especially for family usage. The ride quality is well-suited for city and highway driving, and the second and third rows are usable, which is important in your case.

For your 1 km kuccha road, the Carens can handle it without any issues as long as you drive carefully. The suspension is compliant enough for mild rough roads, but it is not a hardcore SUV. So you will need to go slowly over bad patches.

If you want something more rugged with better ground clearance, you can also consider the Tata Safari. It is better suited for rough roads and has a stronger SUV stance. While it is not as flexible or practical as the Carens as a 7-seater, it is still decent for family use. It is also a better 7-seater than something like the Mahindra XUV 7XO, where the fixed middle row makes the third row less flexible and more cramped.

Go for the Kia Carens if your priority is comfort, space and flexibility for family use. Consider the Tata Safari if you want better rough-road ability and a more rugged feel, but with some compromise on third-row practicality.

Looking for a 7-seater with good third-row space, although most of the time the third row will remain folded and be used for my labrador and, occasionally, luggage. I need a car that must have good space across all three rows, front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree camera, at least low double-digit fuel efficiency and it should not feel underpowered with a full load. My usage will be occassionally highway drives of 300-500 km trips, along with moderate city usage of a maximum of 400 km per month. My current car has covered 35,000 km in 2.5 years, most of which are highway runs. I am considering Kia Clavis HTK+ as it is feature-loaded and comfortable, but the Petrol Turbo AT is quite thirsty, and I have concerns about the DCT in bumper-to-bumper traffic, along with safety concerns. Another car that I am considering is Tata Safari Petrol AT but there are customer complaints regarding quality issues and the new engine. I have also shortlisted XUV7X0 as it is powerful and good to drive, but the third row feels impractical and the fuel efficiency is quite poor. Now I am considering trying the Toyota Hycross non-hybrid as well. Please let me know your thoughts.

Your use is mostly long highway runs with the third row folded for your Labrador, plus a clear need for space in all three rows, parking aids and a 360 camera, and you don’t want it to feel weak when fully loaded. In that situation, the Toyota Innova Hycross 2.0 petrol automatic (non-hybrid) 8-seater is the one from your list that fits best overall. Its third row is the roomiest here, and when you fold it, you get a long, flat floor that is easy for a big dog and luggage. The CVT automatic, makes city work easy, but on the highway it has to work a bit hard to build up speed. Keep speeds steady, and you should see double-digit fuel efficiency on the highway, which matches your requirement.A couple of watch‑outs. The non‑hybrid Hycross does not get a factory 360 camera, and front sensors are limited to higher trims, so you may need a dealer‑fit 360 setup to meet that must‑have. The Mahindra XUV 7XO AX3 diesel-manual fits your brief best. It has the roomiest cabin of your list and is the only one with three-row seating. Of course, with the last row folded, its boot is generous for luggage. On the highway, it feels steady and calm, rides bumps well, and the diesel is refined and both, punchy and efficient. Ground clearance and its inherent toughness make it capable of tackling light trails and rough roads.

I own a Honda City 4th Generation and have been getting an average fuel efficiency of 16.1 km/l over 85,000 km. Would it be worth installing a CNG kit to improve the mileage further? Please suggest.

With the kind of mileage you are already seeing from your 4th generation Honda City, I would not rush to fit a CNG kit. Around 16 kpl over 85,000 km is actually a healthy real world figure for a petrol sedan, and since the City is known for its smoothness and refinement, adding an aftermarket CNG kit will inevitably change the character of the car. Honda does not offer a factory CNG option for the City, so any retrofit will be third party, which means compromises in boot space, some loss in outright performance and the added variable of installation quality and long term reliability. Honda also recommends using fuel that meets the vehicle specifications, and aftermarket modifications can complicate warranty or support considerations on newer cars.A CNG conversion only starts making strong financial sense if your running is very high and you plan to keep the car for several more years to recover the kit cost. If your annual usage is moderate, the payback period can be longer than expected. The only real case for going CNG here is if fuel cost reduction is your absolute top priority. Otherwise, given how well your City is already performing, I would leave it as is and enjoy the refinement rather than fixing something that is not really broken.

With four passengers, a fully loaded boot, the AC running, and driving conditions that include broken roads, ghats, and highways, which car performs better, the Citroen C3X Turbo AT or the Skoda Kylaq AT? If possible, please provide a back-to-back comparison review as well.

Both perform very well for your requirements, but overall, the Skoda Kylaq is the better choice. The Citroen C3 X has a slightly comfier ride quality, its AC performance is very strong, and its 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine is quite punchy. However, the Kylaq's 1.0 TSI engine is more powerful, and the 6-speed automatic gearbox has been tuned for even greater responses. As such, it will feel more eager on ghats and highways. It too has excellent suspension and absorbs bumps and broken roads well. Moreover, the Kylaq sits in a segment above and hence offers more space in the back seat and the boot, which will be useful for your passengers and luggage. Moreover, the build quality is stronger, the interior feels more upmarket, and though it may be more expensive, there are more features on offer than in the Citroen. Hence, we recommend that you go with the Skoda.
