I currently seem inclined towards, and have almost booked, the Kia Seltos HTX Automatic with BH registration. I have two questions: Considering my usage and budget, is the Kia Seltos HTX Automatic the right choice, or are there any alternatives? With the current global fuel situation, growing discussions about alternative fuels, and increasing focus on hybrid and electric vehicles, does it still make sense to buy a petrol car this year? Or would it be wiser to wait and consider a hybrid or EV instead? Please advise.

With 80 percent city driving and occasional highway use, the Seltos petrol automatic fits well because it is spacious, comfortable, easy to drive in traffic and feels premium enough for the money. Unless you specifically want maximum fuel efficiency, there is no obvious reason to cancel that booking.On the second question, the current geopolitical tension and crude price concerns should not push you into a panic decision. Yes, India has been urging fuel conservation due to global supply uncertainty, and the government is continuing its push toward alternative fuels and electrification. But that does not mean petrol cars suddenly become bad buys this year. Petrol and hybrid cars sold today will remain usable and supported for years.The more practical decision is based on your usage. If you cannot charge at home reliably, stay with petrol or a hybrid. EV ownership without dependable home charging still needs compromise.If your usage is mostly city and you want lower running costs, a strong hybrid like the Maruti Suzuki Victoris / Grand Vitara hybrid makes a lot of sense because you get much better fuel efficiency without EV charging dependency. In fact, for your city's heavy usage, a hybrid arguably makes more sense than a pure petrol Seltos if fuel bills are a concern.

We are assuming you're comparing the Maruti Victoris ZXI O to the Grand Vitara Zeta O, both of which are similarly priced and equipped, and are powered by the same 1.5-litre petrol engine. Also, they have similar space, quality, and their driving manners are also similar. So the only difference between these cars is the way they look - the Victoris has a lighter coloured interior, which feels airier, compared to the Grand Vitara's dark brown and black colour scheme. You won't go wrong by opting for either; however, the Victoris gets our vote because it feels a bit more modern and has brighter interiors.

Both these are competent, no-nonsense cars that will meet your requirements. Also, being high-riding vehicles, ingress-egress will be easier than in your Honda City, and because you're seated higher up, visibility is also quite good. Since these cars are very similar beneath their skin, pick the one that you think looks better outside and in. You won't go wrong picking either.

In city driving, a strong hybrid runs on electric power a lot of the time without you needing to charge, so your fuel bills will drop noticeably. Do note, though, the Victoris strong hybrid will be more expensive to buy than the regular petrol versions, and it has a smaller boot thanks to the battery.However, if you have access to home charging, an electric car like the Hyundai Creta Electric makes sense. It will drop your per-km cost sharply, one overnight home charge can comfortably cover your daily run, and the smooth, quiet driving experience makes heavy traffic far less tiring than your Creta diesel. You will also appreciate the familiarity with your current Creta.

The top variants of all these cars would come at ₹20 lakh (on road) mark. There's really not much difference between the Grand Vitara and Hyryder, so pick the one that you prefer in terms of style or on which one you are getting a better deal. If you want a few more features, opt for the Victoris as you would get features like a larger touchscreen and instrument panel, a branded audio system and level-2 ADAS. However, do bear in mind that rear headroom is a bit tighter in the Victoris. Technically, it shares its platform and powertrain with the other two hybrids, so it is also powered by the 1.5 litre 3 cylinder petrol hybrid unit.

Considering you will be using the SUV in the city, it's relatively more compact and easier to drive, with lighter controls, yet doesn't give up too much in terms of space. It also has more features than the Harrier, including a three-screen setup on the dashboard in top trims. Both cars have 5-star crash test ratings from Bharat NCAP, since safety is a concern for you. The Sierra also has an edge on comfort, with the softer, more compliant suspension setup, while the Harrier feels firm, comparatively.However, being large and heavy SUVs, neither is particularly good on fuel economy, especially if you drive mostly in the city. Tata's new 1.5-litre petrol engine feels smooth and powerful in both SUVs, but in our real-world tests, returned poor figures in the Sierra. The diesel might be the better choice if fuel economy is a criterion, though beware of the additional maintenance required, such as DPF regeneration.With mostly metro-city use at 25-30 km a day and rare highway runs, a strong-hybrid like the Maruti Suzuki Victoris might make more sense. It uses far less fuel in stop-go traffic, it is very quiet and smooth at low speeds, and it is easier to park than bigger SUVs. Coming from a Honda City, you will like how calm and smooth it feels, and the ride is comfortable over broken roads. Moreover, it too has received a 5-star crash test rating from Bharat NCAP. The trade-off is space, which isn't as much as you'll find in the Harrier or Sierra, and performance, which compared to the turbo-petrol engine, isn't as strong. For your usage though, we would recommend the Victoris strong hybrid.

The e-CVT removes the usual shift shocks, so crawling through traffic feels far less jerky. Moving from a Nexon, you will also appreciate the easy step-in height, good ground clearance for speed breakers, and the clear outward visibility. Maruti’s service network in Bengaluru is excellent, and the car also covers the essential safety basics with stability control and multiple airbags.There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The hybrid battery takes up a significant amount of boot space, so it is less spacious than some other cars of this size. My family is considering the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Victoris petrol/CNG, or Hyundai Creta petrol. Our budget is 13-15 lakh. We want a reliable car for long-term ownership of around 15 years, as we are a middle-class family and cannot easily replace the car if we are not satisfied. We are also worried about the possibility of E85 petrol in the future. So we are confused whether to go for CNG. However, I have heard that CNG cars still need to start or run a few kilometres on petrol. If E85 comes, will that harm the car? Our usage is mostly in the city, with one highway trip per year.

Just as manufacturers adapted to E20, they are likely to provide solutions if higher ethanol blends are introduced. In the short term, it should not be an issue, and as you have pointed out, a CNG car will require you to have some petrol in the tank, which, if your car is not ethanol ready, is potentially more dangerous.Another option is to try a diesel car, such as the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet or Kia Syros, which, though not as spacious as the Victoris, do pack in a lot for the money. They are reasonably reliable too and should hold up well over 15 years, with mileage better than a petrol car. The trade-off, however, is that you will have to maintain the DPF by doing occasional highway runs and topping it up with AdBlue, which adds slightly to the running costs.
