Autocar score

We like

  • Spacious and practical interior

  • Comfortable in all three rows of seats

We don't like

  • Diesel auto lacks punch

  • Engines audible inside

The Clavis sticks to the Carens silhouette when it comes to the design but with a fresh face. The most notable change is up front where the LED headlamps get a revised design featuring the LEDs stacked in an ice-cube like housing like weโ€™ve seen on the Syros. The DRLs are now sharper and extend down into the bumper while the bumper itself is sharper and cleaner. The grille is slimmer now and overall there has been no change to the width of the car. Over to the side the wheels are new and also bigger in size at 17-inch. The design is sharp and gives the Clavis some extra height to boast. Wheelbase is identical and the lines have been carried over. At the rear the LED taillamps are conjoined with a thick light bar giving it the perception of a wider car. The bumper is sleeker like the front and there is a stop lap on the mini spoiler up top. Overall. It looks like an evolved Carens which is exactly what it was intended to do.

Like the Carens, the Clavis can also be had as a 6 seater with captain chairs for the middle row or 7 seater that features a bench. The front seats are large and supportive and also hey electric control for the driver. Height adjust however, is manual. The passenger seat misses out on power adjust but both front seats get ventilation. The dashboard has also been revised while the blue and beige theme is carried over. Youโ€™ll also notice the new steering wheel that is also seen on the Syros and the switchgear feels high quality. In the middle row of the 6 seater, the seats are comfy, can be moved forward and backward along with a fair amount of recline. The new bit however is the addition of a panoramic sunroof that opens up the cabin. As a result the AC vents have been repositioned on near the door grab handles. There is also a boss mode that allows the middle row passenger to move the front passenger seat to elevate more room. Getting into the third row is also very easy courtesy the electric one touch tumble on the left rear seat. The third row is spacious for two adults and also gets type C ports for charging and AC vents. Backrests are adjustable and one can come a comfy spot for a few hours. With three rows up, the boot is impressive at 216-litres and there is some more space under the boot floor too.
The spare wheel sits flush under the car.

The Carens Clavis gets multiple powertrain options. The best one arguably is the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol with 160hp mated to a 7-speed DCT. Itโ€™s powerful enough and while linear, never struggles for grunt. The dual-clutch automatic can be controlled via the paddle shifters too.
There is also a 1.5-litre diesel with a 6-speed manual and automatic which will be preferable for regular long distance drivers. As for the enthusiasts, the Clavis gets a 6-speed manual for the turbo-petrol engine. Gearshifts are slick and the clutch is well balanced making it an enjoyable experience. The drive modes further allow the driver to customise the powertrain performance with Sport being the most responsive and Eco being the most efficient.

Official claimed economy for the 1.5 petrol is about 15.34 kpl, the lowest among the Clavis powertrains, but because it encourages an easy-going driving style, real-world efficiency should be respectable for daily commuting.

The broader Clavis range โ€” including turbo-petrol DCT and diesel โ€” officially returns up to about 16.66 kpl (DCT) and higher figures with diesel variants. These numbers should satisfy families seeking a balance of efficiency and performance in a three-row MPV.

The suspension of the Clavis has been tweaked compared to the Carens but it retains the character with a soft setup that takes on the bumps rather well. The bigger wheels let in some thuds at low speeds, but overall it remains a comfy ride. As for handling , the Clavis does not like to attack corners. There is a fair bit of body roll in tight bends and it is best to drive it sedately.

The Clavis takes over the already well-equipped Carens and adds another layer of plushness. The 12.3 inch touchscreen and 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster sit flush in a single panel. The touchscreen is loaded with tech and gets all the essentials like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Sadly, this isnโ€™t wireless. It also gets in-built navigation, voice assist, a BOSE sound system, and an air purifier along with a crisp 360 degree camera.
Safety is also impressive with 6 airbags with ABS and EBD along with ESC. The big new addition is the level 2 ADAS that works well and can be manually controlled.

Priced between Rs 11.49 lakh to 21.49 lakh the Clavis offers a wide array of variants for different budgets. It is only slightly more expensive than the Carens which will continue to be on sale in a lower trim, presumably for fleet operators. The Clavis will aim to take the baton from the Carens and bring in more audiences to the showroom for its updated character.
It remains a well-rounded, practical MPV for those who want a family car that is feature rich.

Hi, I am stuck between two cars with specific models: Tata Safari Adventure+ (Petrol, Automatic TC) at โ‚น22.62 lakh and Kia Carens Clavis 2025 model HTX(O), DVT petrol at โ‚น22.06 lakh (I am getting โ‚น2.5 lakh discount for the 2025 model in Gravity Grey). I plan to keep the car for the next 15 years. I live in a nearby town of Bangalore and donโ€™t drive inside the city much. It's mostly towns and highways, with occasional city visits to malls. Average driving is less than 1000 km monthly. The 7-seater requirement is just a few times a year (when I club my sister's family).

Between the two, the Kia Carens Clavis HTX(O) petrol automatic is the better choice. It will feel easier to drive on highways and around town, and since you only need the third row a few times a year, its seating layout will work perfectly well without carrying the size and weight of a larger SUV every day.
The Tata Safari does offer stronger road presence and a higher seating position, but it is a bigger and heavier vehicle to live with on a daily basis. Given your limited running and the strong Rs 2.5 lakh discount you are getting on the Carens Clavis, it also represents better overall value.

I am looking for a 7-seater manual car which is easy to maintain. My budget is around โ‚น15 lakh. My annual running is 80% on the highway and 20% in the city. I am confused between two options: Carens or Clavis. Please advise which one I should pick and whether to go for a petrol manual or a diesel manual.

With your budget of Rs 15 lakh, you can move past the Kia Carens and up to the Carens Clavis, which is essentially a facelift of the Carens, with more features and an additional engine option. The trickier choice is which engine to choose, between the 1.5-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel, both of which are available with a manual.
The diesel is the more obvious choice, given that your usage is 80% on the highway, where the additional torque will be beneficial, not to mention the better mileage. However, in your budget, you'll only get it in the base HTE spec. If that's fine with you, then you should go ahead with that; otherwise, note that the Carens 1.5 petrol MT is available in the higher HTE (EX) trim, with more features.
You could also consider the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, which comes in petrol and CNG guises, has lower maintenance costs, and is far more affordable than the Kia.

Hi, I currently own a Honda Amaze diesel 2014 model. Now, after using it for so long, I want to upgrade to a 7-seater. I shortlisted the Hyundai Alcazar and Kia Carens Clavis and have done test drives for both vehicles. My daily usage in the city is 25 km, and I occasionally do long family trips. Now I am super confused between both cars, as one has premiumness and the other has space. Please suggest the best vehicle for me. Is the turbo petrol good? Now I am super confused.

Both cars are quite closely matched on premium feel, though one aesthetic seems to have worked better for you than the other. It's more a contest of road presence versus space, as the tall, SUV body style of the Hyundai Alcazar makes a strong impression on the road. It is boxy and upright and has the edge on ground clearance, as well as larger wheels.
The price you pay is in the third row, where the Kia Carens Clavis' practical MPV shape liberates more space, and there's better ease of access too. Both cars have the same powertrain options, except that the Carens Clavis offers an additional engine option - the 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol. It also gets an iMT automated manual gearbox with the Turbo Petrol engine instead of a conventional manual, which the Alcazar gets.
Yes, the Turbo Petrol is a good option, as given your relatively low usage, a diesel doesn't feel necessary. The 160hp, 1.5-litre turbo feels strong enough to haul 7 people and is quite enjoyable to drive too.
As for which of the two you wish to buy, if you simply must have an SUV for its visual appeal and ground clearance, that is the only reason to choose the Alcazar. If that is not a bother, then the lighter, more spacious, more practical Kia Carens Clavis is the one we recommend.

I am looking to upgrade from a 2018 Ertiga VXI CNG to a petrol AT 7-seater for daily Mumbai city use majorly. I have shortlisted the MG Hector Plus Savvy Pro AT, Tata Safari Adventure X Petrol AT, XUV 7XO AX7 Petrol AT and Innova HyCross GXO (non-hybrid). Which one is the best option for long-term use, comfort for a large family of five, reliability and decent mileage?

Since mileage is a concern, the Toyota Innova HyCross will be ruled out here. The Hycross hybrid is a lot better, but the non-hybrid version is good for 7kpl at best, which isn't the best figure. The MG Hector Plus, Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV 7XO are good and tech-laden, but the third row space is best for kids and short drives for adults.
A good option to consider would be the Kia Carens Clavis. The Clavis is an MPV that is high on practicality and comfort, and gets multiple powertrain options and lots of features. The third row is spacious and close to the Ertiga in terms of roominess, thereby even adults can travel in comfort. The ride quality is good, and the turbo-petrol engine has enough punch even with a full load. The Clavis is also high on features, and it will be the best choice among all the rest.

I am planning to upgrade from a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga to a new three-row SUV mainly for city driving. The Tata Safari Adventure X petrol AT does not have a dedicated third-row AC unit. Will this affect cooling for third-row passengers in Mumbaiโ€™s heat during daily use? I am also considering the MG Hector Plus Savvy Pro AT and the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7 petrol AT. Which would be the better choice among these?

Out of the three mentioned above, the Mahindra XUV 7XO would be the better choice. It is a lot more refined, plush and sorted overall and feels worth the money you pay. The engine is powerful, silent, and the gearbox works well in the city as well. The tech is new-age, and it feels futureproof.

However, the third row, despite getting AC vents, isn't the best in terms of space and comfort. The middle row cannot slide ahead, and that restricts room in the last row. Coming from an Ertiga, you will feel the space crunch in the 7XO and even the Hector Plus or the Tata Safari

If the third row is frequently used, the Kia Carens Clavis is the right choice as it has proper space in the third row and is quite practical. It isn't as fast or powerful as the others, but it has enough punch and is almost equally packed with features.

Being lighter than the bigger SUVs, it is also easy to drive around the city, and it has a smooth DCT gearbox. If third row space is not critical, then we would recommend the XUV 7XO, but if you want space in the last row, the Clavis would be ideal.

Hi Autocar Team, I am looking to buy a 7-seater car with a budget of โ‚น15-20 lakh on-road. My monthly driving is around 1,500 km. We are a family of 4 adults and 2 children, and it is becoming a bit uncomfortable for six people in my current Honda Elevate VX MT. Could you suggest a suitable model and variant within my budget? Also, does it make sense to choose an automatic transmission for my usage?

The Kia Carens Clavis is the best 7 seater within your budget. It's well packaged interior provides ample space for seven passengers and access to the third row is convenient. Also, the sliding middle row lets you balance space for last row occupants.

The Carens Clavis also boasts a well finished interior and a long list of standard safety features.

The automatic options on offer include a 160hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol with a dual-clutch auto gearbox and a 115hp, 1.5-litre turbo-diesel with a torque converter auto. The turbo-petrol offers stronger performance which you will appreciate on highway drives and with a full load of passengers. The turbo-diesel delivers reasonable performance but is the more fuel efficient choice.

You could look at the diesel-AT in HTK Plus trim and the turbo-petrol DCT in HTK Plus (O) trim.

Looking for a seven-seater car that would be of good quality and safety, with good comfort for both the driver and passengers, along with good mileage and power. Budget under โ‚น15 lakh. Daily travel of 50 km and a weekly 250 km trip to my native place.

You can consider the Kia Carens Clavis. It is a good-quality car with a very nice and premium interior, and the dashboard and all the switchgear feel well-built. It is also very comfortable and spacious, and even the third row is spacious enough and has dedicated AC vents as well as Type-C USB charging ports.
In terms of safety, the Clavis comes well-equipped with six airbags, ABS and ESP as standard. Within your budget, you would get a mid-spec petrol or, if you are very concerned about running cost then opt for the base diesel.

Hi Autocar Team, I have three children and parents in my family, and I have decided to purchase the Kia Carens Clavis. My daily commute is about 35 km in the city, and I usually take a 300 km highway trip once a month. I have been driving a diesel car since 2011, but I am now unsure whether to choose the petrol naturally aspirated (NA) variant or the diesel variant of the Carens Clavis. Considering my usage pattern and family requirements, which engine option would you suggest?

Since you don't drive much, paying a premium for a Kia Carens Clavis diesel version doesn't make much sense. Yes, diesel is more efficient, but to offset the initial premium, you will have to drive considerably more.

Hence, we recommend the naturally aspirated petrol engine. The 115hp engine has enough power for city driving and holds its own on the highway. The manual gearbox is smooth, the clutch is light, and overall, it is an easy car to drive.
The HTE (O) gets you a decently appointed cabin with a touchscreen infotainment system, sunroof, rear AC vents, and more.
The third row is spacious for adults, and the middle-row seat height is ideal for the elderly to get in and out.

Asked by: Marisetty Venkata VIdyadharon Mar 4, 2026

I own a Ford EcoSport and have had it for the past 10 years. Now I want to upgrade. I would like to go for a 7-seater petrol automatic. I want the best value-for-money 7-seater that can be used for the next 10 to 15 years with a reliable engine. I am not sure whether to choose a DSG, torque converter or CVT automatic transmission, but I want a trouble-free and smooth automatic transmission that works well even in bumper-to-bumper traffic. My usage would be 70% city and 30% highways. Safety is also equally important. Third-row occupancy should also be easy and spacious. Please suggest a car.

Since you have not mentioned your budget, it is difficult to recommend one specific car. However, based on your requirements, here are two strong options in different price brackets that would feel like a clear upgrade from your Ford EcoSport.
In the more affordable premium space, the Kia Carens Clavis suits your requirements well. It offers a spacious cabin and is comfortable across all three rows, which makes it a genuinely usable seven-seater. The interiors feel premium, it comes well-equipped with features, and the ride quality is comfortable for both city and highway use. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired with the 7-speed DCT offers strong performance and has enough power even with a full load. In bumper-to-bumper traffic, it can occasionally feel slightly jerky, which is typical of DCT gearboxes, but in everyday use, it is not really a deal breaker.
If your budget allows and you want the most comfortable, the Toyota Innova HyCross Hybrid is an excellent option. It is a full-size MPV with generous space in all three rows. The hybrid powertrain uses an e-CVT, which feels extremely smooth in city traffic and being a strong hybrid, it also delivers strong efficiency for a vehicle of this size. The ride quality is comfortable, and it performs well on highways, too. The only areas where it could be better are sound insulation, as some road noise enters the cabin, and the interior quality, which feels a bit average for its price.

I have been using Maruti cars for more than 30 years and have been using the Ertiga Hybrid for the last 6.5 years. I now need to change from the Ertiga to a good 7-seater car, preferably not the Kia Carens, etc., and around the same budget as the Ertiga. The average should also be similar. Let me know your feedback. Thanks.

Since you've been a Maruti loyalist and don't want to consider the excellent Kia Carens Clavis at all, the only options you have are to either get another Maruti Suzuki Ertiga or opt for the Maruti XL6, which is essentially a 6-seater Ertiga with black interiors, some added features and a body cladding to visually give it a rugged look. Unfortunately, there are no other car-like, spacious 7-seaters in the market that price point.
