The Kodiaq SUV strives to offer everything people like about Skodas in a shape people want. There’s also the lure and added flexibility of a third row of seats. The design updates are subtle but effective, and the added equipment is welcome. The interior remains plush and comfortable, and rows one and two are pretty spacious. The last row, however, disappoints. It’s not only tight on space, but the seating position is awkward and access isn’t easy. The new 190hp, 2.0-litre petrol engine improves refinement. Power delivery is plentiful but linear, and lacks the characteristic punch of Skoda’s old TDI diesel engine. Owners can now select damper stiffness to suit driving conditions, and what remains nice is how easy the big Kodiaq is to drive, which is a boon in town. Some may find it pricey, but with the Tiguan Allspace gone, and other 7-seaters being big, ladder-frame behemoths that are cumbersome to drive, the Kodiaq is in a class of one for the moment.
