I currently own a Tata Nexon XZ+ petrol manual. My daily run is about 20km. Additionally, I travel around 350km fortnightly to my parents' place. After the introduction of E20 fuel, mileage has dropped from 13-14 kmpl to 10-11 kmpl. I am planning to upgrade to a hybrid. Based on my running, could you suggest the best options below 20 lakh?

We would suggest opting for the Maruti Suzuki Victoris ZXi variant, as it falls just under Rs 20 lakh on road in Vadodara, where you are based. The Victoris is very well priced, and even though the ZXi is a mid-spec variant, it comes well-equipped with all the essential features.
More importantly, in terms of Victoris' mileage, you can expect over 20 kpl not just in the city but on the highway as well, which is almost double what you are currently getting with your Tata Nexon.
Do note that this Maruti car does not come with a spare wheel as standard and instead gets a puncture repair kit, with a space saver spare available as an optional extra. The boot space is also slightly compromised due to the hybrid battery mounted under the boot floor.

My daily running is 60km (50% highway and 50% city). I am confused between buying a Hyundai Creta diesel or an EV. My budget is ₹20 to 22 lakh. Please suggest.

The Hyundai Creta diesel is a strong option for your needs. The 1.5 litre engine is refined, offers a good balance of performance and fuel efficiency, and suits highway heavy usage well. The Creta is also spacious and comfortable for long drives.
Within your budget, you could also consider the Maruti Suzuki Victoris Hybrid. It will be significantly more fuel efficient than the Hyundai car and is a very cost-efficient choice for your running. The only downside is the smaller boot, as the battery pack eats into luggage space.
An EV is another sensible and cost-effective option, especially if you have home charging. In your budget, you can look at the Vinfast VF6 or the Tata Nexon EV.

I plan to purchase a car next June with a budget of up to ₹17 lakh on-road. Should I choose the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Tata Sierra, or the new Kia Seltos?

Without knowing further requirements, it is hard to recommend the ideal pick for you. However, we feel the New Kia Seltos will be the best pick in your budget. 

Prices will only be announced on January 2, but assuming a reasonable increase over current model prices, you should be able to get a decently equipped model within Rs 17 lakh. The Seltos has the edge over the other two with a far superior naturally-aspirated petrol engine. The Seltos also scores for space. 

The Maruti Suzuki Victoris is a sensible package and is good value. However, the dull engine and relatively small cabin mark it down. Tata's Sierra is the roomiest of the three options, but versions within your budget miss many features that you'd expect. 

The bigger issue is that the Sierra's 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine feels underpowered, and performance is disappointing.

I am planning to buy my first new car with an automatic transmission and expect to drive around 20,000 km annually for the next 10 years. It will be mainly used in Mumbai’s bumper-to-bumper traffic with daily office commutes of about 80 km, weekly family outings, and occasional long trips. I am also considering the future risk of diesel restrictions like those in Delhi NCR. While I like the Victoris' strong hybrid top trim, the rear seat comfort is a concern for my family. Although I find the Syros, Kylaq, and 3XO top trims comfortable. I am unsure about their long-term cost effectiveness - which option would be the right choice for me?

Firstly, we don’t think you should worry about diesel restrictions on new cars in Mumbai. The current diesel engines are quite clean, and if there is a ban in the future, it will only be the older diesels that will be taken off the road. 

The Maruti Suzuki Victoris hybrid would have been a good choice. But as you said and we have pointed out too in our tests, the boot space is compromised because of the hybrid batteries, and the rear seats are not very spacious. 

The other cars you have listed are all turbo-petrol petrol, so they won’t be economical and will burn a hole in your pocket if you drive 80km every day. Since you have shortlisted some compact SUVs, we suggest you look at the Hyundai Venue diesel. It has just been launched, so it's very fresh and will age well over a 10-year lifecycle, and the diesel engine is very efficient and keeps your running costs under control.

If you want something smaller but more feature-rich, you could consider the new Hyundai Venue. It gets a peppy 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. I currently own a 2019 Ecosport Diesel with approximately 50 km daily mileage. It has covered around 2 lakh km in 5 years, averaging 18 kmpl. Unfortunately, your worry about the resale value of an electric car is correct. The battery is the biggest cost in EVs, and there is no effective way for second-hand car buyers to judge the battery health; hence, they sell at a discount.
Instead, you can go for Maruti Suzuki Victoris strong hybrid, it will give you good mileage and will be in your budget too.

I am looking to buy an SUV with a budget of up to Rs 22 to 23 lakh. My must-haves are a minimum 3-star safety rating, excellent suspension, at least 13 kmpl fuel efficiency with a 60% city and 40% highway usage pattern, the ability to pre-cool or pre-heat the car before entering it, and a fuss-free ownership experience.

The Maruti Suzuki Victoris hybrid seems to fit the bill. It has been awarded 5 stars by BNCAP for its crashworthiness. Ride comfort is excellent, and it handles well, too. And with the hybrid powertrain, you can expect excellent fuel efficiency, significantly higher than 13kpl (average).
It also gets an option to pre-cool or pre-heat the vehicle, and being a Maruti Suzuki car, the ownership experience is likely to be fuss-free. Alternatively, you may consider the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder hybrid or Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara hybrid, which share the same platform and boast of similar strengths.

My wife doesn’t like the comfort of the Jimny - the seats hurt her back and neck, and she dislikes the bouncy ride on highways. She wants to sell it and get something like a Creta or an Innova for comfort in the city and smooth highway drives. I want a vehicle that can handle 4x4 duties (winter Spiti trips) and take a beating. Is there a car that can strike that balance, ideally under ₹25 lakh? We drive in the city about 75% of the time and take highway trips 25% of the time.

Yes, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny is very adept off-road, thanks to Suzuki's All-Grip Pro 4X4 system, which also features a low ratio. However, it does feel bouncy on regular roads - just like most 4X4s. Thus, we would recommend you look at the all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara / Toyota Hyryder or the Maruti Suzuki Victoris

These SUVs use Suzuki All-Grip Select, which does not have a low ratio but has a Snow mode and also allow you to lock AWD. For the winter Spiti trails, this should suffice. Moreover, these SUVs will be far better in terms of ride comfort in the city and on the highway.

I am buying my first car with a budget of Rs 10 to 12 lakh, which can be stretched to a maximum of Rs 13-14 lakh. With a budget of 13 lakhs, we would recommend the Skoda Kylaq, the Signature+ MT variant, which will give a good balance of performance, comfort, space, safety and features.
The Mahindra XUV 3XO has many features, but it scores low on real-world fuel efficiency, and you will have to stretch your budget to around 14 lakhs on road for the Maruti Suzuki Victoris VXI.
