Hi Autocar Team, I currently own a 2012 Hyundai Verna Fluidic diesel manual and have clocked around 2.2 lakh km. I am now planning to buy an additional car as an upgrade. I have shortlisted the Mahindra XUV700 AX7 diesel manual and the Renault Duster 1.3 turbo petrol manual. I recently test-drove the XUV700 diesel automatic and was impressed with its cabin space and ride quality. I intend to keep the new car for around 15 years and am specifically looking for a driver-focused car as an upgrade from my Verna. Could you please suggest which of these would be the better choice for my needs?

We would suggest going for the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel manual. The biggest reason is that it feels like a proper upgrade in every sense. It is a larger, more spacious car, with a more premium cabin and a very comfortable ride, which you have already experienced in your test drive.

More importantly, the diesel engine suits what you are used to with your Verna. It offers strong low-end torque and relaxed cruising, which makes it feel effortless on highways and more satisfying to drive over long distances. Over a long ownership period, diesel also tends to be more efficient for regular highway use.

The Renault Duster 1.3 turbo petrol, on the other hand, is a good driver’s car. It will feel lighter and easier to drive, especially in tighter city conditions. However, while the turbo petrol is enjoyable, it won’t give you the same sense of punch as the Mahindra larger 2 litre diesel, or the same space and long-distance comfort as the XUV 7XO.

We would still urge you to test drive the new Duster before taking a final call, but as an overall upgrade, the XUV 7XO is the stronger choice.

I’m looking to buy a 7-seater SUV and currently have two options shortlisted: the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX Petrol and the Tata Safari Pure Plus Petrol. I’m not very concerned about features, bells and whistles, or premium interiors. My main priorities are engine performance, long-term engine reliability, reliability with low usage, mechanical durability, ownership experience, highway stability, and comfort. My running is extremely low, but I occasionally do a ~1,500 km continuous highway trip. Between the XUV 7XO 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and the Safari 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, which one would you choose specifically for performance and long-term reliability? Also, are there any other SUVs I should consider in a similar price range?

Go for the XUV 7XO AX petrol. It is the better fit for your priorities. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol is a proven engine with a strong ownership track record, and delivers significantly better performance than the Safari’s 1.5-litre turbo-petrol. I am looking for a car with good safety ratings and must-have features, along with high ground clearance. My average monthly running is around 700-800 km, mostly in heavy traffic, with a mix of city and highway driving due to work requirements. I also travel late at night and on weekends to Virar. I would prefer a 7-seater, but I am also open to a 5-seater if it has proper rear-seat space. I am upgrading from a 2021 Renault Kwid AMT and am strictly on a budget of up to Rs. 18 lakh; although I can stretch it by another Rs. 2 lakh if required.

I am confused between the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7 petrol automatic and the Mahindra Scorpio N Z8S petrol automatic. I am based in Bangalore and would mainly use the car on weekends, covering around 20km per outing, which works out to roughly 100km a month. I would also take occasional long trips, bringing the estimated annual usage to around 3,000km. We are a family of five, but our extended family occasionally joins us, taking the total to seven people. That is why I am looking for a seven-seater. I really like the Scorpio N for its looks and legacy, while the XUV 7XO appeals to me for its technology and features. Given my usage and requirements, which one would be the better choice?

Though both are Mahindra cars, they are quite different in character. The Scorpio N Z8S Petrol AT has undeniable road presence and a legacy that goes back over two decades, so it is easy to understand why it appeals to you. Its body-on-frame construction also makes it the tougher, more rugged choice, especially if your regular driving involves poor roads or occasional off-road use.However, for the usage you have described, the XUV 7XO AX7 Petrol AT would be the better fit. With only around 3,000km a year, mostly short weekend trips in Bengaluru and a few longer family journeys, you are likely to appreciate its more modern, car-like driving manners and greater everyday comfort. It feels easier to drive, more stable at highway speeds and less cumbersome in the city than the Scorpio N.The XUV 7XO also has the advantage on technology, cabin ambience and overall refinement. Its ride is more composed and its handling feels more predictable, while the Scorpio N can feel bouncier and more top-heavy, particularly when driven briskly or with a full load. For a family of five, both will work well, but the XUV’s cabin feels more premium and the third row though best kept for occasional use is better in the XUV 7XO as well.Choose the Scorpio N if its design, image and rugged character genuinely matter more to you, or if your long trips often involve badly broken roads. But if you want the more rounded family SUV, with better comfort, technology and on-road behaviour, the XUV 7XO is the one to go for.

I have been using Honda City manual for the last 21 years. Now, I want a car with automatic transmission for city running mostly. My average running is around 1000km a month. Can you suggest whether I should buy Seltos, Creta, Kushaq or Elevate?

Given your usage of around 1,000 km a month, mostly in the city, the priority should be a smooth and reliable automatic transmission, good ride comfort and ease of ownership. The Kia Seltos IVT is the most natural recommendation here. The IVT gearbox is also very smooth, and the Seltos feels more premium and feature-rich than the competition. Alternatively, consider the Honda Elevate. The CVT is exceptionally smooth in stop-start traffic, Honda’s ownership experience is proven, and the car is simple, reliable and easy to live with.The Skoda Kushaq is the driver’s choice, with a more engaging driving experience, but in city running, that doesn't matter much. The Hyundai Creta is a good all-rounder, but it is due for a full model change in 2027, which makes the Seltos and Elevate stronger recommendations at this point.

I am a lady driver and drive around 65 km every day on the expressway. Twice a month, I also drive in the city and traffic. I am currently driving a Celerio, but it is 9 years old, so I am looking for a change. My budget is Rs. 10-12 lakh.

For your usage, the Skoda Kylaq is a good upgrade. Your 65 km daily expressway run means you need a car that is stable at speed and comfortable over long distances. The Kylaq delivers that very well. At your budget, you could get a lower-spec automatic, which would make it easy to drive in city traffic, which matters for your twice-a-month urban runs. The automatic gearbox is a torque converter, so its shifts are very smooth and it is very reliable too. The only possible downside is that fuel efficiency is not going to be very high, and given your high daily running, this is something that might bother you. If so, opt for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx 1.2L, which is also good at higher speeds and would be more fuel efficient. The auto box in this case is an AMT, which would not be as smooth, but this would only be a bit of a bother in city traffic and not on steady highway cruising.

Hey, We are planning to buy a sub-4-metre SUV, and our main requirement is good suspension for Bengaluru’s pothole-filled roads, especially as my wife is pregnant. We have shortlisted the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Mahindra XUV 3XO, and Tata Nexon. Which one would you recommend for our requirements? I was also considering a larger SUV like the Honda Elevate, but a well-equipped variant costs around Rs. 18 lakh on-road, which is beyond my budget. Could you suggest some good options in both categories? I can stretch my budget up to around Rs. 15 lakh on-road if required.

Given your priorities, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is the best fit. It has the most comfortable ride in the segment, with a suspension that deals with broken roads and potholes better than the Brezza or Nexon. The wide rear seat and good cabin space will also make a difference for your wife and family. The Brezza is the more reliable long-term ownership proposition, but its ride is not as plush as the 3XO. The Nexon is a good all-rounder, but the 3XO has the edge on ride comfort and rear seat space.On the Honda Elevate, it is a solid, reliable SUV with a comfortable ride, but at Rs 18 lakh on-road for the well-equipped variants, it is not worth stretching your budget for. The 3XO gives you a better ride and more features for less money.Overall, the 3XO is the best balance of ride comfort, space and value for your requirements. Go for the petrol automatic variant for the smoothest city driving experience.
