We like

  • Feature-loaded

  • Nice to drive

We don't like

  • Rear seat space

  • Top versions are expensive

The Kia Sonet facelift refreshes the compact SUVโ€™s look without changing its bones. The front gains a larger grille, new L-shaped LED headlamps and DRLs and redesigned bumpers that lend a bolder, more premium presence than before. At the rear, vertically oriented LED tail-lamps connected by a light bar align the Sonet with Kiaโ€™s latest family design language. X Line variants carry exclusive matte grey and black accents and distinct bumpers.

Underneath, the Sonet retains its existing chassis and powertrain options. There are no major mechanical revisions, though Kia has reintroduced the 6-speed manual with the diesel engine โ€” a nod to enthusiasts and traditionalists in the compact SUV class.

Inside, the cabin remains familiar but gains a few important updates. A new 10.25-inch digital driverโ€™s display sits alongside the central touchscreen, giving the Sonet a more contemporary and upscale dash. The layout and materials are well built for the segment, and switchgear feels neatly arranged.

Rear seat space has been marginally improved with scooped-out front seatbacks and a slightly longer, lower squab, but it remains relatively tight compared with some rivals. That said, the 385-litre boot is commendable for this class.

Powertrain options are carried over. The Sonet is offered with a 1.2-litre NA petrol, a 1.0-litre turbo petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel, each paired with various manuals or automatics. Kiaโ€™s 1.0-litre turbo still delivers lively performance for its size, though the 7-speed DCT can be erratic at low revs, especially in city traffic. The diesel automatic remains the sweet spot for the Sonet, blending smooth shifts with strong mid-range torque and quiet refinement.

Both powertrains refine well at cruising speeds, with noise kept in check unless the engine is pushed hard. The diesel in particular is among the quieter units in the class.

While no instrumented fuel economy figures were published, mixed driving suggested the turbo petrol can achieve over 10 kmpl regularly in varied conditions, and the diesel creeps up to around 15 kmpl in similar use. These figures reflect typical real-world returns for a modern compact SUV with petrol and diesel engines.

Ride comfort remains a weak spot. Combined with a relatively short wheelbase and firm suspension tuning, the Sonetโ€™s ride can feel lumpy over uneven surfaces and sharper potholes. At the same time, body motions are controlled and the SUV feels tidy in corners for its size, though the steering isnโ€™t especially communicative.

The firm ride quality comes from the suspension tuning that prioritises stability, but it emphasises road imperfections โ€” especially at low speeds or on broken surfaces.

Features are the Sonetโ€™s standout trait and the facelift only strengthens this advantage. Top trims offer twin 10.25-inch screens, a 360-degree camera, ventilated seats, a 4-way powered driverโ€™s seat, wireless phone charger with ventilation, ambient lighting and connected car tech with extensive connectivity. Kiaโ€™s camera-based ADAS adds Level-1 safety functions including forward collision warning and braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, driver attention alert and more.

Safety kit also includes six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, hill assist and all-around disc brakes. Standard USB-C ports and segment-unique rear window blinds add to everyday convenience.

Priced from around โ‚น7.99 lakh to โ‚น15.69 lakh (ex-showroom), the Sonet facelift still spans a wide range of options and remains competitive against rivals such as the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Hyundai Venue. Its features list and powertrain breadth are compelling, especially in top trims where ADAS, digital screens and connected tech outshine many competitors.

While rear seat space and ride comfort lag some rivals, the Sonetโ€™s modern tech, strong refinement and comprehensive safety suite make it an appealing all-round compact SUV for buyers who prioritise equipment and versatility.

Recently, I sold my 2012 i20 Magna, which I bought 4 years ago. Fixed my budget to 5 lakhs and looked for a car in second hand market. Then my friends and relatives suggested me to go for a new car. I didn't get any for my budget. So, I increased my budget to 8 lakhs. I've shortlisted Exter, Punch, Magnite and Citroen. First, I visited the TATA showroom. I'm 6'1" tall, and my legs were colliding with the steering wheel, and it was the same with the Altroz. I was shown Nexon, which is more than 10 lakhs, so I went for my other choices. Next, I visited Hyundai, I checked the i20 and the Exter. Same issue with the i20, and I was comfortable with the Exter. So I did not check Nissan and Citroen. The showroom I visited did not offer a Test drive, but the other showroom (PeeYesYem) I enquired offered a test drive and followed up. Then I searched for Cons in Exter, the main thing that can be found on the internet is rear suspension and Body roll. So I waited, then came 3XO into the picture and I seems worth for money. I picked 3XO RevX M, and I visited 3 showrooms, but none of them offered a test drive. Initially, they will ask for arranging the test drive, and then they will arrange it. They don't follow up. One of the showrooms I visited twice, and asked for a test drive. Still, they didn't provide. I gave feedback on the official website as well still no response. The attitude is very poor from the Mahindra sales team across the showroom, so I took a step back. My mind is stuck between Exter SX and 3XO RevXM. Can you please suggest one from above or any other car around 10L? Requirement: Mileage and Value for money. Want to hold for the long term. Thanks a lot!!!

Between your two choices, the Mahindra XUV 3XO offers more for your money. It sits a segment above the Hyundai Exter and therefore has more interior space. That said, only go ahead with the Mahindra if the showroom is willing to offer a proper test drive. In terms of the powertrain, the XUV 3XOโ€™s turbo-petrol engine offers stronger performance than the Exterโ€™s naturally aspirated unit, while ride and handling are also superior. While you will be giving up some creature comforts compared to the Hyundai, such as a dashcam and keyless entry, the XUV 3XO is still very well equipped for the price. In our real-world tests, the XUV 3XO managed 10.4kpl in the city and 14.9kpl on the highway, which is actually better than what we recorded in the Exter. What you do give up is boot space. Despite its larger size, the XUV 3XO actually has a smaller boot than the Exter. If that is a concern, then consider the Kia Sonet HTK 1.2-litre petrol MT instead. On the test drive, check if the clutch and shifter action are to your liking, and whether performance and refinement meet your expectations.

I am confused about choosing between the Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue for city driving. My monthly usage is around 800 to 900 km. Which SUV and model should I choose? I want an automatic variant. I currently own a 2019 Honda City automatic, which I plan to sell. For highway driving, I have a 2023 Skoda Octavia.

Go for the Hyundai Venue with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol DCT combination; it is a good fit as a city car, with compact dimensions, light steering and good visibility making it easy to drive and park. It is also based on a newer platform than the Kia Sonet.Since your usage is mainly in the city and limited to around 800-900km a month, performance from the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol is more than adequate, and the DCT is generally smooth in operation, with only occasional hesitation. Ride quality has also improved compared to the previous generation, with better low-speed bump absorption. The cabin feels modern and well-built, and the top trims get a crisp and responsive infotainment system. The one thing you give up compared to the Kia Sonet is boot space; the Venue offers about 350 litres, whereas the Sonet gives roughly 392 litres, so airport runs with three to four bags may need some planning. If you need that extra luggage room or prefer the styling of the Sonet, then go for it instead. It uses the same powertrains, so it will feel similar in that regard, but the ride quality is on the firm side.Test drive both over some rough patches to see which you prefer. Also check for any jerkiness from the DCT when driving slowly or during downshifts.

I am planning to buy the Kia Sonet 1.0-litre turbo petrol HTK(O) DCT. My monthly running will be around 300 km, mostly within Delhi city. However, I have come across several videos mentioning issues with turbo engines and DCT transmissions. This has made me concerned about long-term reliability and suitability for city driving. Alternatively, I am considering the Maruti Suzuki Fronx AMT. Could you please advise whether the Sonet turbo DCT is a good choice for my usage, or if the Fronx AMT would be a better and more reliable option?

For your usage of around 300 km per month, purely in city conditions, it makes more sense to go for a simpler and more fuss-free setup rather than a turbo petrol with a DCT.The Kia Sonet 1.0 turbo DCT is a good car. But this combination is better suited for higher usage and mixed driving, where you can actually enjoy its performance. In heavy city traffic, especially in Delhi, DCT gearboxes can feel a bit sensitive in slow crawling conditions, and with your low running, you wonโ€™t really benefit from what it offers. In comparison, the Maruti Fronx 1.2 AMT is a simpler and more reliable option for your kind of usage. It is easier to live with in the long run, especially since your running is low and mostly in stop-go traffic. While the AMT is not as smooth as a DCT and performance is modest, it is perfectly adequate for daily city use.Overall, for your usage, the Fronx AMT is the more practical and stress-free choice. The Sonet turbo DCT makes sense only if you specifically want better performance and are comfortable with a more complex setup.

Which of the following is the best option, considering mainly city driving, daily 30km, once-a-month highway drives, and a family of four: Skoda Kylaq, Venue, Citroen Basalt, Maruti Jimny, and Kia Sonet.

For your usage of mainly city driving (30km daily) with occasional highway trips and a family of four, we would suggest going for the Skoda Kylaq. The Kylaq offers a comfortable ride, a spacious cabin for four adults, and the torque converter automatic is smooth, which makes it very easy to drive in city traffic. It is also compact enough, so parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces wonโ€™t be an issue. On highways, too, it feels stable and enjoyable to drive. The Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue are good options for the city as well, but both use a DCT automatic, which is not as smooth at low speeds as a torque converter, especially in stop-and-go traffic. The Citroen Basalt is actually great value for money and offers excellent cabin space, making it very comfortable for a family. However, it is a larger car, so it wonโ€™t be as easy to park and manoeuvre in the city. If you prioritise space and comfort over ease of driving, it is definitely worth considering. The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is not suitable for your needs. It is primarily an off-roader, has heavier steering, and is not as easy to drive in the city. The ride is also bouncy, and overall, practicality is limited for family use.

Dear Autocar Team, I am currently using a Tata Altroz XT Petrol (2022). Due to my height (6.2 feet), I am required to push the driver's seat to its maximum extent, which results in restricted visibility on the right side while driving. I am now planning to purchase a new car, and after comparing options such as Nexon, XUV 3XO, and Hyundai Venue, I have shortlisted the Kia Sonet HTK(O) Diesel (Manual), as it appears to offer good value for money. However, I have some concerns regarding rear seat space and overall driving comfort for my height. In this regard, I request your expert advice on whether this would be a suitable choice, or if there are better alternatives available within an on-road budget of โ‚น12 lakhs. My usage is predominantly city driving (around 70%), with occasional highway travel (approximately 30%). Most of the time I drive alone, and occasionally with my wife. I would greatly appreciate your guidance and recommendations. Thanking you in advance.

While the Kia Sonet Diesel HTK (O) is a good value-for-money car, it may not be the best choice for your height. At 6.2 feet, you will likely have to push the seat all the way back, just like in your Tata Altroz. In that position, the Sonetโ€™s cabin can feel a bit tight, and visibility issues may still persist. Also, once the driver's seat is pushed fully back, the rear seat space becomes quite limited, which may not be ideal even for occasional use.Instead, we would suggest looking at the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel. It offers a wider cabin and more driver space, which will make a noticeable difference for your height. Even with the seat pushed all the way back, there is still usable space in the rear, making it a more practical choice overall. The wide cabin also makes it a genuine 5-seater, unlike many compact SUVs.The diesel engine is punchy and enjoyable to drive, and it works well for both city and highway usage. It feels strong in the mid-range, which makes overtaking easier and driving more effortless. The only real drawback is the boot space, which is on the smaller side compared to rivals, especially for larger luggage . If you frequently travel with a lot of bags, this is something you should keep in mind.
