I am a new buyer and looking for a 7-seater car with good space in the third row, with a 2.0-litre engine specification. My budget is Rs 20 lakh. Please suggest a better option.

The best choice considering your requirements would be the Mahindra XUV 7XO. However, at the Rs 20 lakh mark, you can only get the lower AX 3 spec of the 7XO that misses out on some features.
The Kia Carens Clavis, instead, is a better choice. The third-row space is better than the Mahindra and even though it does not get a 2.0-litre engine, the 1.5 turbo-petrol has good performance to handle a full load.
The Clavis will also be available in a higher HTK Plus (O) trim that has more features. Mated to the engine is the option of a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT, and we would recommend the latter for its ease of use and swift shift speeds.

Looking to buy a 7-seater car mainly for city use. Daily running is not much. Comfort is the priority. The maximum budget is ₹25 lakhs.

You should consider the Kia Carens Clavis. The Carens Clavis has a spacious and comfortable cabin for 7 adults, and it comes loaded with features. It also has light controls, which make it easy to drive in town. Engine options include a 115hp, 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol, a 160hp, 1.5 turbo petrol and a 116hp, 1.5 diesel.
Since your running isn't much, opt for one of the petrols. However, if you want a petrol-auto, you will have to go for the turbo petrol, which comes paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Kia Carens Clavis prices range from Rs 11.08 lakh to Rs 20.71 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

I have a budget of ₹15 lakh, but I cannot decide which car to buy. My requirements are a spacious cabin, good mileage, low maintenance, good after-sales service, and premium features without being overly high-tech. My elderly parents should be able to get in and out comfortably. I prefer a 7-seater, but if the budget is limited, I can opt for a 5-seater. Please suggest options.

Given your requirements, you should consider the Kia Carens Clavis. The Carens Clavis has a spacious cabin, and even the third row can comfortably accommodate adults. It is also not a particularly high-riding car, so your parents shouldn't have any trouble getting in and out. Furthermore, the MPV is also proven to be reliable, and Kia also offers good after-sales service.
Kia offers the Carens Clavis with a 115hp, naturally aspirated petrol, a 160hp, turbo petrol and a 116hp, diesel engine options. The latter two can also be had with an automatic gearbox. Choose the right one for you depending on your usage. Kia Carens Clavis prices range from Rs 11.08 lakh to Rs 20.71 lakh (ex-showroom).

I have a family of six adults. Which car would be suitable for me?

If you need a comfortable 6-seater, the Toyota Innova HyCross is the car for you. It offers three spacious rows and, it still leaves you with usable luggage space. If your budget permits, the strong hybrid version is the one to pick as it delivers better fuel efficiency and smoother performance.
A more affordable alternative is the Kia Carens Clavis. All three rows can accommodate adults, and you still get some room for bags. Clavis also gets a wide choice of engines: naturally aspirated petrol, turbo-petrol, and diesel. If your usage is largely within the city, the NA petrol is sufficient. For stronger performance and more relaxed highway overtakes, the turbo-petrol is the better choice.

I am planning to buy a 7-seater, preferably with an MPV stance and good space. I have tried the Carens Clavis HTX and the XUV 7XO AX7 manual transmission. Which one should I choose?

If you are leaning towards an MPV, then the Kia Carens Clavis is more appropriate. It has more of an MPV stance and, crucially, a more comfortable third row than the Mahindra XUV 7XO.
The Mahindra XUV 7XO is nicer to drive and much better equipped, but it's bigger and not as practical as the Clavis, which has better luggage space as well.

I currently own a 2010 Hyundai i20 petrol and want to upgrade to a new automatic car with a budget of ₹15 lakh (on-road). My usage is 50% city + 50% highway, with monthly running of ~1200–1500 km. It’s mainly for a family of 3, but sometimes 5-6 people during outings. I’m confused between petrol, diesel, and CNG. With diesel, I am worried about maintenance and city usage. CNG has good running costs, but there are long queues on weekends. My priorities are fuel efficiency, low maintenance, good safety, and long-term reliability. Based on this usage, which fuel type and automatic transmission would you recommend, and what safety aspects (airbags, build quality, ratings) should I not compromise on?

Since your running is high, it would be a choice between CNG and diesel. The Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO are both available with a diesel engine, but with a less-impressive AMT gearbox.
The Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet also get a diesel engine mated to a proper torque converter automatic, but in the Rs 15 lakh budget, you can only get the lower-spec version of the two that misses out on features. Between these four, we would recommend the Venue since it is a newer SUV with a comfy ride and a smoother automatic gearbox.
However, if you want a car for six passengers, you need to look at manual options. The Kia Carens Clavis is available with a diesel manual option that is spacious for six/seven, and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga with a CNG and a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Hi Autocar India, after test drives of vehicles ranging from the Amaze CVT to the 7XO base variant, I seem to have two options to choose from: Mahindra 3XO AX5 AT and Kia Carens Clavis NA HTE(O) MT. My usage is 90% Tier 2 city and 10% highways. I have two 3-year-old kids, along with my spouse and parents. The Carens Clavis seems to satisfy the family requirements, while I prefer the torquey engine and AT of the 3XO. Should I go ahead and buy the 3XO for the time being and move to a 7-seater a few years down the line, considering crash safety?

We would strongly suggest opting for a 7-seater. Having a safe car but carrying six persons in a 5-seater is equally, or even more, unsafe. We recommend the Kia Carens Clavis, as it meets your space requirements. In the Clavis, you have enough room to mount two child seats (highly recommended for child safety) along with four adults, ensuring good comfort. The ride quality is also comfortable, and it is a large, practical car.
Yes, the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine doesn’t have the punch of the 3XO’s turbo petrol engine, and if that is something you are after, then we would recommend stretching and going for the base variant of the Mahindra XUV 7XO. It is a 7-seater, although the third row is not as comfortable as the Clavis, but it is good enough for children, and the turbo petrol engine is powerful and has effortless performance.

Should I buy the Innova Hycross non-hybrid or the Hycross hybrid? My usage is mainly on highways and less in the city. I am open to other options as well in 7/8-seater petrol vehicles. Good mileage, engine, and build quality are preferable, as I am planning to keep the car for more than 10 years.

The Toyota Innova HyCross Hybrid is a better pick over the non-hybrid version. The hybrid powertrain is more efficient and will be more suitable for your highway usage. The engine is smooth and refined, and the electric motor provides a good amount of additional torque (even at high speeds). It makes this car easy to drive in the city as well as on the highway.

The Innova HyCross Hybrid is also very fuel-efficient, and you can expect a real-world mileage of around 20kpl+ on the highway. The build quality is also very good, and the cabin is spacious and comfortable. If you are open to other options, you can also consider the Kia Carens Clavis. It's a little smaller but still very spacious and comfortable, and is available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines. It also has excellent build quality and is loaded with features; plus, far more affordable than the Innova Hycross.

I want to buy a 7-seater, and my choices are the Kia Carens Clavis and the Citroen Aircross X. Petrol is the only option I can choose due to NCR restrictions. The Citroen has a torque converter automatic and good ride quality, but I am concerned about its service network and long-term trust. The Citroen also offers better mileage than the Carens. My budget is around ₹17 lakh. Please suggest which one to choose. Usage will be mostly city driving, with hill trips once every quarter. Thanks.

The Kia Carens Clavis has a plusher cabin and a stronger 160hp 1.5 turbo petrol engine, which gives it better acceleration for quick overtakes in the hills and on the highway. The overall cabin is also more spacious than that of the Citroën Aircross X.
Where the Citroen scores in sheer comfort, thanks to its brilliant suspension and very well-cushioned seats. The Aircross’ 110hp 1.2 turbo petrol engine is also quite capable, and for city driving, its 6-speed torque converter is smoother than the Carens’ DCT.
Overall, the Citroen Aircross X is the better bet. It makes a great everyday car, has superb suspension for bad roads, offers adequate power for hill driving, and is significantly cheaper than the Carens, which starts at around ₹19 lakh for the DCT variants and is over your budget.

Hi, my budget is ₹14-16 lakh and I am looking for a 6- or 7-seater car with good specifications and ride comfort. Please suggest a suitable 6/7-seater car.

The Kia Carens Clavis is the best 6/7 seat car in your budget. It's got a very practical cabin with enough room for passengers in all three rows. The one-touch middle row seat fold allows convenient access to the third row. While the sliding function for the middle row makes it easy to balance space for the last row occupants.

The Carens Clavis is available with petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel engine options. While all engines are pleasant, the turbo-petrol manual in HTK spec is the one we'd recommend for you. Its 160hp engine gives enough performance even with a full load of passengers, while ride comfort is also good, some firmness at low speeds notwithstanding.
