My dad currently drives a 2009 Hyundai i10 that is still in good condition with only 38,000 km on it, but due to its age and limited usage, it now needs frequent maintenance. I want to upgrade to an automatic hatchback for him. His usage will be around 200 km a month, mostly highway driving with occasional city trips. Please suggest an easy-to-drive, low-maintenance automatic car within a โ‚น7 lakh budget. Should I choose a new car or a pre-owned one?

In your budget, you can consider the Maruti Suzuki Celerio VXi or ZXi AMT based on the features you want. It is easy to drive with good seat height for easy ingress and egress, and being a Maruti Suzuki car, it should be reliable and easy to maintain, even with low running. Ride quality is good and should keep him comfortable on highway commutes.

A more premium choice is the Maruti Suzuki Ignis. The Delta AMT should just about fit your budget, and its smoother and more powerful 1.2 litre four cylinder engine makes it nicer to drive than the Celerio.

If you are open to a used car, you can explore Spinny.com, where you may find more premium options like the Swift or the Glanza within your budget.

Iโ€™m a first-time car buyer with no driving experience. I need an automatic petrol car with a 4-cylinder engine, good mileage, low maintenance costs, and a reliable engine. My budget is under โ‚น8 lakh. I drive about 30 km daily, split roughly 50% highway and 50% city. Please advise.

Within your budget, you have two Maruti Suzuki options, the Wagon R 1.2 ZXi AMT and the Ignis Delta AT

The Wagon R is the more practical choice with a roomier cabin and a larger boot, while the Ignis feels more premium inside and looks more stylish. Both use 1.2-litre four-cylinder engines, but they are not identical.

On paper, the Ignis makes 8 hp less than the Wagon R, yet in real use, there is little difference, and the Ignis' 1.2 litre K12 engine actually feels a bit more responsive at low speeds than the K12N in the Wagon R.

Hi, Iโ€™m planning to buy my first car, and I prefer an automatic transmission. Iโ€™ll be using it daily for office commutes in bumperโ€‘toโ€‘bumper traffic, and since Iโ€™m tall and well built, I need something with comfortable, manageable legroom. Could you suggest some suitable cars within a โ‚น9-10 lakh on-road price in Chennai based on these requirements?

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a good option to consider. It has been a long while since this Maruti Suzuki car received a significant update, but it still offers typical features you would expect, and the compact dimensions make it easy for a first-time buyer. Being a tall car, it offers good headroom.
If, however, you would like something newer, you could consider the Maruti Suzuki Swift as well.

I have followed your writing for two decades and now request your advice: Among hatchbacks and crossovers with 1.2 NA engines โ€” from MS (Ignis, Swift, Baleno, Fronx), Hyundai (Grand i10 Nios, i20, Exter), Tata (Tiago, Altroz, Punch), and Citroen (C3 1.2 NA) โ€” which is the most fun to drive? I personally feel that the older Swift with its 1.2 K12 engine was best, but with the current Z-series 3-pot engine things are less exciting. Considering performance, is Ignis perhaps the best of the lot now, thanks to its light weight and decent road manners?

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis and Baleno share the 1.2-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine, which is known for its smoothness, refinement, free-revving nature and fuel efficiency. The Ignis is relatively smaller in size than the Baleno, and with its light controls, will be a touch easier to drive and park in tight spaces.

That said, the new Maruti Suzuki Swift is still an excellent, fun-to-drive option, with a nicer steering (it returns to centre more naturally than the Ignis' unit), and its darty nature. Its 3-cylinder petrol engine is also very good in terms of drivability; yes, it doesn't revv as freely as the 4-cylinder 1.2 unit, but if you don't regularly spin the engine beyond 4000rpm, it'll keep you satisfied.

Do drive the new Swift once, it might just be the one for you.

For women of good height, with a budget of โ‚น3-6 lakh, which car is most suitable for road trips?

Given your requirement for a car for road trips, we recommend looking at the more powerful options within your budget, rather than the more feature-packed ones.

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a good fit for your needs. It has a nice 1.2-litre engine, and Maruti's easy-to-access service network also counts for a lot when venturing out of city limits.

Citroen C3 is the best-to-drive car within your budget, but the service network is small.

Tata Tiago and Tata Punch are also options to consider. They feel tough, and this adds greatly to confidence on a road trip.

Is the automatic Ignis a good buy under โ‚น10 lakh for city driving, good mileage, and low maintenance?

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis AMT has a nice engine, delivers good fuel economy, and is affordable to maintain. While it is a decent choice of an automatic car for city driving, there are other options for under Rs 10 lakhs.
We'd recommend you look at the Maruti Suzuki Fronx AMT too. It is more spacious than the Ignis, and delivers a more comfortable ride too, while also offering good fuel economy and low maintenance costs.

Weโ€™re planning to buy a car mainly for my fatherโ€™s use. He currently drives an AMT Celerio since 2015 and is now 69 years old. Weโ€™re looking for a sensible upgrade. He is a sedate driver, so mileage and ease of use are our main requirements.

Given your fathers age and requirement, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a good upgrade from the Celerio AMT. The Ignis will maintain the familiarity of Maruti and has strong efficiency as well, while the high seating makes it easy for ingress and egress. The seats are comfortable, the engine is smooth, and the compact dimensions make it easy in the city too.

I have been your regular follower for more than two decades. Iโ€™m confused between the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Asta AMT and the Maruti Suzuki Ignis Alpha AGS. This car will primarily be driven by my wife. Please share your views.

Thank you for being our long-time reader and viewer; we really appreciate it!

While both cars are a little old now, theyโ€™re still very competent at what they do, and each has its own small advantages. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios offers a better back seat and boot, in case that is your priority.

However, if it is not, we would recommend the Maruti Suzuki Ignis for a few reasons. Itโ€™s more fuel-efficient, with an ARAI-rated Maruti Ignis mileage of 20.89 kmpl. its slightly taller stance makes ingress and egress easier with great forward visibility. Plus, itโ€™s a bit more compact, which really helps with maneuverability in the city.

My budget is โ‚น7 lakh. Iโ€™m planning to buy the Maruti Suzuki Ignis. I currently drive an Alto 800. What do you suggest?

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a good upgrade from the Alto 800. However, if you want a bit more space, the Maruti Suzuki Swift would be a better choice, though itโ€™s slightly more expensive.
