I am currently using a 2024 VW Virtus 1.5 GT (electric seats variant) and have completed 16,000 km. My current monthly running is around 1,000 km, mostly in the city. Should I continue with this car or switch to an EV? My Virtus has an online resale value of around Rs. 14 lakh, and I do not want to spend more than Rs. 3-4 lakh over its resale value. Please suggest whether I should buy an EV within this budget or continue with the Virtus.

If you enjoy driving, we'd recommend you stick with your Volkswagen Virtus 1.5 GT. At 16,000km and a 1,000km/month usage pattern, mostly in the city, the car is still relatively new and well within its prime ownership window. The 1.5 TSI is a strong, efficient engine and the Virtus is a genuinely enjoyable car to drive, especially in urban conditions where its size and performance are well suited. Your budget of Rs 14 lakh resale plus Rs 3-4 lakh extra puts you in the Rs 17-18 lakh range, which limits your electric car options to models like the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, MG Windsor and Kia Syros EV. While these are competent cars, they will not feel like a meaningful upgrade over the Virtus in terms of overall ownership experience. The financial case for switching to an EV at this stage is also weak given the depreciation hit you would take on a nearly new car. Unless you have a strong desire to go electric, it makes more sense to continue with the Virtus for a few more years and revisit the EV decision when your usage pattern or the EV market justifies it.

First-time car buyer on a tight budget of 5 lacs. Confused between the Alto K10 VXI variant and the Celerio LXI variant. I run 1000- 1500 kms monthly on Rural roads & highways. Which car will be more suitable for me?

The Maruti Celerio LXI would be the better choice for your usage. Since both the Alto K10 and Celerio use the same 1.0-litre petrol engine, there is very little to separate them in terms of outright performance. Both are adequately powered for city use and can handle occasional highway runs without feeling strained.Where the Celerio pulls ahead is in its overall package. It is a larger car with a more spacious cabin, a bigger boot and a more comfortable ride. It also feels more settled on highways and copes better with rough rural roads, which is particularly relevant given your monthly running and usage pattern. The Alto K10 VXI counters with a lower price and a better feature list than the Celerio LXI. It is also easier to manoeuvre in tight spaces. However, it feels more like an entry-level hatchback, whereas the Celerio feels a class above in terms of space and comfort.

I currently own a used Maruti Zen Estilo, which is running fine. However, I am looking to upgrade to another used car with better rear-seat space. I am considering the Maruti Wagon R due to its better legroom and higher seating position. My budget is around ₹3 lakh. Could you please suggest if this is a good choice or recommend any better alternatives within my budget?

You're likely to find an 8 or 9-year-old Maruti Wagon R for Rs 3 lakh. It keeps the tall, easy-to-step-into feel similar to the Estilo, and its backseat is roomier and headroom is more generous in comparison. Its light controls make it very easy to drive, and running costs are likely to stay low because parts and service are cheap and easy to find anywhere. If you are open to options, you could also look at a 10-year old Maruti Ritz. It has the same high seating, a slightly wider cabin, a more powerful 1.2-litre petrol engine, and it feels more stable on the highway, while still being easy to own.

I’m looking to buy my first car. Usage is 90% city and 10% highway. Budget under ₹5 lakh.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 VXi (O) MT as it fits your requirements. At roughly 3.5 m long with a tight turning radius, it will be ideal for driving in congested city traffic and will fit into small parking spots. As a first-time buyer, you’ll appreciate the light steering and clutch in stop‑and-go traffic and being a Maruti car, you'll also appreciate the stress-free ownership experience it comes with. The one thing you give up is high‑speed composure. Above about 90kph, it feels light and gets noisy, so highway stints are best kept calm and brief. If you prioritise stronger crash safety or expect more highway runs later, consider a well‑kept pre‑owned 2021-22 Tata Tiago XZ instead. It scored 4‑star adult protection in NCAP tests.
