Hi, I am planning to buy my first car. Previously, I used my family car, a Maruti Ciaz, for 10 years. I am looking for an automatic, fuel-efficient car with low maintenance. My driving is 70% in the city and 30% on the highway. My budget is around โ‚น15 lakh. For family comfort, could you please help me with this?

Since you have been using a Maruti Suzuki Ciaz for the past 10 years, it is important to note that at a Rs 15 lakh budget, nothing will really feel like an upgrade in terms of space, especially for the rear seat.
Ideally, we would have recommended the Hyundai Verna, the HX6 IVT automatic variant, which has just been updated. It is a comfortable and spacious sedan and even the mid-spec variant comes with good features. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is refined, and the IVT transmission is silky smooth, making it ideal for your city commutes. However, it is about Rs 1.5 lakh above your stated budget, so you would need to stretch slightly.
If you want to stay strictly within your Rs 15 lakh budget, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol automatic is a good option. The engine and transmission combination work well for city driving, and the car is spacious enough for four adults, making it comfortable for family use.

Hi, I am looking to buy a used automatic car in Delhi NCR that is fun to drive. I am okay with it being relatively easy to maintain. Should I buy an automatic EcoSport, a Verna, or a Honda City? I am really confused. I plan to own the car for five years.

Without knowing your budget, it's hard to guide you to the best option for your needs. However, among the shortlisted models, we'd avoid the Ford EcoSport. It is a solid product, and Ford does have a functioning service network, but spare parts may not be as easily available in the future.
The Honda City and Hyundai Verna are good options, but we're leaning towards the City for a few reasons. Hondas typically run trouble-free over a long period, provided you take care with routine service and maintenance. The 1.5 i-VTEC engine is also bulletproof and delivers more exciting performance than a Verna petrol.

I currently own a Honda Brio and plan to upgrade to a Cโ€‘segment midโ€‘size sedan in April 2026. Iโ€™m considering the Honda City e:HEV and the Hyundai Verna, both of which are expected to receive facelifts this year. Do you know if the facelifted models will be available for booking in April 2026?

The Honda City eHEV is the strong-hybrid version of the City. It is expensive, but if your running is on the higher side, you can take advantage of its high economy. However, the City is showing its age now, and the interior, although spacious, does not feel up-to-date.
The other option would be the Skoda Slavia, which will also get a facelift soon and will feature an updated equipment list. We would recommend holding on until the Slavia facelift is unveiled so you can make a more informed decision.
The Hyundai Verna facelift is expected a little later, around June 2026, and is also rumoured to feature a strong-hybrid powertrain. That could be worth waiting for if you are thinking of buying a strong-hybrid sedan.

I am interested in buying the Hyundai Verna petrol version under a Rs 20 lakh budget. I am also looking for a loan to buy the car. I have a family of 6. Please suggest the best variant.

The Hyundai Verna is a great car, but for a family of six, it is not advisable to buy a five-seater. A safer option would be a six or seven-seater, even if you have small children, as they are the most vulnerable in the event of an accident. It is always best to seat them in child seats or individual seats, if they are tall enough.
Within your budget, you can consider the Kia Carens Clavis HTK+ Turbo Petrol with the DCT transmission. It is a well-equipped car with a good mix of premium and essential features. It is also comfortable across all three rows, and the ride quality is pliant and comfortable.
Another premium option within your budget is the Hyundai Alcazar. While its third row is not as comfortable as the Clavisโ€™s, it feels easier to drive in traffic due to its slightly smaller dimensions and is powered by the same turbo petrol engine.
However, within your budget, you will only get the Prestige manual variant. The DCT automatic will push the price slightly over Rs 21 lakh.

We presently own a 2014 Honda City Diesel as our secondary car and an Innova Crysta Diesel as our primary vehicle. Our usage is approximately 60% city and 40% highway. We are considering purchasing a new secondary car; however, upgrade options for sedan enthusiasts are quite limited. Kindly suggest suitable new car options within a budget of โ‚น20 lakhs.

You're right, the choice of sedans available in the market today has dwindled considerably in recent years, and the midsize sedan segment is being propped up by just four candidates. The good news is that all four of them are expected to be updated in 2026, which should breathe some life into them in the form of updated looks and more features, and whichever car you choose, we recommend waiting until the updated version is launched.
If you're a fan of the Honda City's no-nonsense approach, you'll like the new one, which will feel like a step up from your 2014 model, especially in terms of space and features. However, its single-engine option is limiting, and it is not as fun to drive as before.
The Hyundai Verna is far more versatile and gets an even longer list of features, but it too errs on the safe and unexciting side, even with its 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. Your best bets are the Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus, which, with the facelifts, will get a much-needed features upgrade.
They are excellent to drive, yet spacious and comfortable, and a particular highlight is their punchy TSI turbo petrol engines. Choosing between them is a matter of preference, as they are the same car underneath, but either of these is what you should choose.

I want to buy a sedan with good ground clearance due to the rains in Mumbai, and also don't want a car with high maintenance. I was considering the Skoda Slavia or the Hyundai Verna. Please suggest.

Given your requirements, you should consider the Hyundai Verna. The Skoda Slavia does have a higher ground clearance of 179mm, compared to the Verna's 165mm ground clearance. However, in terms of maintenance, the Hyundai car should be easier and more affordable. The Verna also comes with a better 3-year/unlimited km standard warranty compared to the Slavia's 3 year/1,00,000km standard warranty.

I am confused between the Hyundai Verna SX Plus IVT and the Volkswagen Virtus 1.0 Topline automatic. Please help.

In a nutshell, the Hyundai Verna IVT makes for a friendlier city car, while the Volkswagen Virtus AT is the more exciting car to drive.
The Verna has a smoother gearbox, which works very well with the engine at typical city speeds. It works well as a highway car too, so long as easygoing driving is your style. The Verna also packs in more features for less money.
The Volkswagen Virtus has a punchier engine and feels more enthusiastic to drive. Its 6-speed gearbox is also sporty in its shifts. However, the engine-gearbox does have a tendency to lurch forward at crawling speeds, and this is something you have to be mindful of.
Do note, the Virtus 1.0 is due to get a new 8-speed automatic gearbox later this year and could be worth waiting for. The model will also see feature additions.

I have a budget of around โ‚น30 lakh and am more inclined towards a sedan rather than an SUV, but currently there are no good options. Are there any expected this year?

Sadly, there are no all-new Rs 25-30 lakh sedans lined up for launch this year. However, slightly lower down the price ladder, we will see the launch of updated versions of the Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus over the year.

There's way more choice for the same budget in SUVs with options spanning petrol, diesel, hybrid and EV powertrains as well as with two and three rows of seating, and 4x2 and 4x4.

Iโ€™m looking to upgrade my vehicle within six months and my budget is โ‚น25 lakh. I am a sedan lover. Please suggest a car that is value for money, offers good mileage, has moderate maintenance costs, and strong safety standards.

Unfortunately, there are very few sedan options available today, and between Rs 20 to 30 lakh, you would only find the Honda City Hybrid. The City will meet your requirements of good mileage and low maintenance cost, however this variant isn't really value for money at all.

Thus, we would suggest you consider the Hyundai Verna instead. The car may not be as fuel-efficient as the Honda, but it is efficient enough.

We put the 1.5 litre turbo petrol auto through our standard test cycle, and it returned 10.76kpl in the city and 16.05kpl on the highway. The Verna is also well equipped and offers good value, and will be reliable and low on maintenance costs. It also secured a 5-star rating in the GNCAP crash tests.

I want to buy the Hyundai Verna Turbo variant, but I am confused about whether I should buy it in March 2026 or wait for the facelift, which is expected to launch around Q2 2026.

Buying a car close to a facelift has both pros and cons. Facelifts usually bring cosmetic updates to the exterior, which means the car you buy may start looking dated sooner. You may also miss out on new technology or equipment introduced with the update. Sometimes, these are minor, but in many cases, they do improve comfort and convenience.
That said, facelifts often come with a price hike. A clear advantage of buying just before the update is that you avoid paying more for what is essentially the same car, often with only visual changes. Just before the launch of the newer model, manufacturers and dealers also tend to offer discounts to clear existing stock, and if inventory is available, you can negotiate a good deal.
Resale value can take a hit once the facelift arrives, but this is usually offset by the lower purchase price and discounts you receive upfront. In the end, it comes down to your priorities with the Hyundai Verna, whether you value having the latest features and design, or getting better value for money at the time of purchase.
